I've heard many misconceptions about compressors versus normalization. So, in many ways, this week's Friday show is an effort to clear up the confusion about a compressor and compression being different from normalization. In essence, a compressor decreases the dynamic range of an audio's amplitude while a normalization process just bings all the levels up or down while leaving the dynamic range in tact - completely unchanged. Hope that helps!!
Dude! Finally, someone who speaks clearly, in basic English.
Thank you.
Someone give this man a medal. Best explanation I've seen so far.
Best explanation of compression vs normalization I have come across. Simple and straightforward
Thank you - I love hearing that!
2021 and I am here learning. Thanks!!!
Severely underrated video
Excellent explanation of the difference; thank you! Subscribed.
Finally I got clear Idea Oliver ...short and sweet....thank you so much....
Thanks, made something that seemed complex. Easy to follow and understand.
Really great explanation and exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for making this.

You literally answered all my questions with examples! Loved it, great job👏
Awesome! Thank you!
i didn't know what either of these were but now I do. made perfect sense
Clear and great, thanks!
Great clear explanation. More UA-camrs need to discover compression.
I am definitely one of the people who read the wrong info and thought normalization was doing what compression actually does. Changing my workflow asap. You explain things so well!!
Appreciate that!
Absolutely helpful! Thanks man...
that is the about the most patient rant and subtle beating of a dead horse ever! excellent video
Thank you for the help!
Superuseful and simple explanation thanks man!
Thanks for sharing! Appreciate that!
Thanks for this!!
Thanks so Much Bro that was excellently explaioned
Thank you so much for this explanation, finally I understood :)
Thank you maaaaaan
You're the best 💓
Excellent description! Of compression vs normalization.
Thanks alot, still usefull in 2022!
Awesome. Thanks!
Thank you, Oliver! This video was informative and entertaining. 🧠✨
Thank you thank you thank you!
I needed to understand the difference between normalization, compression and limiter. A quick google query and I found your video! OK, it was published more than 1 year ago... it is perfect for me. Thanks 👍
I'm so happy to hear that!
Very very valuable and detailed information thanks.. brother.
Of course. Thanks for watching!
thank you for making it so clear. you now have a new subscriber :)
Thanks for the info dude!
Of course! Thanks for saying something!
audio aint easy, but Oliver your a bloody legend. Totally picking up what ya putting down!
You made my day Lewy
This was helpful, thanks!
I’m so glad about that!
awesome thanks! subbed
Compression was very confusing for me for a while. This video is great and makes compression make sense. Especially in comparison with normalization. I know there is more to learn about compression, but thanks for making the concept click better in my brain 🙌
I'm happy to hear that!
I use both on dialogue... Works for me always.
Very helpful 👍
Damn your voice at the start only I knew I am learning from a professional lmao , great video keep putting the good work man
Very helpful
Wheres the Love button!!! GREAT Explanation!!! Thank you so much.
Niceee thankyo !
a comment with nothing in it because i want the algorithm to see your channel as relevant and to boost you up because i love that content
Ha! This is amazing.
thanks legend
Thank you. Didn't know what audio compression was. For me both things were somehow done by normalization.
Now I can continue my search for a "real time" audio compressor software for linux and windows, assuming it can be made.
❤️❤️❤️
Hello oliver , Great video . Now I could understand the difference . Please make video on Equalization , Bass Boost , Treble boost on Audacity .Thanks
ty al ot bro
great explanation. subd
nice video brother..
The several repetitions really helped drum it in lool. But really makes cristal clear now what they mean and I just applied the theory and its exactly what I was after.
Your awesome guy. I don't feel like your trying to feed me shit like most the people on these subjects on youtube. Great Job!
Thanks man, that means a lot
@@OliverJHughes no problem bro. Thanks for responding i hardly ever get them so while im at it ill share one of my musc videos wjth you. Im Kasper by the way. Everyone hits rough patches in there life well for me i been solo now no more labels but im left recording songs and videos from my 50 android phone yes its a struggle lol but i been working hard at this musoc for about 8 years and im just not giving up that easy. Enjoy bro ua-cam.com/video/z9XGR5LOawA/v-deo.html
Thanks for a simple explanation, Oliver. I've just created a new gaming channel, and when I'm editing, like most youtubers I guess, I have some audio that I recorded from a script, and then some live audio from a game. Then back to script etc etc. Often, during an episode, I'll hear the volume dip, then jump up, then drop and so on, throughout the clip. I'm guessing from your explanation, I need highlight all the voice audio tracks, and then normalize the lot? Thanks again. Keep up the good work! Oh crap, I just realised I need to compress....lol. Maybe i shouldn't stay up so late editing.....
Yep, compression first ALWAYS, then normalize!
i like a little compression on my kickdrum at live gigs so its a little more even. you can play soft and it will be softer than when you play hard but its all a little more even, which is what you want for rock and hard rock...
i practice without it though so i get more even and i practice more volume control. but on stage i like the best experience for the audience
Very helpful, I personally have a way better understanding with your videos
thank god.. i have been researching on this topic for 12 hrs now
haha
do I reduce the noise and then compress, OR compress and then reduce noise? which is better?
I always reduce first - since compression will mess with amplitude of the noise you're trying to eliminate - just a safer bet!
@@OliverJHughes makes sense.. i was doing the opposite. thank you for the advice!! :)
You are the best
THANK YOU 🙏🏻
Subbed bro
This is the way.
Great video - perfectly explained! Out of interest, do you use your Zoom H6 as a mic or do you plug-in additional mics and just use it to record the audio?
For dialogue, I'm always plugging a mic into one of the XLR ports. But I sure love getting ambient sounds with the stereo XY capsule.
Thanks @@OliverJHughes! And what sort of XLR mics would you recommend? Usually I’m recording post-match interviews at sporting events/in stadia with a fair amount of background noise.
thanku so much for this video
Is it possible to remove nose breathing sounds that come while eating while recording "ASMR eating videos"?
2:52 it actually makes perfect sense now.
Hi, so when I do the postprocessing of my guitar recording better is to use compression or normalization first to get best effect ?
Given UA-cam's normalization to all audio in videos now, how would one correctly mix a music track to take advantage of this? UA-cam is squashing my audio hard.
Yes, definitely - I went over to your channel and looked and yes they are bringing it way down from whatever you originally had. I had this problem as well and decided to start limiting to -3 and it seems to slip by un-normalized. Now, thankfully it isn't manipulating your audio since normalization just turns it down, in a sense, but it may make your perceived loudness less than other videos and that is a problem. I'm looking into the specifics about UA-cam's normalization now, but maybe start by mastering to -3db for all your peaks.
@@OliverJHughes Thanks dude, I'll give that a shot.
I broadcast a show which is a mix of interviews (spoken word only) and music. I log into our station in 4 X 30mins segments.(producing at home due to pandemic) .Should I compress each segment first, then normalise it before creating the mp3 file for broadcast? Or just compress it? thanks for your great video!
That was cool Big O....lol
THX ha!
Which comes first? Normalization or compression?
Nice done, well explained. but :) I'm wondering should I compress my harmonica track (insert joke here:) A Gentleman is someone who could play the harmonica, but chooses not to. "It aint me It aint me:)
Thank you, very useful, but then whats the difference between normalization and amplification?
Well… amplification is more of a generic term referring to making something louder. It’s not necessarily used in reference to the audio signal chain.
Is there any difference between amplification and normalisation?
For a live acoustic performance/with singing would you want to use Compression or Normalization?
You could use both!! Compress first, get your dynamic range in check, and then normalize for final loudness
Cool now my question is what the difference between volume and normalization.
It's the same thing matey... as mentioned in the video.. to normalize audio is to change its overall volume by a fixed amount to reach a target level. It is different from compression that changes volume over time in varying amounts. It does not affect dynamics like compression, and ideally does not change the sound in any way other than purely changing its volume.
While exporting our final audio track from daw should we normalize it or not?
Up to you - normalization is handy if you are trying to hit a specific loudness - but if you like your mix where it is it's unnecessary.
So what normalizing does? LoooL many thanks Bro.
🙏🏻😂
*that's?
shoyuld we use compressor with normalizer
Do you normalized before compression?
pithy, curt and crisp elucidation..Being utterly antipathetic to youtubers wafling on meaninglessly and throwing non sequiturs every now and then, really pleased to see someone cutting to the chase from the word go..
Life is better this way 😂
This video should have been audio only (joking). Your eyes are so pretty they're distracting. I zoned out looking into them and then had to rewind because I couldn't process what you said. Seriously, your eyes look like sapphires.
What's with all these people philosophizing over audio processing and not giving a single bit of demonstration? It's nuts.
I am stupid. Now I am sure.
Yes, the horse has been beaten. Thank you!
why are there zero comments
Thanks for being the first!
Okay... But what really does normalization instead of a compressor?😆
Lol - uh - lemme try and explain again
"Cleanly / nicely" its legit getting annoying in pop reducing the uniqueness of music.
