I wish these lines were still in service, it would make transport around the towns and regions so much better. Its sad to see how little is left of the lines today, And with our growing population it would be fantastic to travel on.
Yes but it is still fun to explore the abandoned lines from time to time

Very interesting video. As a resident of Bentleigh East I'd say history had vindicated the eponymous Minister's choice of a route to Cheltenham. I can still remember the grain trains going to Kooloonong; the line originally went a few kilometres further north to Koorkab and Yungera, stopping just south of the Murray River at Boundary Bend. My grandmother would have ridden the line to her job as a schoolteacher where she met my soldier settler grandfather in the 1930's.
Great work! Sale was also a port town, the canal lead to the river and via the lakes to the sea and was the goods hub of the area.
As a retired driver who has worked extensively around the former VR, I found this presentation very professional ande informative. It was interesting to learn about present day travel times to some of the remote locations. Just as a matter of interest, the worst town I ever lived in was Ultima, while the worst location I ever worked at due to poor rosters was Sea Lake. The best place I was sent, that I liked was Swan Hill as a Fireman and Hoptoun as a Driver.

You also forgot Mark Twain's infamous comment about Maryborough, in that it "was a Railway Station with a town attached to it".
You might think that’s what he said but that’s actually a myth, not sure how it came to be but in his book it’s not mentioned

I studies the development of Melbourne and its railways more than 40 years ago. The Outer Circle was built because the state government owned Spencer Street (now Southern Cross) station but not Flinders Street. The Outer Circle was so that state government owned trains from Gippsland could get to Spencer Street. Part way through the construction of the OC or just after it opened, the government purchased the other rail company and that meant Gippsland trains could run through Flinders Street to Spencer Street and made the Outer Circle of very little value.
Also, Tommie Bent had little to do with the Frankston line. He lived in Brighton and it was the Sandringham Line, through Brighton, that he decided on and benefited from.
Thomas Bent also developed the suburb of Bentleigh located on the Frankston line which he named after himself
As depressing as our decapitated railway network is, it is understandable why, what with the population density being weighted so heavily around Melbourne. I grew up with Puffing Billy in my backyard so I was pretty lucky comparatively, ha!

No other city on earth has a brilliant extensive metro train network like Melbourne's which reaches out to almost every suburb.
We also have the best regional train network as well.
Best regional train network in the world? Best metro network? I think you missed the part where most of these lines were ripped out and the state switched to the plague of car-centricism and started building to places without building public transport first.

Melbourne does have the oldest, largest and busiest metro train network south of the equator.
Always been this way since 1854.
20 lines, the two busiest lines and the busiest station.

No other city in the SH is larger with metro or regional.
Not Johannesburg, Cape Town, Auckland, nothing in Australia, Not Beinos Aires or Santiago or Sao Paulo.

If you want to complain because you're not getting to work on time because your train is late that's because as I said Melbourne has the southern hemisphere's oldest, largest and busiest metro train network. What would you expect?
Come over to Adelaide and see how reliable Adelaide's buses and trains are.......

Also, because the world's population is predominately in the northern hemisphere it doesn't exactly have much competition. Melbourne's train network is impressive even with the massive cuts, but don't get ahead of yourself.

It may not be the biggest or the busiest but it reaches out to almost every area of metro melbourne.
Have a look at every other major city in the world and name one which has a metro passenger train network which branches out to every part of it????

7:00 Serviceton Station, over near the Victoria/South Australia border, is known to be haunted and was recently covered by the *Amy's Crypt* UA-cam channel.
Yes, I read about it.
I've stopped there a couple of times and got out of my car and walked up to the station buildings.
Being full celtic and experienced spirits from the age of 5 I picked up a fair amount of negative energy on the western side of the building.
Wolseley is another station worth checking out.

I've noticed some people here are whingers.
I live in Adelaide, moving home to Melb soon if I can find a rental property.
Let me say this, anyone complaining about Melb trains needs to go to other cities like adelaide to put things into perspective.
Buses here are extremely unreliable.
Diesel passenger trains here breakdown regularly and are painfully slow.
I have ridden Melb Metro trains and V/line velocities when I've been back in Melb and I found them enjoyable and you can get to almost all parts of Melb via train.
Very very few of the worlds cities have train networks which reach out so extensively as Melbourne's does.
I'm fiercely proud of Victoria, my homeland.
It leaves the rest of Australia for dead.
Please stop or whinging.
If you don't love Victoria or Melbourne then get the hell out.

Interesting how you describe the Outer Circle line as being self serving to politicians. SUBURBAN RAIL LOOP? If it was about need they would build the leg to the airport first, but those electorates always vote Labor.
