Tyler should do a reaction video for each song, all Canadian bands. They have YT creators who do that alone for their channels. But it'll be better as he has more of an understanding of our Canadians' identity than others who just listen to music and react.
(My fave is watching young Black people first time reacting to Blondie's "Rapture" 😅)

The years listed are the year ppl uploaded videos. That Blue Rodeo song is 30+ years old. Also some of these long intros were very common, in my opinion, in the 90s.
Home for a Rest is a fantastic bar song. It’s gets everyone up and singing along. I fact I stopped this video to listen to it lol and then resumed your video. You need to give that song a real chance. It’s so much fun!
The Tea Party makes me laugh. I’m not a fan but they’re from my city (Windsor, On). My cousin, who lives in Alberta loves them. We discussed them via messenger one day and we I’m walking the lead and the drummer were across the street having lunch on a patio. For the record, the years you mention associated with the music videos are likely just when they got added to UA-cam. All of these songs are significantly older than 10-15 years. Most of them are played on classic rock stations here alongside Nirvana and Oasis etc.
That’s why they don’t sound like current US music, lest we perpetuate the idea that Canadian music is a couple of decades behind the US.
Home for a Rest was released in 1990, and Brother Down is the only one from the 2000’s at all so it sounds dated because it is.

Some bands like Helix only skimmed by, but at least got some airplay because of Much. I remember seeing the singer Brian Volmer working at a corner store by Masonville Mall, and I was really saddened by the plight of our music industry. He told me he owned it as a franchise, but that was a lie to save face. I had a band at the time, but I hung up any dreams of making a living of it if a band as big as Helix couldn't make ends meet.

    • @randymorash7013

Really it started long before Much, in the 1970s when the Can Con rules came into effect for top 40 radio requiring 35% of air played music be by Canadian writers or performers. The reason that the selections were from the 90s onward was because by then making a music video to be released along with your song was standard procedure and because the person selecting was of the age that they overlooked the music from the 70s and 80s that was popular before their time, thus no April Wine, no Lesque, no Chilliwack, no Stan Rogers, no Crowbar, no Stompin' Tom, no Rita McNeil, no Rough Trade, and many others. So when Much arrived in 1984 there was a core of Canadian acts to draw on that were popular because of CanCon.

    • @telilah85
      @telilah85 2 місяці тому +2

@@randymorash7013 my point still stand that a lot of the bands listed were from the 90s and early 2000s because of much music. No one listed acts from 2010s or 2020s because we consume music differently. No one listens to radio and much music became all just reality tv shows (we can blame bell for that). People get playlists from Spotify or searching directly through UA-cam. There is nothing as far as I know to directly promote Canadian acts anymore in the way that muchmusic did until like 2006.

If you listen to Canadian radio, and I might point out that radios still come in cars for a reason, then the stations you listen to are required to broadcast a certain amount of Canadian-made content. It was the regulatory approach to how Canadians view and listen to radio and TV that lead to all of these bands (and certain Canadian TV) becoming popular here but unknown basically everywhere else. That's kind of why the government was batting around a bill to regulate Internet content delivery services like UA-cam to force their algorithm to comply with the previous Canadian law.

And as a Canadian, I'm familiar with Trebel Charger, but I honestly hadn't realized they were Canadian. Their song was playing so much on radio up here in the 90's/00's, that i just assumed they were American.
And yeah, Canadian artists tend to love their soft intros to songs. "Home for a Rest" and "Hasn't Hit me Yet" both get very rocky once you get past the intro (especially Home for a Rest); you might like them better after you skipped ahead.
Other honorable mentions that don't even scratch the surface:

Disclaimer: I'm an older guy so my music goes a bit farther back... Bear with me. ;) I was more of a rocker/metalhead, so some bands that come to mind include Heilix (Rock You was their biggest song), The Killer Dwarfs (We Stand Alone), Trooper (Raise a Little Hell), Annihilator (Alison Hell), Sacrifice (Reanimation), and Sword (Trouble Is). Rush, Triumph, and April Wine had some success in the US, but they are all awesome bands and you should dig deep into their music history.
Less hard rock (and probably closer to your liking), we have the Stampeders (Sweet City Woman), The Sheepdogs (I Don't Know), Chilliwack (My Girl), Kim Mitchel (Go For Soda), Max Webster (Let Go the Line), Honeymoon Suite (I've Got a New Girl Now), Platinum Blonde (Crying Over You), Aldo Nova (Fantasy), Streetheart (What Kind of Love Is This), and Haywire (Dance Desire). I am not sure if Sass Jordan or Lee Aaron got airplay in the US, but they also were popular here.
Anyway, that's all I have for the moment. I hope you give some of these a shot.

Sacrifice went to my high school
My friends are friends with Platinum Blonde
My other friends opened for Killer Dwarfs and Anvil - I used to get my rocker chick hair done at House Of Lords alongside some of the Dwarfs 😆
My friend knew one of Lee Aaron’s exes
A client of mine used to date the drummer of Honeymoon Suite
Oh ya, I dated the touring drummer for Glass Tiger
      😆
Several friends recorded at Metal Works, founded by the drummer/singer of Triumph
I’m seeing why Americans think Canada 🇨🇦 is small 😆

That's pretty awesome that you had so many run-ins with people in the Canadian music scene. You must live in Terahnah. ;) Yeah, I can totally see why the Americans ask if we "know Dave from Halifax"... it's because you literally know him! Haha!
Ooh! Another good Canadian metal band I just thought of is Buckettruck. I saw them in this little bar in Charlottetown in the early 2000s. There was something like 25 to 30 people in the audience, but they played their souls out. Very cool to see them live.

Jeff Martin of The Tea Party has a very interesting haunting voice. Big Wreck, while considered an American-Canadian band, is all Canadian now and has always been fronted by amazing guitarist and principal songwriter Ian Thornley. "That Song" was the most played song on Canadian rock radio between 1995 and 2016 (although I thought it was released in 1997?).
