Very good review lol. I have to seriously pause my stance on amc stubs with this gem. I like the writing with the cops because they have the education of a high schooler and if they aren't detectives this is very grounded for how complex they can think when they're also rationing ebt cards and be new being a ride together pair. LOL Their dilemma also underlines how heuristic thinking by law enforcement can be skewed with one twist of identity politics against the statistics they routinely engage in educational updates over.

I really liked this film although I agree with your message critiques.
Personally, unless a film is made by a hateful director or is outright hate filled with its message, I generally try not to hold those interpretations against it.
I think it's important to have films where there are female abusers, perpetrators, and their inherent victim perception. Women can abuse too, and that is important to represent. The structure of the film really portrays that excellently. It is just parts of the script that are so blunt that if the rest of the film is between a 7-9/10 that was a 5 and kinda missed the mark.
I don't think it's fair to blame a film for being adored by bigots. American Psycho is a great example of a left wing critique/satire on them, yet they unironically attach themselves to Bateman. Let alone I doubt this film ever garners a wide audience to be viewed in such a way.
Idk I like the film 7or8/10, but I will need to rewatch it. And it is the film after 6 months when I do, I may also really dislike it for those faults.
It's an interesting film. Out of all the serial killer films this year, Longlegs, Trap, etc. They all missed the mark for me. This one largely landed it.
Although Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure is releasing this year and from the reviews at the film festivals, it looks dope af. Unfortunately, it will likely be slept on in the west.

@@vispian7688 thank you so much for sharing your well thought out opinion of this film. Yea I think you made a lot of great points. I agree that it’s not fair to blame a film for just because bigots interpret it for their own validation. Because really any bigot can watch any movie and decide to take what they want from it. I was just saying that this film was framed and written in a way that was one dimensional enough for those bigots to actually have reason to interpret it the way that they do. American Psycho has so many layers of intentional satire that it doesn’t bother me that idiots misinterpret it. But I don’t feel that strange darling was developed or nuanced enough in that department. It’s still a good film and I enjoyed it. It just mostly comes down to the fact that I wish it was written with more maturity, understanding and intellect to develop its very serious themes more.
Btw Cure is an excellent film! The west will always sleep on film that has the 1 inch barrier of subtitles unless it’s parasite lol

@TheMisfitPond I can understand that. I guess my counterpoint would be that structurally, the film is nuanced it plays with your perception. But yeah, the script could be remarkably better. At least the performances can keep it together!
Sorry I completely mistyped. Although Cure is amazing. I meant his new one, Cloud, which just got shown at Venice Film Fest. Releasing in Japan this month.
(He also released a really cool short horror film called Chime this year as well, which a lot of people rate highly, I have some issues with it, but it's good)

6.5/10.....Saw a matinee showing today with a decent amount of people. The best parts of this film is the cinematography and the lead actress. To me this film had potential to be really good, but the tone of the movie was rough. Felt like they should've told this film linearly and without the songs. Just keep a very minimal suspense score. Writing at times was cringe but not overbearble. Like you, I went in blind but actually felt let down because this could've been a lot stronger. Enjoy watching your reviews after seeing the movie Brotha

This movie was almost good. It tried too hard to be Pearl and the entire 3rd act was terrible. It's "message" was about as nuanced as a facebook post lol. Like yeah dude, we get it. You don't need to spell it out for us.

I honestly loved watching this movie, it felt very fresh and exciting. However I agree with you that some of the dialogue was cringy and I also thought the last scene with the cops was lame. Regarding the treatment of the gender roles, I appreciated that the movie goes all out with the controversial portrayal of women, it feels more realistic… I hate it when you can tell a director is trying to be safe and avoiding being “problematic”. To me, this was a 9/10!

I praise the director for the direction, women do abuse their position in society as women and to let that rock in a film is very ballsy.
You sounded kinda “woke”or something in this review.
I like your channel but i admit i felt a bit bothered by your overprotectiveness of the image of women.
There’s a ton of cases of women doing just this in this year alone and there’s nothing fake about being SA but there’s also nothing fake about female sociopaths.
    No offense,just respect,food for thought.
    Take care man.

@@skywalkersbutido6375 no worries dude. I knew that some people would interpret my thoughts as “woke” even though I absolutely hate that word and always have. Remember I did mention in the review, it has to do with the fact that it wasn’t nuanced. I have no problem shedding light on serious issues no matter where they land on the political spectrum. My issue is that I feel like it wasn’t developed well and resorted to tired out stereotypes to get its point across a la the cop characters. This could’ve been a super thought provoking piece of cinema and to me came off one dimensional.
