I don't understand how Soul Star was not considered insanely awesome when it was released. When I got it on release my jaw dropped for pretty much the ENTIRE game; it was one of the few times you could really see what a properly done Sega CD game could do and how its sprite scaling and rotation hardware blew away the SNES equivalent. For some reason people barely even know about its existence today.
I believe it was the audience it was exposed to. Few people played it, and I think it sold terribly. The Sega CD just didn't have the installed base for these types of games to build any hype at all. They came, they went, and few cared.
Yep,, it is a masterpiece and hard as hell,,lol,, great game , core design always did great things with the sega cd hardware, look at thunderstike, and battle corps , or even bc racers was great on sega cd... ,
Same me for and my brother,, we are huge sega fans... and had the sega cd... and soul star even shut up my best friend who was a Super Nintendo could do no wrong fanboy... after he played soul star he had his mom order him a genesis and sega cd from Fingerhut!!! Lol.... the 90’s were the best time in gaming!!! Period
@MichelleObama isAman Sega CD was released as its own system, in several forms. Check out the CDX, WonderMega, etc. FIY, Sega Genesis was $150 when the add-on version was released. I was a rather successful add-on too and has a solid library of games, including awesome originals games like Sonic CD, Soul Star, Terminator, Snatcher, Popful Mail and the Lunar series, as well as definitive versions of some of 16- bit era's most popular games (e.g.: Earthworm Jim and Final Fight). These games are buried bellow the pile of the FMV trash that Sega of American was obsessed with but are still there. Sega-CD alone had nothing to do with Sega eventual downfall. The 32X was definitely the starting point though.
It was a crime that Sega's much improved, quite powerful, hardware was basically untapped and not pushed to potential...instead, it was mostly cartridge games with a title screen and cd audio, but the same was done with the Amiga CD32 as well.
Keio flying squadron is a masterpiece, it's well done, and really original, and it doesn't feel like a mega drive game. It's the best shooter on the sega CD, at least for me.
Love my Sega CD. I bought mine day 1. Never felt like it was a bad system. Loved Night Trap and Sewer Shark. Also loved my Turbo CD and 3DO. I was spoiled only child in the 90's lol
The Mega CD had the potential to be a 16 bit shoot them up beast with its fast CPU (almost twice the Mega Drive clock speed, same as Neo Geo) and sprite scaling capabilities. A shame there weren't more of them. I would have loved to see a Tunder Force entry on Mega CD. The closest thing to a CD version of a (2D) Thunder Force is Gate of Thunder on Pc-Engine Super CD-ROM², and it's a great game.
There were many missed opportunities with the Sega CD. Sega messing around with FMV really stunted the library of the system in both size and possibilities. Every Sega franchise should have had representation of some kind. And I agree, more shoot'em ups should have been a no brainer, especially with the CPU and scaling abilities of the system.
Silpheed was one of the 3 games I had for sega cd as a kid, other games was stellar fire and the awful sewer shark that at the time I didnt know how bad it wad
It would have been great if all of the PC Engine CD shoot'em ups were ported to the Sega CD like Star Soldier. Gates of Thunder would have been a cool addition to Lords of Thunder as well.
all I would like to say: be it the first or second season of your show this is a BONA FIDE Sega Lord X production "I mean seeeriously maaan" .... and by the way I thought there was going to be more load time time in and entries and delay because it being a bunch of games made for a early CD system, but judging from content above re-seeing it now for like the third time, as time has come and Went during this time I have not really decided 100% which game would suit me in the best way, however I kept coming back to Slipheed I am also thinking that what if Soul STAR should have been offered as 32x+CD combo game it had been used to arise up to full potential, more so than the FMV releases that seem not to differ much from the perspective if we compare the initial non relases. 32X/CD could have been a good system but I have been under using the MEGA CD for too long that I feel like have offended a legal law and decision about what was fair or unfair to do. Silpheed looks as if it has a game play Outlook that is easy to apprehend from the get go at later on also to comprehend to the good and well full extent. The opening of hangar in cinematic drama with flow tha introduces the game makes me of DARXIDE and STELLAR ASSAULT two games I own at home that I (to be honest) LOVE and that really took me places first time I tried them. This is an episode on your channel among old and new a like that has a swift charm in presentation and makes me think to myself how much MEGA CD deserves more attention today, what do you guys think, all of you that have seen more or less every part of the Sega Lord X show, and browsed other places on the web will thinking this same thing?
Haha, man it's like that sometimes. I absolutely suck at Ikaruga. No matter what I do I just can't find a way to win. Sometimes a game just clashes with you in some way.
The enemy ships you had to shoot were legit polygons, but most of what you see is simply video in the background. It was still pretty impressive back then.
@@SegaLordX yes it was impressive but I used to laugh in my friends face when he would bring up Star Fox but now knowing that it was video backgrounds and nothing was real but the tiny little ships I'm going to have to confess to him that the Super NES display better polygons than the Sega CD LOL at that time
look, dingus, the only cool things sega has ever made were the original SG systems, the SC computer system, definitely that one, and the master system.... the saturn was pretty cool too but its kind of different.... friggin dingus

A great feature of SoulStar was two player Co-op. Having a dedicated gunner was really fun!
Thank you for these videos. They are keeping me busy while I quarantine during the COVID19 pandemic.

its good 🥰
Soul Star, Keio and Silpheed seem to be the most interesting ones here. Microcosm is also another interesting mention even with all its flaws.
SoulStar was awesome! I still listen to the soundtrack nowadays.
"Sol Feace, more like Sol Feces" - AVGN
Did he really say that? Or is it just something that sounds like a thing he said?
@@opaljk4835 he really said it but that was a game he actually liked. He just made fun of the name.
Great choices and I agree that these are some of the best the Sega CD had to offer. All great gems. I love my Sega CD.
My lord, Robo Aleste and Android Assault are my personal picks for #1 and #2 on this console...and the latter is just criminally underrated overall.
I like to see the Sega CD get some love.
Love my Sega CD. I bought mine day 1. Never felt like it was a bad system. Loved Night Trap and Sewer Shark. Also loved my Turbo CD and 3DO. I was spoiled only child in the 90's lol
Sold my copies of lords of thunder, soulstar and silphead. I regret it alot :( still have robo eleste and android assault tho :)
I think we all have sold stuff we regret. As we get older we realize how futile that is.
Found your channel by chance and I'm glad I did! Subscribed.
Welcome back. Glad you found it again.

I love this guy
cool man, I loved this retrospective. I'm going to try and find Keio flying squadron
Good luck finding it for less than a few hundred bucks
I would play all these. Robo Aleste alone makes me regret not buying into optical media before it got so pricey
Great work Sir thank you
I think it's hillarious that I searched, "Best SHMUPS for Switch," and the same #1 was the Sega CD's best.
Silpheed was one of the 3 games I had for sega cd as a kid, other games was stellar fire and the awful sewer shark that at the time I didnt know how bad it wad
Sylpheed for me, going to do a gameplay video, one of these days.
Liar, you never did it.
@@claudiodiaz9752 One of these days, I´m still up to it.
Soul Star was great. the music was some of the best on the console
I love my lords of thunder .. i still have my original turbo duo but sold my sega version a while back (insert regret)
Lords was a great shooter. That soundtrack was epic.
Sega Lord X not sure if you had a turbo duo / pc engine but Gates of Thunder had an amazing soundtrack too
It would have been great if all of the PC Engine CD shoot'em ups were ported to the Sega CD like Star Soldier. Gates of Thunder would have been a cool addition to Lords of Thunder as well.
No A/X-101???
Why not? ;-p
Remember living silpheed and android assault
bro keyo squadron is AMAZING
gaiares for sega genesis is my all time favorite side scrolling space ship shooter
Keio is now not so cheap to import it seems but there is another way.
A demo was released and with codes, all levels of the game are accessible!
I know this is 4 years old but have you seen Soulstar on the Jaguar CD? It's now playable and is truly amazing.

Great video, take my sub
ALL of them (except Starblade) are good shooters!
lords of thunder is a masterpiece also here in EU
I really wish I had a sega CD. I want the model 1 as I'm a collector but they're expensive af and have tons of problems.
"... ... ... powered by a steam engine."
Somehow I found robot aleste much more difficult ...I need to give it more time maybe
Haha, man it's like that sometimes. I absolutely suck at Ikaruga. No matter what I do I just can't find a way to win. Sometimes a game just clashes with you in some way.
ironkong26 i find it incredibly harder than musha also. I tried hard and im good at shooters. I think i am...
Love ur vids just a small request can u play the BGM a bit louder in your vids I can barely hear it
I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the feedback.
every time i see a genesis i picture CJs house from san andreas
So regret selling my Sega collection due to hard times.... I had all these and unlike others- It can't be emulated as far as I know....sobs.
What do you mean?? Every game on the Sega CD can and has been emulated for quite a long time now. Look up retroarch.
all of these emulate perfectly on my hacked Vita via RetroArch
Con la bios
Yea i have it working fine on my phone now with retro arch. This comment is 4 years old!
Ah HA !!!!!! HERE are your thoughts on Lords of Thunder Sega VS NEC versions
Sega released a Genesis disc on ps4 they need to do another release of all the other consoles.
Soul Star is 200 bucks on eBay now 😢.
6:28 ROBO ALESTE!
shmups rules
How do we ask sega to release a sega cd or sega dreamcast disc on ps4?
Hit their social media feeds with constant reminders that folks want them.
No Night Strikers ? Denied
i didn't know silpheed had video backgrounds i thought it was real time so disappointing

What other shmups are there?
Mainly FMV based stuff.
@@SegaLordX Hmmmm, Microcosm...
The Sega cd was wasted. I bought one on launch week. Sold it 6 months later. No games. Shame on sega because it could have been awesome.
look, dingus, the only cool things sega has ever made were the original SG systems, the SC computer system, definitely that one, and the master system.... the saturn was pretty cool too but its kind of different.... friggin dingus
the sega CD is a rottin piece of shit
kinda surprised you talked about starblad and soul star, but completely said nothing about a/x-101, novastorm, microcosm. they are in the same genre.
A purposefully left off FMV games. Starblade was kinda special since it wasn't originally FMV rendered.
