    Excellent video and very helpful. I have watched it several times to remind myself of the details. My little Corgi does very well in a loose leash heel, right up until distractions overcome him. He is gaining experience there and I am thinking, with perseverance and exposure in different situations, we will get this. I have also wanted to train him to be calm on a longer leash for the "with me" situations where he is allowed to wander and sniff but within designated parameters; i.e., not to lean or pull on the leash. This is a harder concept for him and the world is full of many distractions that overcome his better judgment. I am thinking I have skipped too many steps to start the "with me" scenario and need to back up and solidify the loose leash heel where he is confident, calm, cool and collected, before going further. Would that be correct? Or can I teach these two concepts at the same time?

      Thanks, and I'm happy this video has been helpful. I recommend perfecting leash pressure in multiple environments, starting with minimal distractions and adding more as your dog gets better. Then, start using that for your "with me" command. Follow the same process, perfect it in an easy environment with minimal distractions, then make the environments gradually more difficult by increasing the level and amount of distractions.
      I hope this proves helpful, and thank you for your continued support.

    Hi, how is that loose leash and not just heel? I mean, if I want my dog to heel I want him to be at my side and focus on that, but while just on loose leash I want him not to pull, but at the same time sniff and gather information around, not only be focused on me. How do you teach to other one, so the dog knows he can sniff and mind his own buisness but yet keep the leash loose?

    I've commented under lots of videos without ever getting a solution, guess I'll give it another try down here: my lab ignores every kind of correction unless it's an extreme one. I can get a stranger's dog that pulls like crazy, have it walk as slow as I want by literally doing nothing and have him acknoledge and pay attention to me but with my dog oh boy... he's almost 3 years old, he's extremely friendly unless there's a very old female(don't know why some of them kinda scare him) or one of those males that's never gotten put in its place and tend to act like a bully/male puppy that plays too rough, in which case he does growl but never goes beyond that.
    Most of the times he's total velcro but when we go for a walk he barely looks at me unless I'm correcting him (and it lasts for half a second before he turns forward again), if he sees a dog he wants to get close to he just stops, goes tunnel vision mode and unless the dogs walks away there's nothing that breaks the looking. I don't wanna resort to pulling even harder but at this point I don't really know what else would work.
    He's extremely food driven I'm not gonna go out every day with food in my pocket, as I want him to pay attention to me and not the food in my hand.
    I just don't understand how can he stick so close to me when we're at home or even at the dog park, where he tends to come play with other dogs in between my legs but if we're on a walk it's like I'm not even there, all he cares about is sniffing around.
    I gotta say it really pisses me off since it's almost 2 years and a half I've been working on this behaviour and I'm starting to think any kind of dog work will happen with the one that'll come after him.

    Hey Nate, Love your videos! They have helped me so much with my puppy. He is the best, 5 months old longhaired GSD male (Thor) and already knows sit, down, shake, pretty, place, crate, get off (the couch), leave it, get it, and spin on the verbal and does them consistently, he also automatically either goes into his crate or "place" when I am working in the kitchen and patiently waits for the release command before he starts to eat. The automatic stay is a lifesaver! We are well on our way to threshold training however that gets unreliable when he gets too excited so more repetition is needed. He is also a good walker, he knows the principles of leash pressure so he will not pull much at all. I can't say he does a perfect heel but it's a work in progress.
    I do have a question about how long I can expect him to realistically hold a position. I always try to release him before he breaks the position himself however I am not perfect. He always gets corrected with a "no" and I send him back to the original position. He is also a bit reactive to the car sounds when it drives backwards and our doorbell. Do you have any advice on that?
    Thank you so much for all your helpful videos!

    Such a good video, very clear instruction on how to train heel. Will do this with my GSD to get her to loose leash walk.
    Question: is there a minimum age at which point dogs can be effectively trained? Additionally, is there a "sweet spot" or a "too late" age when dogs aren't as receptive to training? My GSD is 14 weeks.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks!
      I'll start training a puppy as early as eight weeks of age. The sweet spot would be the first 16 weeks of a dog's life since that's the imprinting period. It's usually never too late to train a dog unless they are too old to move comfortably, and physical conditions limit their mobility.
      Cheers!

    What's the difference between how a "wrong" and a "no" function?

    • @spencerpalanuk1570
      @spencerpalanuk1570 7 місяців тому +1

      I believe the wrong is used in a way to teach the dog what you want. The no is used when the dog knows the behavior.
      Wrong - redirect and reset to the correct way.
      No - that's a bad choice followed by correction

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  Рік тому

      That's very normal in the beginning with many dogs. I would either continue to reinforce with the leash pressure until the dog is proficient enough to add corrections, or you can also decrease the excitement a little in your voice when praising. :)

    Can anyone educate me what if my dog doesn't care much about verbal praise as a reward or even treats be it freeze dried meat, or even cheese, but rather pay his attention to pee mail, tracking all the scents around him left and right, what should I do? I live in a small apartment so it's unavoidable to bring him down for walks and potty, and it's unavoidable but to be surrouded by all the doggy mails. He is a fifteen month old Iris cream retriever and he has always been a front walker, not like the dog in this video that walks much much better than mine. Anyone has any good tips or advuce?

    • @TheCreepyKitten
      @TheCreepyKitten 2 роки тому +2

      Hey Panther, I can tell you what I did which is based on a lot of Nate's video's. First start by teaching him the "watch me" or "Look at me" command at home, once he can dot it well without distractions add some small distractions like food or toys, build up to the pee mail. I do think Nate has some videos on training the "watch me".
      As for the pulling what I did is similar to what is done in this video, it will take a lot a patience in the beginning but be consistent. When he pulls to a position that you do not want him in, just stand still until he looks back at you, after that pull him into your desired position like Nate does here. Lots of praise when he is not pulling.
      Also try more high value treats. When I am teaching my dog something new or hard I use either chicken or tuna (make sure there is no salt).
      I have to admit that on bad days my walks take double the time because I have to stand still too much, that usually means that I just waited too long to take him on a walk. Don't get discouraged and don't give up!
      Also use his meals when you go on a walk, instead of giving him breakfast dump the kibble into a treat pack and use that, he will work harder for his food if he is hungry.
      Hope it helps!
