Don't Call It Mystery was my first Yumi Tamura manga and I immediately got attached to Totonou's unique perspective on each case and criminal and, as the series goes on, it gets better and better (vols 9-10 gave me chills). If I hadn't stumbled upon it, I wouldn't have known about Yumi Tamura and her stellar storywriting. Thank you for the excellent analysis colleen!!
The latest volume of don’t call it mystery (9-10) was just fantastic I literally couldn’t put it down lol I feel like it really nails episodic mysterys so well
Great police abolitionist example there with the stairs fall example, while the police and third parties are obsessed with identifying and punishing perpetrators of crime they have no interest in helping victims recover from their wounds (or developing interventions to stop any perpetrator from repeating actions)
I find Totonou almost uncomfortably relatable - especially in the scene where hes waiting for food and overhears a bunch of conversations that he can't seem to stop himself musing over. Also having niche interests and difficulties with social norms. I'm really lookinf forward to reading volume 9-10 when they arrive this week 🥳 thank you so much for introducing me to what is one of my favourite manga
I love Don't Call it Mystery so much. Mysteries are one of my favourite genres and I love the ponderings about life that Yumi Tamura includes. I found them to be really progressive for how socially conservative Japan is. Would love any other similar manga
I was really curious about this manga but you’ve convinced me and now I’ve ordered the first omnibus! Something about your description of it along with the unique art style you showed off. Oh and the main character looks quirky and charming!
@@ColleensMangaRecs omg thank you so much! 😭 I haven’t heard from you since like back when you were sorta first taking off! Idk if you recognize my username or not.
Fantastic vid as always Colleen! Up to vol 6 here and really enjoying the meandering nature of the series. My semi-hot take is that mystery on its own is oftentimes kinda meh but it absolutely shines when it's used as a 'secondary' genre, and Don't call it mystery is a fantastic example of that! Gotta love Yumi Tamura ❤ (Also for what it's worth, as a European viewer: Walt's is really great, it's hard to order manga here if you don't want to support Amazon and Walt's is genuinely my #1 pic if my local comic shop doesn't stock a series)
yeah its like the mystery isn't trying to be a riddle or puzzle, it's pretty straight forward in most of the stories (also love to hear love for Walt's!! I love working with them!}
This might be a new manga series to read! Thanks, for the rec! For future, reference please don't spoil details like who done it and why in a series such as this. I wished you at least put the spoilers tag before you revealed the culprit, of the first chapter, and a skip ahead time stamp. Regardless, I will probably read the series after I forget what you revealed. It seems like a intriguing series that I might enjoy!
Loved the genre history bit! Now I can use this knowledge to say that the Sukeban Deka manga falls short of Van Dine's rules for detective fiction, although it has a fair bit of detective work in it!
i've come across different manga content creators that praised "don't call it mystery" but you're definitely the one who convinced me to give it a shot ! great video as always
Oh Edogawa Ranpo mentioned! When I worked at a used bookstore, we got a book of some of his short stories. The one about the chair had me gripped. I read all the stories in one shift!
This seems very similar to Keigo Higashino, who puts focus on the motivation of the murderer and the effects it has on all people affected by the crime. Sometimes he even reveals the identity of the murderer up front to have more room delving into the characters backrounds and their ways of moving forward.
Oh shit this is cool bc I’ve been reading Umineko recently, and the rules and nature of mysteries are HUGE parts of that story. Van Dine and Knox are mentioned by name in that game.
I found this manga September last year. Helped me during a really dark time. Second manga I read; first was Burn the House Down. As someone with AuDHD his ramblings remind me of me😅 I need to check out the drama. Saw on Viki it had high ratings! I had already heard of the actor as he's well known in Jdrama's but had no idea he played the lead.
It's been a minute since I've seen you!!! 🎉 YOUR HAIR IS FUCKING SLAYING!!! It looks so professionally done! And you look like a manga character too!! 💙
i only needed to read 7seeds to know yumi tamura's greatness. i'll be reading anything she creates!! have you read koudaike no hitobito btw? i follow you on twitter and see you recommend a shoujosei everyday. pls read it if you haven't yet!!
@@ColleensMangaRecs pls continue it for clear skin hehe. yeah but it's so wholesome too! i love how kie makes up the funniest scenarios in her head whenever she's stressed or going through tough times. she's so precious to me

The last volume was truly amazing!! Loved getting more story on Aoto and an elaboration of the case he messed up on
Bro yaps until the criminal can't take it anymore and comes forward. Brilliant strategy.
He just like me fr (so annoying people admit to murder)

I am screaming oh my god oh god!! This was my favourite manga last year!
LOVE this series! First found out about it through your channel, so thank you! :)
i can't wait to read this when it's completed! the introspection and interesting viewpoints have me sold!
i accidentally stumbled upon the jdrama and have been obsessed ever since

5:18 Huh that sounds super intresting
I want to buy it but the pricing is soooooo expensive for my country ;_;
And it’s not available digitally too. So even if I want to, I can’t read it
I get more and more jealous of your hair every video ❤ love your style and how you research. Keep doing you 💪
I might start reading this
Clicking “like” now, watching when I can pay attention. Glad the block left for a Tamura vid. 😊
Accidentally spoiled the ending for myself here 😭 great video tho!
Sorry😔. But Luckily I saw your comment and dipped out
I only talk about the first chapter so that's all you have to read to watch
@@ColleensMangaRecs oh ok!! That's great to hear. I obviously haven't read it so I was worried more would be spoiled 🩷🩷
I love your outfit 😍
thank youuuuu! was trying to serve detective lol
Toto is the best lonely mushroom boy
I will never understand why Yumi Tamura is huge in Japan but not outside of it...
Great video and also your hair looks sick as hell

I've read a bit of it but never finished the whole thing. It's such a goofy series but I expect nothing less from that mangaka.
