    Great video.
    In the mid to late 80's Orbost and Bombala were to be connected for the highspeed train services, as it was the preferred route as most of the rail infrastructure was already in place, and would require minimum impact on the environment and routing excavation, as the high speed line was meant to go through Canberra as well. The contracts for the construction was cancelled in 1989 thanks to environmentalists at the time.

    A few good years ago, when there was much chatter about a fast train along the East
    coast , including Melbourne, some enterprising real estate type was suggesting to buy some blocks in Delegate, as the line was going to go through the town.
    I suspect the blocks are still available.

    Nice video, few dodgy pronounciations such as Nowa Nowa being Now-a Now-a and Metung being Mee-tung but apart from that its a good watch, one thing which you didn't mention was that in 1980 a bushfire destroyed several trestles along the line and the govt looked to close it, however the locals "kidnapped" a locomotive (making it inaccessible to the VR) so the government repaired the line and it continued for another 7 years!

    Myself and about 14 other blokes did that line on ganger's trollies back in April 1993 on the Easter weekend about 2 years before they lifted it. V/Line found about it out too and then they sent our group an extremely threatening letter and told us that if we ever did it again they were going to prosecute us. Oh also, yes, we even did the floodplain bridge too...

      Fantastic...you should convert a trolley to 3 foot six inch and explore the Tasmanian North East line from Coldwater Creek to Scottsdale...soon.

      Yeh trollies aren't hard to build Ralph @rsinclair6560... 😉 I'm a Boilermaker these days and I used to build locomotive underframes and bogies as an apprentice in the mid-late 90s and as a tradesman in the 2000s...

      I could do the Maryborough end of the old Castlemaine-Maryborough line Ralph@rsinclair6560 . Nearly half of that line remains in the ground...

    The line may have closed in 1987 however there were still wagons at Bruthen until at least the early 1990's as I remember seeing them there on my trips through the town. They must have been collected by a special train or cut up for scrap on the spot.

      Also remains of wagon axles lying in the swamp below Stoney Creek. Also hidden is Cossacks weir hidden and overgrown was water for steam locomotive in the Colquhoun Forest.

    A lot of misinformation in this video, but some good facts as well - you just need to know which is which. Reason for demise was more because of poor maintenance of trestles.

    I was waiting for this video. How interesting that there were thoughts of connecting the line at Bombala. The question that begs to be asked is why didn't the Australian states adopt rail buses like Germany? A light weight quick form of transport that could tow a parcel van behind it?

    • @sergeant5848
      @sergeant5848 Рік тому

      Because there's more money in road transport, and those that control the construction own the road transport companies.

      Opened in 1882, Korong Vale is the Junction for the Kulwin and Robinvale lines, it closed to passengers in 1978. It now sees goods trains once a week. (I could go more into detail but I won't:) )

    I Know this area well and am very familiar with the Bairnsdale to Orbost line rail trail I HAVE YET TO SEE A CYCLIST OR WALKERS USING IT the closest I have seen was a lone horse back rider at Nicholson

      I wonder why it doesn't get used....

    • @rsinclair6560
      @rsinclair6560 3 місяці тому

      It does get used but use diminishes the further out from Bainsdale. Daily used out to Swan Reach, Nicholson . Those brave bike tourist riding the Princes Highwsy often are unaware of the RT to Orbost. However the committee has been collecting data and received grants for work after the buh fires. The railway closed way before the RT was established and was returning to bush in some place. I took Henry Hooton ex VR driver on the line in a car to Newmerella.
