  • Mike Mangini talks about playing Mike Portnoy's parts on the Dream Theater Images and Words tour.
    Mike Mangini: Rockstars In Cars (visiting Cosmo Music) Web Series,
    Episode 6 of 13.
    We picked up drum legend Mike Mangini of Steve Vai, Annihilator, Extreme, and Dream Theater fame from his hotel downtown and drove him up to Cosmo Music. We talked a whole lot of drums, feuded over hockey, and had a surprise street-side moment on the way.

    It's a simple process...first get my hair to look like Cher's...then get to the music :). Mike Mangini has a very procedural and methodical approach to music that makes him the best teacher of drums I've ever found when it comes to demystifying things but that also takes all the mystery away, and with it, the fun. Thanks to him I was able to play 3 over 2 in 1/2 hour. Total opposite of Portnoy. The ultimate technician , completely set to serve the rest of the band....as an employee, or that's the impression. If you watched the documentary Hired Gun...that's the situation he's in. He makes sure he transmits that in what he says every time he talks about DT.

    Yeah, this man is a hired mercenary with a very compatible personality to Dream Theater's current comfort. Portnoy brought them that slight unfamiliarity and uncomfort that would help them work and break through their own mundane shells.

      - That's an ad hominem Portnoy fanboys use as a strawman to take a swing at Mangini, because they can't factually argue that Portnoy is "better".

      @@danlc95 I agree somewhat. Mangini had just as good of a feel as Portnoy when he started with DT. But his feel does sound better on the newer DT albums. I think Mangini is between a rock and a hard place. Some say he sounds like a drum machine if he plays stuff verbatim but then others complain if he changes things then hes not being true to the source material. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Only fix I can think of is play with more passion and less robotic but stick to the source material when appropriate but also have some fun experimentation when applicable. I think that's how you might be able to please mostly everyone, but its a tight rope to walk.

    Mangini has a great attitude as well as great aptitude toward what he plays when he figures out Portnoys parts....in another words: there really is no points in being a dick about the same parts that Mangini learns from Portnoy...they are part of a partciular song and Mangini gets that....as any professional drummer would know...there is NOTHING wrong with that...

    Well it's as simple as this...Portnoy written the drums for the best album ever in
    progressive metal Images&Words a pioneer ahead of his time,drums for Metropolis,Under A Glass Moon,Take The Time,Surrounded...what Mangini or any Mangini likes or dislikes is irrelevant at this time after 25 years...I would like to see Mangini and DT laying out something similar now...which is impossible their music is nowhere close to that level and it's not the technique but the "feeling and soul".A drummer sounding like a drum machine cannot bring that back to this band that's what most people don't understand.

      Who says you lose feel and groove that way? I can play both ways, and I don't feel like I lose anything when I switch. It's not like the left hand only expresses itself on the snare and has no feel on the hi hat LOL! Hopefully you feel the groove with your whole body so it doesn't really matter what hand plays what aside from logistics.

      He has different sounds on the right than from the left. He always plays with groove and feel. You guys just like to make up strawman fallacies in attempt to malign him. Lame.

    Those ZBT hats he's talking about sound like absolute shit. ZBT's are hideous. I respect the hell out of Mangini but combining his extremely robotic style of drumming with these awful cymbals makes him sound even more MIDI. Dramatic Turn of Events is my personal favorite DT album w/ Mangini, and I cringe constantly listening to it. Sounds like a beginner in their bedroom cymbal, like with the bunk beds and all.

      Ryanem Probably didn’t help that the album was written and recorded without Mangini, and they sent him demos with the drum parts already programmed. He just learned the parts and added touches here and there.

      @thecoolestdad 6 років тому +1

      I thought the same thing, but then I figured, there is a sound that he must like to use from those beginner hi hats. Effects or something. The dude is too talented and knows sounds too well, to use those ZBTs blinded. He has them there for a reason.

    • @shplog2
      @shplog2 6 років тому

      Because he has poor taste in cymbals^.. and drum sounds lol. He needs to just change everything, except his octabons.

      I disagree with your statement. I have been playing drums for around 50 years and getting a good sound out of drum shells is the hardest thing ever. As far as cymbals go, I, like everybody else used to use Zildjians because that was about all we had, until Paiste came on the scene. Then I used those until Sabians came out and now I am still with Sabian. I hav a pair of ZBT hi hats that came with a used set of drums that I bought about two years ago. I kept the cymbals that came with it, and donated the drum set after restoring them to a small home missions church. I never use the ZBts, but I will keep them for maybe some trashy sounds later on when I layer them with something else.

      Portnoy wrote/ writes seminal drum parts. The same way Petrucci writes seminal guitar parts. Mangini just plays what he's told most of the time. New DT music lacks personality in the rhythm section as a consequence, and so the music suffers too. For Mangini to remove a big chunk of what made these songs great in the first place is a bizarre decision. Both on his side and on the band's too.

    I hate to say... no... it hurts my heart to say... I can no longer listen to Dream Theater. By THIS interview... they have successfully erased Mike Portnoy from the band. Jordan wrote Dark??? Come on... who are you fooling. Portnoy WAS Dream Theater... and as much as i adore Mangini, and as much hope as I had, Dream Theater is no more for me. But then again, I am simply one man... just my heart talking.

      Michael Reynolds totally agree with you. I’ve tried my best to keep listening new dream theater songs with the same enthusiasm, but it just something doesn’t feel right. And It’s not about mangini, it’s just the whole concept of the band, it’s not the same without portnoy.

      Jordan wrote the bridge after the 2nd corus John wrote the lyrics and Portnoy wrote the whole last riff. I agree with you this DT is bad but please do your research befor you comment Jordan has been writing parts of songs for years Like the end of In the name of God for instance

    2:20 What Jordan always wanted. I bet Mike Portnoy was such a prick. Like a dictator type guy. This guy is 100000X better than him anyway so the band really won huge.
