I had to stop this video at one minute and one second just to tell you how excited I am that you're evidently going to be repairing the exact clock that I am looking up to repair... I have exactly that clock!!
Thanks! Cuckoo clocks are a lot of fun but at times can be challenging. If you ever run into trouble the nawcc forums will be your best friend. Good luck with your clock!
I bought a cuckoo clock, the bird style, at Goodwill, for practically nothing! I just adore it, and I am learning so much from these videos. Remarkably my clock works great for being packed not so great and being jostled around at the Goodwill.
Congrats on your clock! Cuckoos are my favorite. They are so much fun. Thanks for watching my channel and reaching out!
Thank goodness I just found you. I have my grandma's 1964 Black Forest Clock and I am the keeper of it for many years. I had it cleaned and fixed AGAIN- and I forgot how to get it going. I have done it several times over these many years. Thanks for such an easy explanation. I have many children here doing music and they love to see the little Germans dancing.
So glad to hear you got it going again! Happy to help 😊 Thank you!
Thank you! I inherited a cuckoo clock my Dad purchased in Germany in 1942 while stationed there in the service. I needed to learn how to get accurate time. This answered my question.
You're welcome! Thanks for sharing!
This was so helpful!
First time Cuckoo owner. Hubert Herr 8 day Black Forest cuckoo clock. I can see why you’re interested in these clocks. They are marvelous. This video was very informative and I appreciate it.
Thanks for your feedback! I'm glad I could help. Enjoy your 8-day!
Your advice makes sense and is perfectly shown. EPIC TIP about twist tying the chains together. Thanks so much!
The German weight driven cuckoo clocks really are the best thanks so much 4 sharing
My Grammy has a 1 day Mickey Mouse themed 1 day cuckoo clock in her house, It sounds really nice. My Grammy decided to pass it down to me. I dident know anything about move a clock from Wisconsin to Colorado, or anywhere. Thanks so much for the video. It really helped me.
I don’t know why I used “1 day” twice!
You're welcome. Thanks for reaching out! I just did a search on eBay for these and some are really neat clocks and bring a decent price too. I had no idea so many different ones were made by Disney.
Nicely done Seth. I've never seen the trick with the twist tie before.
Thank you Mark!
Thank you so much... I just ordered an 8 day one from ebay.. similar to one you showed, Cant wait to have that cuckoo every day.... we had one growing up and I loved it!.. P.s. I wish I saw this first as I would have purchased from you,,, but know if ever needed I will use you and recommend as well
Congrats on your new cuckoo clock. They are so much fun. I like the 8-days because they don't need their weights raised every day. I rarely sell clocks any more but I can definitely refer you to some good companies or websites. Thanks for the feedback and supporting my channel!
Thank you for the video. My cuckoo clock is up and running now. 😊
You're welcome. Enjoy your cuckoo clock René!
Thank you I just had my grandpa grandmas coo coo clock fixed they past years ago I got it back clock guy is on vacation I just installed it thank you for vid 💯
You're welcome. I'm so glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
I have found that as a collector who has had my collection from sea level to 8,ooo feet above, altitude can affect the clocks. In my experience, I usually had to speed them up at higher elevations, and slow them down at lower elevations. I know, that sounded weird to me too. Also, when moving long distances, I would recommend clamping the bellows gently down.
That's really interesting. I had no idea altitude affected clocks. Thanks for sharing that and for the tip about clamping the bellows down. I'll have to write that down. It's a very good idea!
@@ClockswithSeth At 8000 feet above sea level acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.79914 m/s^2, and at sea level it is 9.80665 m/s^2. That's only a difference of 0.077%. That seems really small, maybe through many very slightly slower swings a difference adds up?
For a simple pendulum the period is proportional to 1/sqrt(g)
So over a single day, all else being equal (so ignoring air pressure differences) then just due to gravity a pendulum clock would run 33.09 seconds slower over a day at 8000 ft compared to at sea level, after a month that would be a drift of 17 minutes slower.
@@xWHITExEAGLEx You taught me something new. That’s very interesting. There are some high end clocks that are extremely accurate, compensating for things such as air pressure changes etc. Erwin Sattler makes some very high quality clocks that might mitigate this. erwinsattler.com/en/kollektion/longcase-clocks/
I will try your notes!!!! Thanks for the video!!!
Thank you so much i couldn't figure out how to make it on time again
Thanks for watching!
@@ClockswithSeth im stupid but i dont know how many swings is a second, i am trying to time it
@@fuffi8550 Hey, don't worry about the timing it that way. Set the time. Let it run a few hours then see if the time is fast or slow. That'll will let you know if it's on time or needs the pendulum bob nut raised or lowered.
Thanks for the helpful video. I put mine it’s working but cuckoo did not come out 😢
Sorry to hear that it’s not coming out. There’s so many things that can go wrong with these. My friend Mark Munnerlyn has a library of UA-cam videos on out to fix just about every issue these clocks can have. If you search for his name it should come up. I go to his videos from time to time for help too. Have a great day!
Awesome instructions!
Excellent video!
Thank you!
Hello, I just found your videos. Wish I had seen it before I moved! I put my clock up and start the pendulum and it runs less than 5 minutes. Any suggestions on how to fix it. It is a one day clock from Germany. Thank you!
I have an almost identical clock to the one in the video and the pendulum stops swinging after a few minutes. even with the bob taken off. If i remove the pendulum arm it will keep swinging indefinitely. What's the cause of this
Great video!!! Thank you. Now I’m having trouble getting the little dancers to move. Any suggestions?
Those can be very tricky. I’d need to know what kind as there are differences. Could you email a picture of the back with the door removed so I could see the base of the dancer platform? Also a pic of the front would be helpful too. My email is clockswithseth@gmail.com.
@@ClockswithSeth Thank you! I will do that ASAP.
Very nice and informative video, but how to balance the clock? vertically and horizontally?
Thank you! Normally when I hang a cuckoo I do it by eye, taking a step back to make sure it's not tilted left or right. To be absolutely sure using a small level would eliminate any chance for error.
Terrific! Thank you
Hi there! Thanks for the lovely tutorial :)
Just out of curiosity, would there be a difference if I were to set the time first (by moving the minute hand etc) before pulling the weights and pushing the pendulum?
Your help is much appreciated.
Hi Sarah, thank you! There can be difference if the weights don't have enough length or room to drop for the cuckoo call as you set the time. Then you'll end up having to raise the weights before continuing, allowing it to finish the call. It wouldn't be good to advance it without it finishing the call. But, if you still have plenty of room for your weights to drop as you advance the hand it's perfectly fine.
@@ClockswithSeth I see, some very useful explanations there, thanks so much again!
How to make bird Coco. We did everything you said and it makes a slight noise at hour and half, but will not coco.
Hi Marie, does yours have a silent function engaged? It's usually a little lever on the side if it has it. If it's not that when you open up the back of the cuckoo are the lift wires connected to the bellow tops? You'll see 2 tall wood rectangular boxes on either side and on the top is the bellow, usually wrapped in paper or leather. If it's not connected to the movement or if there is a hole in the bellow fabric the cuckoo will not call.
Hi. I have the same clock as shown on the thumbnail and it doesnt seem to tick. I can tell that one of the weights is movong mut the other one appears to be stuck. It doesnt tick unless I push the pendulum and only for a couple second. Do you know what the problem could be and how it could be fixed? Thanks in advance
Hi, if the pendulum swings only a couple seconds first try tilting it on the wall to the left and then right. Does it run any better in a tilted position? If so there is an adjustment you can do the pendulum leader wire. Check out this video and start at about 3 minutes: ua-cam.com/video/CUwAmuw13TU/v-deo.html
Another thing could be that a chain has come off its ratchet wheel and is caught. Can you look with a flashlight and see if it's come off? It's a little tricky on the smaller cuckoo clocks. The following video shows how to put one back on with the movement removed from the case, start at about 9:45. ua-cam.com/video/mESykVJpHRw/v-deo.html
I hope this helps. Best of luck with your clock!
So glad you asked this question. I just got my Oma’s cuckoo clock bought in Germany 1950’s. It’s been to the clock repair man who fixed the bellows. He had it running perfectly. My pendulum is doing the same thing. I’ll watch these videos too. Thanks.
I am just not able to pull the chain up. Pl suggest how to do this.
Sounds like your chain has come off the rachet wheel. You’ll need to open the back and check. If it’s off it needs to be put back on and can be tricky. If you remove bellows, hands and disconnect the cuckoo bird there’s only 4 screws holding the movement in, pulling it out would make it easier to do.
I just found this cuckoo clock it is the basic one. Penderlum is on and one weight there are 3 chains so where does the other weight go? Two of the chains have small rings at the end the other chain has nothing. So where do I hook the other weight?
Hi Andrea, it sounds like one of your chains might be missing a hook. The rings at the end of the chain keep the chain from going up into the case when the weights are all the way down. For now you could use a twist tie to attach the weight to the end of the chain that is missing it’s hook. You can find these cuckoo chain hooks cheapest on eBay if you are only needing them. Hope this helps! Let me know and have a wonderful day!
Yes. I will get another small ring. But when I put the weight on it. The cuckoo bird won't stop! It is keeping good time. But only have one weight on. Why would the cuckoo keep on chirping?
@@andreacc7795 Sounds like your movement needs a little work. My friend Mark has an outstanding library of cuckoo clock videos. This video of his addresses what might be causing it. Please check him out and subscribe. He’s been a great help to me with troublesome clocks. ua-cam.com/video/n4vs9RIagFk/v-deo.html
I bought an old 7-day cuckoo clock from a guy who repairs clocks as a side business. It was working, but then the pendulum stopped so I brought it back to him to fix. He cleaned and oiled it and didn’t charge me. However, now only the second half of the cuckoo sound can be heard the first syllable doesn’t sound at all. Can you please advise me on how to fix this?
I suspect of the lift wires came loose. Open the back and there should be a wire going to each of the bellow tops. Reconnecting it should hopefully fix this. Thanks for watching!
Hi what do you do if the cuckoo activates at 10minutes early ie 2.50 instead of 3pm ?
On modern cuckoos you can adjust it by loosening the hand nut and advancing the minute hand.
Thankyou
Hey! My parents just bought an used cuckoo clock but it doesn’t work when i nudged the pendulum? Is there something I’m doing wrong?
It's possible the clock is out of beat. Try tilting it to the right a little and see if it runs better, and then try the left. There is a little crutch wire that will need to be bent slightly to help it run at a level position. Typically it just needs a very slight bend. Here's a video by one of my friends putting one in beat with the movement out of the clock. You can do it with the movement inside the clock. ua-cam.com/video/CUwAmuw13TU/v-deo.html
I hope this helps!
Hi! I have a cuckoo clock. I bought it on-line few days ago. It's not a new one. Probably it was made in the 80's. I had an identical one when I was a kid. I always liked and loved that clock, so I decided to buy one as I said. I managed to transport it safely home and make it work properly. The only problem I have is that I didn't succed to make it sing and gong as many times as is should do according to the indicated hour. I home I explained corectly my problem. It is a russian cuckoo clock, MAJAK (it has writen on the back "made in CCCP 😀). Could you be so kind to let me know how to solve my problem? Thank you very much!
Congrats on your clock! You can move the hour hand to match the count. It's a friction fit on a tapered shaft. Carefully move the hour hand forwards or backwards to the correct hour. If the hand comes loose you can press it back down on its shaft. I hope this helps!
@@ClockswithSeth Thank you so much for your kind answer. I will do as advised. I really hope it will work 😀. For the moment, my wife and I (and even my kids) are making fun of the little bird... "oh, he is so tired that he doesn't even feel like singing as many times as he should or ... he is on strike or... he doesn't know how to count" 😀. Anyway, thanks again! Best regards!
@@andystaicu4655 Lol, that's funny! Cuckoo clocks are so much fun. Best of luck with your clock!
What if the cuckoo is not aligned with the time? It cuckoos 12 times at 4 pm or 11 times at 8 the cuckoo and time no longer are synchronized.
Hi Mike! You can safely move the hour hand to match number of cuckoo calls. It's a friction fit and should just take a little bit of pressure.
It looks like I have the exact same clock that you were using in your video. An eight day clock with two big heavy weights. How high do I need to keep the clock off the ground in order for the weights or chain not to hit the ground
That is a great question! I actually recommend hanging the clock as high as you can with still being able to reach the hands on your dial. That way if you need to set the time again you can reach it with out needing a step stool. Your weights might still touch the ground depending on your height but not for several days since it's an 8 day. They drop a lot slower than the 1 day cuckoo like mine in the video. I have another cuckoo that I hung too high and actually rarely run it because it's out of my reach. I need to lower it so I can enjoy it again. I hope this helps!
I have that same cuckoo clock.
How can I stop the coo-coo clock from playing? 1:07 1:09
@@dryanvocal If you don’t want to hear the cuckoo call remove the weight that lowers during the call and set it aside. It should still keep time.
What happens if one weighted side doesn’t stay up. My coo coo size works but the other side does not
Either the chain has come off of the ratchet wheel or the ratchet wheel is faulty. If you open up the back you can take a look and see if it’s on the ratchet wheel. Sometimes this happens if they are tipped upside down.
Does a cuckoo clock have to be wind up to get it to work properly.I never had one.got one for free.Cleaned it properly
Thanks for your question! Most cuckoos are powered by the weights so no winding; there are a few out there that do require a key to wind though. They are mostly antique shelf cuckoos. As long as the weights are attached correctly to the chains and there are no other problems inside your cuckoo clock it should work.

My clock is not chiming in sequence it’s cuckooing 6at 8 and so on , how do I sort it please
Thank you it is tough keeping my cuckoo with the time . Is there a way to raise the bob so it won’t go either too fast or to slow? And I wind mine in the morning and before I go to bed

Sorry, but this information is not complete or accurate. For moving and hanging a small 1day clock, this video is fine. However, for large, older clocks with heavy weights several things must be considered. First, do not pack the weight in the same box as the clock: large weights can add up to 10 lbs in weight and can damage the carving on the clock if they shift or the box is juggled in any sort of sudden motion. Second, placing the twist tie through the chains should be very close to the base of the clock to prevent the chains from slipping from the gears - if done correctly, you won’t need to worry about chains slipping. Third, and most importantly for large clocks with heavy weights, the nail from which your clock will hang should be placed at an acute upward angle from the wall. In older homes with plaster walls, you can hang the clock anywhere, but it is always best to place the nail into a beam for added support. In newer homes with plasterboard walls, locating a beam is of utmost importance. Also, using a plastic screw/nail cover will add security for your clock. Again, the angle of the screw/nail is IMPORTANT. After hanging the clock and placing the pendulum and weights, start the pendulum with a gentle push and LISTEN for an even tic-toc - adjust the clock by shifting it slightly left or right until the beat is even. Good luck with your cuckoo clock!
Thank you for mentioning all these great tips!
It was running,I pulled weights and now I don’t know how too get level so it keeps running,I was told too put mark on wall so if it gets bumped it won’t run help
Hi, sorry for my delayed response. You can hang it and use a level underneath to make sure it's level before adding the weights and pendulum on. If it still stops running try tilting the clock just slightly to the right or left. It looks weird but if it runs better at one of these positions rather than being level then your clock is out of beat. To fix this I recommend this article below which goes into detail about how you can do it yourself. Best of luck! www.bavarianclockworks.com/blog/diy-cuckoo-clock-repair-guide/
Hi why my cuckoo clock does not cuckoo. Thanks
Sorry for the late reply. It could be a number of things. The best way to find out is to open up the back and check the bellow tops and lift wires. The paper or leather gets holes from wear and sometimes the lift wires get disconnected.
Hey Seth, Im restoring and old Cuckoo Clock and my clock has two different sized hooks. How do I tell which weights it needs?
Hi Johnathan, if you open the back and look at the movement, what writing do you see? It's likely a regula 25 (1-day) or 34 (8-day). Someone has probably replaced one of the hooks with a different kind. Usually if it's a 1 day cuckoo w/o music it's 275 grams, a 1 day with music might be 320 grams, and an 8 day w/o music is usually 1260 grams. timesavers.com has a great selection if you need to order. Shipping is a little high though. You could also get used on eBay. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@ClockswithSeth thanks for the quick reply. My clock says "Hubert Herr, Triberg, Germany. Unadjusted and no jewels." There are no other markings.
@@phxJohn2010 Are the weight hooks on the outer most chains or on the inside? A lot of 8-day's have the weight's hanging on the outer chains and 1 day's on the inside chains.
@@ClockswithSeth neither, actually. They're both on the right side. (One outside and one inside).
@@phxJohn2010 I think it’s a 1 day then. I did some looking and found a few for sale just now that have the weights positioned like you described.
I bought a used one online how can I test it to see if it works
Hi Michael, the easiest way is to take down a picture you have hanging and use it's nail or screw (make sure it's sturdy) to temporarily mount your cuckoo and try it out. Make sure the clock is level and the chains aren't tangled. Then set your weights on the chain hangers and pendulum on the wire loop. Gently start the pendulum and see if it will run and cuckoo at the top and bottom of the hour, and play music if it has that feature. You'll find out fast if it's going to work.
Oops. Just brought a cuckoo clock at an estate sale and am scared I moved it wrong. Just took it off the wall and put it in the car. Yikes. I didn't even know the topper came off and it fell and the bird snapped off 😭 hoping I can fix it with some wood glue
Hi Emily, sorry about your bird snapping off the top. I've had one fall off the wall before, it's scary. Yes, wood glue works wonders. Sometimes after it's done, you can't even tell it broke.
My clock is not running in sequence it’s cuckooing 6 at 8 etc please help me sort it
This is an easy fix. Move the hour hand, the shorter hand back 2 hours. It's just a friction fit. Never move the minute hand backwards though. Hope this helps!
It seems I have a new version the weights are just for show.
Yes. You probably have a battery powered cuckoo.
HOW DO YOU WIND IT UP??
Wall cuckoos like in this video are weight driven. There's no winding. Gently pulling one side of the chain while giving a little support to the weight as it rises back under the clock is how I like to raise them. There are some cuckoos that are spring driven and have a winding arbor you'll use a key for but these are less common. Check out my G.H.S. Shelf Cuckoo video to see one of those.
