I like that we get together every four years to talk about Unsung Story. It's like a family tradition. Like we all walk into a room, and there's a conference table with a fancy chair at the end turned away. Then CoffeePotato slowly turns the chair around and says, "You're probably wondering why I've gathered you here today." And there's a calendar on the wall, and we all look at it and go, "Four years already? Did Unsung Story come out of hibernation?"
I remember when this went public. I was so excited for Playdek. Their concept art had me really excited, but I didn't get a chance to back it. I followed it closely, and as soon as I saw Little Orbit picked it up, I looked at their previous games they made and they'd done absolutely nothing like FFT. Clearly, it shows. I wouldn't call their art style "WoW-esque", but it's definitely some weird mix that was not necessary. I get that they're trying to bring this project back to life, but it absolutely is not the spiritual successor to FFT in any way. As soon as I saw it was going to be 3D assets and heavily robot/steam punk-themed, I lost interest. The main character customization would've been nice (Because that's a huge draw for me), but now that it's gone that's the final straw. I wish Little Orbit luck on completing this game, but I just don't think it's going to be as successful as they would like if it ever finishes. They're just going to lose more money at this point.
I don’t think we can fault Little Orbit for the game being 3D; unless I’m mistaken it was looking something like that even before LO picked it up… Either way, they’ve got my tentative support for both not being the guys who mismanaged it AND for seemingly being self-aware about the burden they were taking on.
Oh dang, I'd forgotten about this. I played the early access chapter 1, what little I could bear of it anyway, and yeah it was.. bad Curious to see how it goes from here
While I was reading the update I wondered if Potato would talk about it more 😄. I'm still "in support" of it, but I've not kickstarted anything since. Little Orbit's been trying.
I'm still not sure why have regular sized characters on isometric grid from bird view perspective, I generally ignore games which do that at this point.
@@CoffeePotato Original comment may read unintentionally mean, but there was definitive shift in clarity of presentation when it comes to some modern SRPG games due to increased fidelity. Of course it depends, and I did play only few of such games, but you and up relying too much on UI and portraits to figure out what is going on at times. So basically increased visual fidelity was a overall downgrade for SRPG games as presentation goes, which may be partially a reason of people never being happy with modern SRPG visuals at times. There is no solution to this, considering general modern expectations. I just kinda got reminded of most succesfull or troubled development wise SRPG games when I was looking at screenshots of Unsung and that kinda prompted comment without much thinking, especially when you mentioned fire effects.
I remember this was the first kickstarter I was interested in and ruined my trust in them lol At least every other kickstarter I've backed has worked out 😅
I remember following this game's Kickstarter as well as Project Phoenix back in the day. Disastrous as it was, it still fared better than Project Phoenix. 😭
@@CoffeePotato I think YT deleted my comment because I put a link to the Kickstarter in. It was an RTS Tactical JRPG touted as having AAA Talent onboard, including Nobuo of Final Fantasy fame. They only asked for 100k USD, earned 1 million, and didn't make the game. They instead used the money to make an Advanced Wars style game called Tiny Metal, and said if it was successful, they'd use the proceeds to make Project Phoenix. (It never happened.)
@@CoffeePotato I think it was the stark realization of a bad plan. Overly promised feature creep, ambitious stretch goals, and not realizing what salaries cost or what it takes to make a game.
Matsuno should have stick to his guns style-wise. By that I mean, low poly graphics and 2d sprites. Tactics Ogre and FFT have such a elegant and timeless presentation, this game already looks dated, and honestly, this realistic models look jarring in the grid based arena. It is sad that they seems to be struggling so much with this project, it shouldn’t be so hard to make a game like this with the talent involved, but here we are.
i do hope its time for a redemption arc, btw... i just found a game today called, sword of convallaria.. composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, which i was sold on alone, also the game is free!?... check it out
Wild how they spent so much money to end up doing what NIS would with a game like this. Though probably worse. I despise pc UI, the diablo style inventory or any of that is just an extra step when you end up with a co troller in your hand and ends up antagonizing a large (if not majority) playerbase. But the PC guys, who become these PC developers, want that stamp which shouldn’t actually matter to them when everything is verifiable efficiency comparisons when you get down to it that don’t favor their product. UI can work one way one way, by that I mean all the weapons and gear and stats, and be presented in a way that works or be presented in a different way to get this other display type or whatever to work and it’s just pointless. Maybe 10 years back I played some final fantasy game, maybe 5 or 4, and we know what the menuing in that was like, but after looking at the gamefaqs weapon and equipment stats they actually gave players almost everything they needed to make informed choices about equipment except a certain knife didn’t explain it’s increased crit rate. Anyways: the world is designed and app that stuff annoys me as I look at the world around us and just see design issues everywhere. We live in a stifling world perpetrated by mobile app design in almost every arena we enter as cognizant humans weighed down by sentience. These silly “yeah I want to drag and drop in the inventory consumers be dammed,” types get on my last nerve. The work of UI is to make things more simple from presentation to implementation. That means readability so we make informed choices as players/consumers.

Yes, it sort of slid off the shelf slightly, and we must address the several inches of dust.
Nice to see that they are still trying
How have I never heard of this???
@@TitaniumLegman It's pretty unsung, you might say.
Sorry for Matsuno for wasting time and tarnishing his reputation by associating with scammers.
