- In this video French drain tips we take a look at a lawn that has major surface water drainage issues. These drainage issues are created by storm water runoff creating soil erosion and flooding problems for the home owner. The drainage issues are so bad, that one portion of the lawn could actually collapse due to erosion.
In order to correct these issues it will require using 6" pvc pipe for the collection and discharge lines of the drainage system. will be installed along the west side of property. The use of large catch basins, 24 inch, (the largest NDS makes) will also be used for the drainage system.

WWOW! This is very similar to what is happening to me...my back yard is a hillside, I have a wall like that. Municipality closed the road behind my back yard in 2016 and completely abandoned it without considering how the deterioration of the road and associated catch basins will affect the residents down here. As the surface deteriorated, rain water created channels that directed water down my back yard, destroyed my shed, sunk this area below and eventually 3 homes on the other side often road above me collapsed. The homes up there have sinkholes in a linear pattern that go from their home toward the road that looks like the hole you shown. No one knows where the water from the holes go. I believe it is beneath the road and under my yard. The topography in the entire area changes constantly because of this. The road does not look like it was ever a road. It was reclaimed by nature and looks like it was devastated in an eartjquake. It is eventually going to fall into my yard entirely.
They still have not fixed anything. We have been telling them about how it’s destroying my yard since 2018. Since, 3 families across the street on the upper side of that road lost their homes. Eventually my retaining wall is going to fall, and the foundation is going to fail. I al next in line to lose my home.

Cut in a swale, add a culvert at the end with a finished concrete mouth to prevent that erosion. Catch basin/French drain along the retaining wall. Problem solved!
Dylan Hausinger pretty close to what I ended up doing. No concrete mouth. Did a dry creek bed. Did the French drain on high side of retainer wall - higher up on hill side with shallow swale / French drain beneath. Which discharged into dry creek bed. Did catch basins over by the side fence and manhole area. All downspouts tied in.
Your idea would work just as well. I find it interesting, in drainage, how different individuals will correct an issue. So many ways to look at it - and so many different solutions are presented by each individual.

I have no idea what the problem is? You show it during heavy rain, how long after the rain stops does the water go away? Does it sit in that swale? It seems to me the water running along the back of the yard is doing great, running away from the house to the drain. Erosion? How? The water is running over grass, that's great! You don't show the roof or where the roof water goes. I barely saw 1 downspout dumping on to a patio, how is the patio pitched?
You might need solid pipes to get roof water away from the house to that drain basin. Where does the water go that was caught by the basin? Did you get the job? Please provide a link.
The depression and cavities are being created by the decomposing root system of the tree-put in a pond there! A dry riprap stream going into it, and one going out of it when it floods. Plant a rain garden in depressions too. Wicked mystery with the hole!
While i dont have the hole in the gound, as far as water goes. This aint got nothing on my runoff issues
Sounds like a sink hole forming under that stump. Quite a bit of runoff there. Waterfall over the patio. A river to the stump. He's going to loose some lawn to the river. You'll fix him up before that happens. Bellis Lawn & Gardens to the rescue! Waiting until fall might make the difference between saving the lawn & replacing it. That is what ended up happening when we went to correct it. Doesn’t show so much how the issue was corrected, but more of what we ran into during the installation. Pretty interesting stuff!
Back off 40 feet shoot a trench at 9.00 o'clock to the left directly to the creek to control the main flow.
Paul Nicholson ended up doing something of the sort. Built a dry creek bed. Plus lots of surface drainage. I need to go back up there and show the final results. The client did send me a short video of it all working during a down pour, early last year.

That’s what was under his lawn and contributing to it sinking. Craziest thing I have ever seen.
B&B Drainage Solutions you did good by recording
We are buying a new house and we notice there is a rain water drainage for all the lots are laid such a way its going to runs over the lawn in the backyard. So the rain water from lot 1,2,3.... will flow all the way till lot 20. Is it an advisable to have such setup by the builders? We are in austin, tx
Vijayan kandasamy it was later discovered this home was in a drainage easement (back lot of property). Although not an ideal situation for a homeowner - they are necessary for proper drainage of an area. There are a lot of legal technicalities that come with a drainage easement being located on your property. You might be interested in learning if in fact your property is a drainage easement. The local city works would be able to answer this question for you. Do not rely on the builder to answer your questions for you.

@@Bellislawns Thanks for your suggestion. I am trying to follow up on this with city of Austin and if possible get a local drainage solutions experts opinion.

Side note: the builder might not have any other alternatives to drain the area. The proposed solution to drain all the water to one area could be the best alternative due to site conditions and local codes for that sub division. Site conditions play a big role when designing drainage systems and they often limit the best of designs.

Can surface water, even when like 7 feet away from the home's foundation, still make its way down to the basement?
Nolan Knows it would be unlikely. It’s when surface water flows towards the home ( due to poor grading) that it can create problems so far as water entry into the home, or foundation issues.

@@Bellislawns . Erosion control you can line ditches with it etc. Its an awesome thing. It was invented overseas not sure where but they make small buildings out of it and tarmacs as well
Michael Hampton yes. I’m familiar with the product. Comes in various composites. Some are bio-degradable.
But it turned out this lawn had many issues no one was aware of. You can see that in my other video “why your lawn is sinking”

Starlight GT yes. Year later system tested by Mother Nature with a 4” rain in less than 10-12 hrs and it worked as designed 👍
