Many of the bayous were once the main flow of the Miss. River. Bayou Lafourche for example, would deposit sediment and build the land up around it ever time it flooded creating a natural levee. This has since stopped and we are seeing land loss at an astounding rate as a result.
I grew up in Jeanerette bayou teche runs right through it heard stories told by the natives of the man eating tribe just thought it was all folklore 😂😂
Amazing how Bayou Teche was once the Mississippi River at one point in time.

Very interesting! I grew up in Patterson and now live in Thibodaux. Keep up the good work!
Thibodaux and Patterson history are both coming soon!
Dude how do you find this information? I would love to learn more about my area, and am very interested in the history of Louisiana’s major waterways

The Bayou Teche is right behind my house in New Iberia.
Must be gorgeous!
The Teche runs right by me, but I’m also close to the Atchafalaya. I actually live along Bayou Portage.
It’s a great place to be!
My 2nd great grandmother lived along the Bayou Teche. Said her family saw the first ship of slaves arrive in the area.
That is a sad and wild thing to see.
