    Joaquin Phoenix acting in Gladiator was amazing. To play such emotionally damage character is very difficult to do. Richard Harris played very good as Caesar and Commodious father.

      I wish he got Oscar for that role. He was robbed. The way he played was a big part of this movie success. He was such a villain, scary, intimidating. And you could feel that vulnerability, the craziness, he was sociopath, you could feel it. Amazing acting.

    "Your faults as a son, is my failure as a father" always hit hard for me. Even after Commudus lists off his own virtues, trying to prove himself, his father doesn't accept. Marcus doesn't even notice that Commodus is begging for acceptance. He just goes straight to pointing out his failure.

      Commodus would have probably done what he did no matter what Marcus said or did - and no matter how perfect a father he was prior to this. Commodus wanted power, and he was ruthless about it. When Commodus heard that he wouldn't be Emperor, he immediately crossed the Rubicon and declared war, and his goal was to capture the crown. Mistake of Marcus was to not have higher security parameters. Marcus should have taken precautions to secure safe transfer of power to Maximus.

    "Your faults as a son is my failure as a father."
    I used to think that but as I grew older I realized that some people are just rotten in their core and there's nothing anybody could've done to change that despite their best efforts.

    • @Elly3981
      @Elly3981 7 років тому +11

      I think so too. Commodus was also mentally ill and unstable which his father knew would make him an unfit ruler who would run Rome to the ground.

    • @mickeypopa
      @mickeypopa 7 років тому +15

      Marcus Aurelius, for all the wisdom he had, simply couldn't see the truth when it came to his son and made the ultimate mistake of letting his guard down when he was most vulnerable.
      I guess there's a lesson to be learned from this scene, for every person: there are times to let your guard down and there are times not to.
      If the Caesar listened to Commodus' words carefully, he should've taken note of his chief virtues - his own words should've been enough of a warning.

    Hm, basically telling his son "You're messed up because I messed up. No hard feelings, right?" wasn't exactly the wisest decision Marcus Aurelius could have made there.

    Question: was a part of this monologue by commodus’ character manufactured? Was he manipulating his father with guilt and sadness? I’m sure some of it was true...but his character is a sociopath, so how much of these lines of suffering were really about his feelings and not about gaining power?

      There's a deleted scene of him going to one of his Father's busts after Maximus reveals himself to be alive, he emotionally explodes and hacks it apart with his sword before putting his hand on the face of the bust and crying. So I think we can assume his sadness/anger over his Father was pretty real.

      Some people have a genetic predisposition towards fearless dominance that we see as early as 1 years old. And virtually all of them are male because the hormones are already factoring in. But from there it's about getting them to act pro social with that predisposition (a cop or military man) rather than anti social (a criminal). Most of that boils down to nurturing. I think Commodus was a case of not being validated for who he was snowballing over years. You could argue it was largely circumstantial as his father was very busy ruling an empire, and had high standards of excellence as a result. On top of that Commodus was still spoiled and entitled in some ways while neglected in others. Which can create an even bigger monster.

    The dialogue reminded me of a dialogue between Humphrey Bogart and Paul Henreid in the following movie. Paul told Humphrey something like Have you ever tried to escape your own prison? and you never succeed.Laszlo: You know how you sound, Mr. Blaine? Like a man who's trying to convince himself of something he doesn't believe in his heart. Each of us has a destiny - for good or for evil.Rick: Don't you sometimes wonder if it's worth all this? I mean what you're fighting for.
    Laszlo: You might as well question why we breathe. If we stop breathing, we'll die. If we stop fighting our enemies, the world will die.
    Rick: Well, what of it? It'll be out of its misery.
    Laszlo: You know how you sound, Mr. Blaine? Like a man who's trying to convince himself of something he doesn't believe in his heart. Each of us has a destiny - for good or for evil.
    Rick: I get the point.
    Laszlo: I wonder if you do. I wonder if you know that you're trying to escape from yourself, and that you'll never succeed.
    Rick: You seem to know all about my destiny.
    Laszlo: I know a good deal more about you than you suspect. I know, for instance, that you are in love with a woman. It is perhaps a strange circumstance that we both should be in love with the same woman. The first evening I came into this cafe, I knew there was something between you and Ilsa. Since no one is to blame, I, I demand no explanation. I ask only one thing. You won't give me the letters of transit. All right. But I want my wife to be safe. I ask you as a favor to use the letters to take her away from Casablanca.
    Rick: You love her that much?
    Laszlo: Apparently, you think of me only as a leader of a Cause. Well, I am also a human being. Yes, I love her that much.Ref.: Casablanca (film) Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's unproduced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's. Caesar was not prudent, when Maximus won the war he favored Maximus in front of the army, Comodus noticed that Maximus was dear to Caesar... he got jealous, yet knowing that he is not "a moral man" he calls him in private to tell him he will not inherit the throne?!! Caesar could have body guards around him...the first time I watched the movie I knew that guy would slain his father when he was given the "bad news" because he was already obssessed with power when he was on his way with his sister... I would keep it strictly to Maximus, set up the army and announce him in public and surround him with body guards and keep an eye on Comodus 24/24 one mistake isolate him in jail for the glory of the Empire...

      Sometimes it pays a lot to accept an opportunity before you think for it overnight. You see Maximus should have accepted it immediately from Caesar. You see that stupid decision when he said he needs to think overnight had cost his wife and son's life. I pitied Maximus. Hes a good general but outwited by
      a battle-inexperience- man. Thats why its good to settle a deal before it flies. Opportunity is gone! Its true when he said, What we do in life, it goes in eternity! That same fuckin word slaps him by the fact of what he did. He did not see and grab the ooportunity to become emperor and that goes to eternity.
