This is my second year in business. The first year I worked full time at a factory, and that had mandatory overtime. I picked up 17 clients. This year I got a new truck, trailer, and mower and 2 months into the season I’m at 25 properties that I maintain. I recently left my job and I’m trying to push that to 50 properties by the end of the season. I’m out for 8 hours per day on days I’m not working JUST KNOCKING ON DOORS. I pass out cards to everybody I come across, maybe passed out 1,500 cards this season. It’s not easy, but it’s doable. I have a fiancé and we have 5 kids between us. I’m busting my ass every single day from BEFORE the sun comes up until AFTER the sun goes down. That’s what it takes to build something, I’ve seen it with anybody who has built anything in life. I’m not big yet, my setup is simple, and I have 1 part time guy incase I come across a big landscaping job and need the help. I’m doing this all fresh off of a broken ankle that required a plate and 8 screws. That is on top of Boulder surgery the year before I started and injuries I sustained from the military. There is zero excuse and I’m tired of excuses from everybody saying they want to start. I get out there and do it, I’m self taught on most things, but I did learn how to do a lot of work from working for 2 different companies. I worked for other companies just to learn certain skill sets to start my own company. Ryan is right, suck it up, get motivated, and go get it done. There is no reaction without first giving action.
Hard working guy right there. Sometimes you need to put your head down and simply make things happen. Great motivation.
Wow! I'm not even in the landscaping industry (I run a personal training studio), but this was still amazing to listen to. I just shared it on my Facebook page, and this is what I wrote about it there.
"I’ve listened to a lot of motivational talks in my lifetime, but this one (on UA-cam) is the best of all time in my opinion. The fact that he’s talking about how to kick butt and succeed in the landscaping industry is irrelevant, because the energy and wisdom he shares in this video is applicable to any industry, business, job, relationship, sports team, or other field of human endeavor."
I think the context I am missing from this video is why it was made in the first place. Without that I just feel like I got yelled at for 30 minutes for things I've never complained about😅

Yes. Ryan is in the group and shares his knowledge with many of the new owners; however, he is pushing them to work hard and figure things out in the video.

I have a small operation, it’s hard but that isn’t any excuse. Have had a hard time finding good help & increasing leads. In the end of the day, there’s more time I can spend going out there and knocking on doors; and introducing myself to new people. Just have to accept that!!

@@startingtech3900I just took a job as a yard operator for a large landscaping company and I’m learning and relearning everything as the rush picks up and I hate calling, lol foreman’s were complaining about babysitting a new guy and I was like well hell you must love me then and they said I’ve been the easiest. I feel like in the past few years as Augusta grew there’s ppl who thought this line of work is easy when it’s not so that’s why this was made. I had to explain to a few tradies that landscape and hardscape is a legitimate trade, it’s not unskilled labor like how cali said wildland fire isn’t a skilled labor job…. Don’t let the hard days win.

Staying hungry is one of the most important things in business. I've wanted to start a nursery to go with my lawn care business for a while now but I've been lazy. This is the kick in the ass I needed. I'm going to get on this!
I just took a job as a yard operator with everything that Ryan already has but we have our own mulch, clean stone, river rock and 2a modified we sell. I’ll tell you I’ve never operated a wheel loader but now I do. Learning all the equipment from mt100 mini track skids to how to pour concrete in the month I’ve been there. This mindset and repetition always supports growth and development. I’ve been stressed all month because I’m new, never experienced anything like this yard and yeah I’m anxious. This is the hardest part of the season so don’t let the hard days win.
The 1 gift I was given in life: growing up poor, every other month electric and gas getting shut off. Not having anything out of the necessities of life. And being damn greatful for every bit of what we did have. I still live to this day (mindset) the way I grew up. Yea me and my wife make good $. We even have a few dollars in the bank. But my mindset never changed.
great video. I started in 2018 and now running 2 truck out of new york. This brought back a lot of my initial hurdles and also made me proud of what ive been through.
Biggest learning from this for me was to keep consistent for what I want and be decisive. I jump to much and need to see things through before quitting to jump on something else. Love this and much deserved kick in my mental ass.

That was awesome! I do have a question that could possibly be another video...How do you mesh the "stick with simple services" mantra with a guy like Ryan who does it all? Now I'm doing mowing, fert&weeds, cleanups, mulch/stone, and plowing. Should I add walls and pavers? What about tree work? Why not decks?
He diversified to grow and then joined Augusta. Simplification of services doesn’t necessarily mean basic services like mowing and mulch… it means creating systems around the services you do offer to make them more repeatable. Also, some owners enjoy the challenge of learning new services, equipment, and projects and the franchise doesn’t limit them. Is that the most profitable way to grow? maybe not, but the businesses are built to serve the goals of the owner and not all goals start and end with just more money.

In interviews I used to ask potential hires if they had ever left work for the day with a sweaty belt. Meaning when they take their belt off when they get home, they could ring it out. Rarely anyone could say they had sweat that much on the job. Obviously I didn’t care if they had or had not I was simply making a point. Working for me. Doing what we do. Most days you will end your shift covered in dirt and sweat. If that’s something you can’t handle than this is not the work for you.

I can appreciate this video and truly believe you have to work harder than others to have the lifestyle they can't. I also believe that 8 hours of sleep a night is overrated but man, 3 hours is just plain unhealthy. I get it but you still need to take care of yourself, especially if you're working hard everyday.

I live paycheque to paycheque, I did gardening as a subcontractor then my health dipped I was ordered by Drs not to drive or use machinery which is why I didn't continue it then covid got worse to a full lockdown, when I was allowed to drive, the only job I could land was delivery work, I did that to get by with lockdowns, worked in a cafe after lockdown and lived paycheque to paycheque. My excuse was being lazy, I picked myself up and now I'm starting my own business, all I need is a vehicle that fits the requirements around me and all lights are green.
Now you can say "your next excuse is not having a proper vehicle you can use your car." Well Yes true but I want to take care of my body if I get injured by lifting a mower in and out of a car I cant work, if my windows get smashed in and a tool is stolen I loose time and work until I can replace it. I just want a vehicle that reduces injury and smash and grab thefts that happen here. So I am waiting for a blower, when that arrives, I will start doing hedge cutting, clearance jobs on my time off, have some income into the business. There is work I can do without a mower and I will be focusing on that.
My future business plan is to have an income that not only supports my life but able to hire people so I can grow, when I am older I can then work in the office at the nursery and just go out when I want to do quotes or cut a lawn or weed a bed. I want to show my parents that I will be ok before their time comes and this means I cant excuse myself for not taking action anymore.
My experience is higher than some people starting off but lower than my competitors that already established, who cares. If someone asks me "can you build me a fence" I will look at it and say yes, if someone asks for a shed, I will look into it and say yes. Men learn how to do jobs on the job. Before education systems had college and university for everything, people just learnt on the job.
Never going to undercut the ones that do this on the side that do not have all the overhead...insurance, business license, advertising, employees, taxes...especially the ones that work for cash under the table. Those types are every where. But, even if one completely ignores that type, there are still the retired that do this type of work of something to do or for just a little extra cash....they don't have to make a living off the income (even if they are doing everything the legal way)
This video made me reflect on what motivates me. Sits not any kind of reward. Maybe a chip on my shoulder?
In my opinion, if you have the drive, you have it…..if you don’t have the drive, you’re screwed

Look, you can see it as gloating or you look at his journey. People ALWAYS say it’s impossible or it cannot be done because of xyz or because my fingers hurt. This video was intended to be proof that it can be done. Did you see him giving a tour of his flash home or his brand new ferrari? No! It was a tour of a business that he worked hard for. By the way, nothing flashy. It’s a sheet metal building with plants and fence around it, but damnit, he earned it and it’s all a product of hard work! He tries to show you how far he’s come to inspire others, not to show off…
