This was indeed an amazing scene -- one that brought a huge part of Tolkien's mythology into play. The great, amazing Galadriel, older than the sun, moon, and stars, facing an ancient adversary. Blanchett owned this role. Personally, I would have liked to see a Galadriel who appeared as a stunning "power" of purity and Light, rather than dark/drowned "witchy," but I understand why PJ took this approach, and it is potent. We're blessed to have all these films, even w/ their necessary imperfections. Namarie~~
+Jonathan Kieran I agree. They had make Galadriel similar to the Grudge or some water Hag. Sauron hated and feared her because of the light she had. They should have made her like a beam of light, similar to the two Valinor Trees.
+Opal O Yes she incarnate the light of Varda. Melkior was afraid by the light of Varda... i don't like this representation of Galadriel. It's a big, big, big mistake..
Interesting, because it never happened. Galadriel was purity incarnate, she displayed power but never turned into the kid from 'The Ring'. It's completely inaccurate to the character.
This is one of the few things Peter Jackson does that's either an improvement or fulfillment of what Tolkien meant from the books. In the books, this scene happens offscreen and Gandalf is pretty vague when he describes it to Frodo much later. I think somehow Peter Jackson managed to figure out what Tolkien wanted but never actually described explicitly. It is possibly the best scene in ALL of Jacksons movies
Although some say it didn't happen in the book, it's still one great example of a n adaptation that improved upon what was written. Can't help but think the same for the White Witch's scene at the Aslan's Table in Prince Caspian film
Am I the only one who thinks that this behind-the-scene take is so infinitely better than the final version? In the final version, Galadriel looks like a weird humanoid nuclear generator and the over-the-top CGI and sound effects end up drowning out the subtlety and nuance of Blanchett's performance. In this raw take, you can see the intricate details on her dress, study the way she moves her face and body and hear her haunting voice modulation. In the final version, you feel like you are just watching a cut-scene out of an expensive video game. Yet another example of Jackson forgetting that less being more.
I think if they kept this scene the way it is in this video, it would come off as a beaten old lady's last feeble attempt to save her friends. She looks like shes dying here. I agree with one part, the finished product looked too CG, I know the idea was a drowned look but it really just looked like she just stepped out of the shower fully clothed. I liked the enhanced version of her voice better than this but I would have rather heard her voice from LOTR when she was offered the one ring. i really liked this whole scene though. Her entering this place to finding gandalf was amazing, so was the fight and banishing scene.
How can you say that about Peter? Did you forget what he did with LOTR? You should know by now that the reason the hobbit turned out the way it did wasn’t Peters fault
I was shocked first time I saw the scene as she basically looks like the girl from the ring and I found it poor. The watery withy thing in a dark sense could be done in a more elvish way as well. However the sequence is still amazing. I feel you and share your opinion :)
Before Hobbit films were made and inspired by Galadriel's dark form, it was used in various games as her War-Aspect. This is seen in Battle for Middle-Earth 2 and the LotR tabletop game.
Its not the light of elendil he was the numenorian king that light she had was the star if eàrendil he was the father of Elros and elrond the light in Phial was the light form the 2 trees telperion and laurelin which were stored in the sillmaril of feanor
Why does Peter Jackson insist on portraying Gandalf as a total pussy? This scene could have shown Gandalf in a much better light. How about the extended scene in Return of the King? When Gandalf faces off with the King Ringwraith? Where Tolkien wrote the wizard as a powerful spirit, holding off the Nazgul Lord at the gates of Gondor, instead Jackson has him fall to the ground with his staff broken ... WTF? Gandalf deserves better.
I totally agree regarding that RotK extended scene, but perhaps they wanted to give the viewers a sense of defeat since we all knew the good guys would win in the end anyway?
Perhaps. I understand that movies must be different than the books. Notice how Peter Jackson had 1 troll in Fellowship, 2 trolls in Towers, and 3 trolls in Return? I honestly believe THAT was his motivation for changing the scene for the "Gates of Gondor" - he didn't even include Gandalf's stand in the original movie! I'm not a literary purist, but that scene (in the book) was my absolute favorite. That is my only real problem with Peter Jackson's treatment of LotR - everything else he did (including the changes) were wonderful. All in all, I'm thrilled with his treatment of one of my favorite books.
Not sure where they got this interpretation from, since this never happened. Galadriel was purity incarnate, she displayed power but never turned into the kid from 'The Ring'. It's completely inaccurate to the character.
It was a good scene. But I also believe it was a massive mistake. As they stated it shows galadriel going dark and using dark power. They took that from the scene in the LOTR where she speaks to Frodo. Which was showing her what she would look like if she excepted the one ring and became dark. So this was a very big mistake. And remember Tolkien did not write this scene it was created just for the movie. Still enjoyable to watch but a mistake nonetheless.
pendragonshall I don't see it as her using darkness to defeat him. She has the capacity to be a great good or great evil. In this scene I see her channelise all the light within her through her phial to banish him; as a consequence we witness what Galadirel could be without that light. I do think it would have been better to not have the sudden jump to her "dark look" but to see the grid all transition from light to dark as we see the light pass through the phial insets sift
Galadriel having a conversation with Elrond about spanking Sauron will forever be the greatest improvised blooper of all time.
more like the funniest when i heard
That speech brings CHILLS down my spine.. Cate is SO amazing, how she can switch into such a dark voice so easily.
Pheebs lmao. you obviously haven't met a voice actor.
Krazy Sickgestions- voice actors/actresses can be incredible. Especially in video games.
@@krazysickgestions8748 well, tbf, the voice modulating sfx definitely helped lmao
3:04 Hugo: "Nonetheless, he must be hunted down and ssspp... ughhh
Cate: "Spanked! " 😂😂😂

My God! Galadriel gave me shivers and goosebumps all over! Cate Blanchett really nailed it there.
I am very glad we got to see Galadriel at full power. Good stuff.

I love watching this BTS over and over again. Even without any SFX, Cate Blanchett just... SLAYS this scene. 😲😲😲😲😲
This simultaneously slayed and gave me life!
Galadriel is a great character, and a very pretty actress,This scene I really like,is one of the best 😊
Shame that Sauron is not only nameless, formless, and faceless; but he is also assless. At least they can spank his armour though...
She's born to be that role
Before Hobbit films were made and inspired by Galadriel's dark form, it was used in various games as her War-Aspect. This is seen in Battle for Middle-Earth 2 and the LotR tabletop game.

He preferred to leave than face this tremendous face! XD
That "Spanking" was an eminent threat.

She was affected by the dark power that was in the fortress so not really a mistake.
