Victorian Transport History
Australia
Приєднався 21 бер 2023
A guy who likes all things (Victorian) transport related.
I make usually short documentaries about the Victorian Rail Network (might make some non rail content soon). I have two on going series', V.r In Steam (Basically just history on Victoria's Steam Locomotives), and Victoria's Forgotten Rail Lines (As the name suggests, a series where I talk about Victoria's closed Branch Lines). I do occasionally sprinkle in videos about odd topics about Victoria's railways.
I used to film on an Olympus Om-d E-m5 Mark 2, then it shattered into 4 pieces.
Now I film in an Olympus Om-d E-m10 Mark 2
I upload every, usually every week but school exists so :/

History on the V.r J Class (V.r in Steam)
Near the end is a scene with a title 'A line to Cudgewa". That line has some great scenery from Wodonga into the Victorian Alps. Pity it had to go. Would have been a great tourist railway.
When I was a kid I vividly remeber a working steam goods train pass.it had a horses skull attached to the front of the engine.I also remember the blue rail motors pass as well as various diesel goods.this was in the sixties.
1:10 Scheduled passenger services didn't cease anywhere near as late as 1978. As a schoolkid, I had copies of the "Train Times" timetable book in my possession from the mid-1960s, and there were no passenger services to Bright even then.
I enjoy your videos. One improvement would be a little better research on how to pronounce town names. One example in this particular video is "Maldon". The first syllable is NOT pronounced as the first syllable in "malcontent", but as the first syllable in "molten". Lots of people would be pleased to help with this detail.
Very good, thanks for posting.
Early 1800s! Possibly you meant early 1900s.
Haha yep, early 1900s or late 1800s
You are just getting better in each video, well done! Excellent script and narration. Without this video, would never have known the line existed.
A lot of good work put in, but a couple of constructive criticisms. Slow down your narration by 50% - there's no need to rush. Give more time to the photos - I had to pause quite a few time just to take in what was in the photo. One was literally only on for one second!
great video but it zed l not zzzzl we are not in America cheers
There was another D class number 92 that worked on the tramway and was unfortunately scrapped in 1952 like most the other locomotives. I found this information in the description of a Trainz model so I’m not sure if it is true or not
i was at Kerang last week.
Have you ever wondered why the trucks are still at Koondrook I was driving a a train from Swan Hill To Bendigo and thay asked me at Kerang to go out there light engine and pick them up I refused to do it as the last 2 times engines were sent out there spent 6 hours in the dirt waiting for the brake down crew to come from Bendigo to put them back on the line this was in March 1982 So anytime I go past or hear about the trucks being out there I smile with pride
good show. does the katamatite tramway that you mentioned rate for a video?
@@vsvnrg3263 Perhaps :)
@@VictorianTransportHistory , i read the wikipedia page. so probably not.
The Anchen book on the Cudgewa line is mostly pictorial, but another title on the subject that has more information is the 102 page book "The branch line" by Lloyd Holmes.
@@Dave_Sisson I have also been trying to track that one down as well
@@VictorianTransportHistory If you can make it into the city, both should be available inside the state library, but check their on line catalogue first. I take a small pocket scanner so I can copy photos in their books for my own projects.
You know what was a coincidence. Both Victorian Transport History and I had been working on our separate Koondrook videos at the same time lmao. However mine has a few things left out but still was a pretty funny coincidence.
D. Munro & Co actually constructed 25 E class steam locomotives for VR between 1892-1894. 3 of these are preserved.
Great video, beautifully narrated!
Im loving these videos mate. Im looking forward to more of them. Can do one on the old Carpolac and Balmoral lines please? 😊

Another great video mate, this is an awesome series. Keep up the fantastic work!
Interesting history but you have got to get your pronunciation correct. however keep up the great work.
A very informative doco. Thanks for your research. A nice surprise to see one of my photos. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Michael Sainsbery.
I can't believe the truck driver walked.
My first 'ever' Job was at Jolimont Workshops, at age 15, in 1966. I started as a Lad Trainee, just a GOFA. get this, bring that carry that, and so on, with the Car builders. Later, I worked in the Advertising department, putting the adds in suburban trains and so on.
In a time when anywhere with at all decent access to jobs is needed for houses due to the housing crisis, resumption of revenue services to Yarra Glen or Healesville would necessarily mean the urbanisation of the Yarra Valley to justify the investment. I think the loss of the Yarra Valley would out-way the positives of the train, so this is the rare case where I wouldn't support a rail service.
Thanks for sharing your very interesting and informative video presentation.
Well put together, brings back some memories. I see you also added some footage of Victoria’s version of a high speed service starting at 1:24. The XPT is an embarrassment to what we once had!
I like your videos and btw I now have 80 subscribers :3
Love your videos, however the Intercapital Daylight Express wasn't known as such till 1962, when on broad gauge was simply known as the Daylight Express using a mix of S and Z rolling stock, when the SG was opened, it exclusively used NSWGR rolling stock. The first SG Spirit to Albury was hauled by S313 now In the loving care of steamrail.
Love to see R766 visit Victoria, hoping to get to Maitland next year for the Steamfest.
Unfortunately, I met Nicholas Archer the on the 19th of September 2015, and Newport Workshops, after the second Hitachi transferred from Macaulay. Four months before he got caught in January 2016. He hated my guts so bad, because i called him out for pulling the tarp off K183 and attempting to steal parts off it. I remember when he told a friend of mine in November that same year, that he was driving around Hurstbridge at the same time when 927M was driven out of the yard and smashed into the fence from the sidings. Several people got very suspicious about him and his strange behaviour around the yard. I remember seeing him roaming around East Block and down by the turntable. There were times we'd argue and when I heard to news about his attacks, me and other volunteers were shocked.
4:02 the infamous Edward VIII, duh because Prince Charles wasn’t even born yet nor was he a “Prince” yet

Some extra info on A2 996, and A2 964 which was cut for time A2 964: A2 964 was built at Newport Workshops and entered service in 1921, as a member of the 10th batch of Walcheart engines. It was built superheated, and was converted to oil firing in July 1946. It was taken off register in January 1964, and was placed in storage at Newport Workshops for a few years until 1969. When it was transferred to Edwards Lake Park via low loader from Reservoir Station. It's still there today, although you can no longer enter the cab and it has seen far better days. I remember playing on it when I was younger, and it might have been one of the reasons I have an interest in railways. A2 996: A2 996 was built at Newport Workshops and entered service in 1916 as a member of the 9th batch of Walchearts Engines. It was superheated in 1918 and was oil fired in June 1946. It had pretty much the same career as all the other A2’s and by the 60s it was also designated for goods and Passenger trains around the Geelong and Ballarat area, which is where most of the A2's worked in their twilight years. However it was one of the A2’s which hauled the very last broad gauge spirit of Progress. It was placed off register in November 1963, and was sent over to Echuca wharf and plinthed at the Station display. It had company tho, in the form of Murray River paddle steamers that operate from this historic river port. It was actually occasionally steamed up, although never moved. During the late 1980's or early 1990's the boiler cladding was removed to limit the spread of decay. With the loco repainted in a bright red primer layer but no outer coat. In 2002 West Coast Rail planned to restore the engine to Main line service. 7 June 2004 it was towed by Y112 of all engines over the newly re-laid wharf branch and stored at the old Echuca loco depot. With its next destination the WCR workshops in Ballarat East. Unfortunately these plans fell through and it was stored at Echuca Loco depot in this siding for over a decade. However it was saved from the siding on the 24th of December 2015, when the loco was road hauled back to Echuca Wharf by the Shire of Campaspe, and it has since returned to static display with new boiler cladding and a fresh coat of paint.
:(
I love the A2’s they are one of my favourite steam engines and do you think that you could do a video about the narrow gauge Na class steam engines that would be awesome
minor correction, the driving wheels were 73" not 75". 5:10, i doesnt surprise me there was a list. dad drove and fired steam engines in the 40's and said every steam engine had its own distinct personality. when he retired he got a copper etching of an a2. they were highly regarded.
@@vsvnrg3263 Was it a paper list? Or where the notes marked on the engines somewhere
A2 996 has been moved to the Port of Echuca and looks MUCH better than the photo provided. I should know, I saw it being moved (on a truck) and still see it once a week as I live in Echuca
@@lauriewhite8153 I have written about A2996, although it was cut for time. I'll post them in the comment section in a bit
@@VictorianTransportHistory A2 996 has SOOOO much history, I was surprised you didn't include it. It was moved back and fourth between the wharf, was in steam stationary for a few years, and almost restored.

Here’s an interesting fact about the A2s: In the 1950s, VR was looking to give their E, Y, D1/D2, and D3 classes automatic couplers and were about to scrap some A2s at the same time. This led to an idea where headstocks containing the desired automatic couplers from the A2s could be reused for the older locomotives mentioned above. The E, Y, D1 D2 and D3 locomotives eventually received these hand-me-down headstocks with their automated couplers which gave the appearance of them being wider than the actual engine they were assembled to. Unfortunately, most of the engines fitted with these didn’t last long in service post rebuilding, however many others did.
Well done mate another great video
Great video, highly enjoyed it
