I'm going to try this. Last year was rough, generally on the size and output of my corn but also worms had their input. Everything (was *was* there) I kept was for seed. Seem to be going well this year. Tomorrow is the big day to get greasy in the garden! Thanks much.
I don't think you have to add it every 4 dsys... more like once a week to week and a half... and you can get a trap that traps the moth that lays the eggs ...once you trap a moth then start with the mineral oil treatment after the silk comes out ..... after about 4 weeks put the trap out to see if the moths have died out yet... and keep it out until no more moths shownup in the trap ...at which time you can stop with the mineral oil treatment... If you get corn worms in your ears you can just simply wack off the part that was eaten and you can eat the rest of the corn on the cob ..
I don't know. I have grown corn and I have gotten corn from farmers. Most times there were no worms, sometimes there were. The ones that had a worm usually only had a very small bit eaten by the worm. We just cut it off. It was a lot less work than putting mineral oil on each individual ear of corn. I'm sure it works, but the few worms are not a big deal to me.
Since it’s my first corn harvest I’m not risking it. Maybe next year I’ll do half and see how the untreated half does. If it’s just a few then I could live with that. But the way we get pests here I’m cautious.
This method works by smothering the larve. And blocking the air. The oil is not toxic to them and would not kill by contact, so spraying would not work.
When you harvest your corn crop will you tell us if the mineral oil worked to kill the "PEST?" About how many rows of corn did you plant and how long are the rows? About how many ears do you get on a stalk? (I know I'm kind of nosy, it's just that your farm life is so interesting and educational to me!"
I'm not bothered by questions! Bring it. If it's too personal, I'll let you know. I didn't plant in rows, I planted in mounds in my three sisters garden. I did (I think!) 12 mounds? with about 8 corn kernels in each.I probably should have thinned them, but didn't. You can get 1-2 ears per stalk, depending on the variety of sweet corn. So I have a potential to get around 100 ears of corn or more out of my little garden. I'll reply again with a link to the three sisters garden playlist. we are doing it as a collaboration. I've not been 100% consistent with the mineral oil because of weather, but I will let you know for sure how many ears have worms!

Do you apply the Mineral Oil on the silk before or after pollination?
Keep up the good work
Happy gardening 🌱
Ummmm. I dont know. I just did it after I saw it on UA-cam. LOL
You apply AFTER pollination.

Can you spray it instead?

Rookie gardener here.good to know this info.my blue corn is already ripe since I got it in early.thanks for posting
I’ll let you know how it works!
Loved the video! Keep it up! Getting the corn treated this morning.
I’d hate to put mineral oil on every ear unless the corn field was pretty small.
Agreed. I hand a very small patch in my garden.
Good information Lorella on how to treat the corn from this worm.
Them little worms catch big bream, always a fishing trip after harvesting corn ,great country life
OK - I’m going with this method - intensive but least harm to other non-ear worm caterpillars 🤞
Did you make a follow up video to show how it worked?
Hi Viola, I don’t remember whether I did or not. But I’m thinking I didn’t. That would be a great thing, maybe I’ll try this year!
@@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm did you have a good corn harvest with no ear worms??

What was the success of the corn. Im doing a small patch this year and wanted to see if this method works better
Loving Vlogust lol hopefully I can join in next year 🤞
Great video..Great tip
What the farmer do with acre of corn ? Not like this
large farms spray chemicals. This is only good for small gardens.
Great idea but when my harvest comes in it will be 1330 ears of corn way to long.🤷♂️
Yep. This is definitely only for the backyard gardener.
Loving vlogust!
