I went to a community college and the professor had me teaching the class how to do some things because he doesn't understand digital production. That was a waste of my money. Learning at home is better.

I'm currently midway through taking a 2-year music production program in a college, and you could say that it's because I'm biased, but I'm loving every second of it.
I tried (not very hard, I admit) to study on my own. I got Ableton and watched some UA-cam tutorials, but I'm the kind of person who needs a solid knowledge ground to be spoon-fed with before I start studying and expanding upon it on my own. As someone who always had difficulties to get up and get shit done - it's good for me to have that envrionment that obligates me to practice that stuff through assignments and school projects. While trying on my own, I ended up making mediocre stuff, not even knowing if I'm doing any good and just kind of blindly going at it as long as I had the motivation to.
I don't believe it's what will make me great eventually, I know that if I relied on whatever knowledge I gain from this program to make a living as a producer, I'd be in for some bad times. But the level of understanding that I already have midway through helps me be MUCH more focused now when I learn new things through UA-cam tutorials.
Knowing the terminology, fundamentals of audio, understanding of music theory and all the solid groundwork that needs/should be done in order to become a good producer is pretty much taken care of for you.

Yes I’m the same way! I’ve been going back and forth on whether I should go to school for this for a bit now and I always got really discouraged when people would say it was ridiculous I couldn’t just learn on my own. But I know having that foundation and time with professors to explain things will help me. It’s not that I’m not passionate about music and forwarding my career, I just really struggle getting into something I have little to no understanding of

It's alot harder to network if you learn at home, and that's the crucial part of the music industry.
I have been a music producer since 2003 way before i went to university. I release lots of house music and have reached many personal goals musically and production wise, teaching myself. I finished a music production degree in 2012 and have just finished by record production masters degree. I dont need to go university to do music but i LOVE the subject. I love it so much that i wanna learn as much as i can. NO ONE CAN EVER KNOW EVERYTHING. Going to university has given me a different perspective on everything music AND i have something to show for my skills academically. IT DOES depend on your circumstances but IF you LOVE the subject then STUDY IT... its quite simple.
I'd jump in and say that going to University (yes, I'm British ;)) can be a good thing. ALL of the information is available for free online, true. You COULD learn all of this on your own, lots of people do, successfully.
I, however, wanted to go to University to do something, and saw no reason not to do BSc Audio Recording an Production. The key is making the most of the free studio time, great equipment, knowledgable tutors and contacts.
You absolutely have to go above and beyond the lectures to make it worth it, and have your own projects going on to make you stand out, but it gives you such a great understanding of the basics, and more advances things that you can specialise in.
It's totally subjective, but don't run out University/College.
The Audio Journey I agee with you. A big college near me has a multi million dollar music building and state of the art equipment. It costs a bit to go to the school, but it gets you to an expert level with their equipment

school isn't the only way to get connections. the internet is way bigger than you think use social media to it's highest potential. work on your gears buy a camera and lighting, go big on youtube. im lucky enough that i sing and produce so i gotta keep grinding.
school won't teach you creativity they'll teach you technical stuff and they won't have their attention to you that much if they have like 15 -25 students at once. it's the truth if you have the talent you dont need school as everything you need is already online.
and don't give up on your education. if u want to get a degree or trades school make time for your music like atleast 2 hours a day and grind on the weekends. 2 hours a day isnt much but you progress everyday isn't that lovely ? :)
I spent so much time worrying if I should go to music school that I was too stressed to even make music, lol. Now i'm in school for something completely unrelated but also making the best music i've ever made.
What I've learnt so far is that you actually need to sit down and explore. There is no right or wrong way to explore. Just explore and go with what you like. Sounds that pleases your taste and how you would like to hear music. A lot of experience will come through exploring.
I feel that a career institute is better. The curriculum is focused just on music.
Not if you are going to end up with $200k+ in debt
Trapnest career institutes don’t even cost half that much the most expensive is la recording arts school and that’s 78-85k

I'm a self taught music producer. I learned everything about my DAW. I didn't rely on anyone. I learned everything through practicing and having an ear opened for sounds. Once I got this down everything else just fell into place. I learned all about it within two years of practicing. It was really the most difficult thing to learn ever. Once I learned it I thought wow that's all. I"m glad I didn't give up on trying. Before this I didn't have any musical background at all. I didn't even know how to play any instruments. I didn't know how I was going to learn anything about it, but I did.

Over in the uk we have some really good universities and colleges with a load of funding and real top qualtiy industry professionals who teach the course, places like coventry and hertforshire have seriously good courses and gear and the content and calibre of the teachers is top class, just my opinion though! :)
Why go to a college for music when you can go on UA-cam and learn a lot

schools like Berklee and USC Thornton's school of music are dope. the network is just fire but college isnt for anyone
I applied to Berklee and USC and I got into both but ended up going with Berklee and I'll be starting this January...I'm really scared though because I don't know what to expect and I don't to go through all that time and money to find out that it was all a waste. But I also don't want to give up the opportunity, Berklee has been my dream school for years and it was a big deal for me when I got accepted. So I don't know what to do... :/

With full sail you get a Bachelors degree in 2 years. its accelerated your still get a Bachelors degree, im taking online classes and I don't recommend it if your a hands on learner. They throw alot of reading and videos and depending on your instructor it will seem like your not getting enough help. Administration is wonderful!
My opinion, going to school production could be important is a few typicall reasons, going to school can give you the opportunity to be permanently active and motivated, having his schedule the deadlines, the terms, may give you less freedome consequently you will have to focus and work on your career at any time
My second opinion which is the one i'm 100% agree, going to school is not necessary to be creative, you can learn a bunch of things from many professional independant producers who work for their own youtube channels, that point is so great and amazing!
I feel like I'm learning a lot about production on my own, with tutorials like that of your channel and such. What I'm more wondering about is whether I should learn composition and theory from a college, that way I can really learn how to write music with emotion and really get across to listeners what I want them to hear. Is that worth it? Because I am slowly getting better at production myself, and as the years pass and I keep grinding, I'll get better at the technical things. So, would it be worth it to attend college for music composition in my case?

Davado David get any daw and start by trying to replicate beats watch youtube videos and learn how to use the daw, start today!
As said, watch beat, daw tutorials. Pick up an instrument to learn. Piano is the most universal and for beats themselves I'd say finger drumming.

Buy a DAW you like and go to youtube to learn how to use it. Make simple beats and learn to master. Try replicate musics you like. Most important thing is that you learn to create sounds. You could go with sylenth or serum or any other synth vst. Come to youtube everytime you can't figure out something. I've learned a lot from youtube than I could've on my own. Also explore as much because you will surely get experience from it. Good Luck with that.

I have a great ear for music and I have a friend trying to get his name out there (he wants to be a rapper aha). But I tell him all the time where music is going to be in a couple years. The rap that we know in this time is going to be dead in 2 years. I predicted the kind of funky jazzy rap that's starting to kick off. I know what sounds good and what sounds trash. And I know what sounds make people feel good and really groove. I just don't know how to make a career out of it.. I'm passionate about music and the way it changes people and moods and vibrations. And I want to be apart of that movement. I just feel like if I go to school, my judgement will change and if I don't go to school and become self-taught I won't do it right.

I did both and have to say that college did not teach me anything i did not already know and focused to much on the things that most individuals in my class did not sign up for, but for me personally the issues where mostly about mainstream context, i do now want to sign up to a class where they dont use a program that i want to learn,why? because i wont learn anything, sure i might know the basics of those programs now but i would never use them again, i love my cubase, i love normal pcs with windows and the atmosphere the college gave me would had only turned me into a zombie rather then someone with life. This is also in the UK and im not speaking for other countries

I am taking Electronics and Comm engineering now on my 3rd year but all my subjects are disorganized because of transferring from my past school( Mechatronics course) to another school( ECE). In my situation I have the opportunity to choose whether i want to shift course to Music production in another school AGAIN. Im not so sure right now because if i choose Music my college life will start from scratch.. instead i will not take it and finish my engineering degree. From the very start i was already choosing Music before college, but from all circumstances theres no opportunity and i didnt expect that i was going to take an engineering course, which i am not very very familiar with. I am having dilemma of whether i should pursue music or just finish my engineering degree

I know this video was 2 years ago and whatever, but I'm getting into music production now, because y'know why not start before i get out of grade-school, right? Anyways, I could learn by trial and error, reading books and such, just like you had said in the video, thing is I'm going to university ANYWAYS, and I'd also like to study music and such there, problem is... the University I'm going to be going to has 0 music courses, and my parents don't want me going to another school, saying I can start with this school THEN go to a music school. So I wanted to know what other types of courses I should/could take once I do go to university that could help in my music production career in the future, thanks!
do a semester before investing in a ton of gear. you will learn the fundamentals and have a community of artists around you everyday, inspiring you and pushing you to your limits. but choose your school carefully.
or, rather than spend money on a semester of school, buy gear instead? yeah. buy gear. don't go to school. buy gear. hang out with artists in your free time for inpiration. maybe a hit or two of acid. then if nothing goes your way, you have your gear to sell on ebay. cool!

Does getting a degree in music, music business, music industry, or anything similar give an edge over someone without a degree if they were to apply to work in a studio or a record company? Like will a studio or record company choose to hire someone with a degree over someone without one, or do they care more about skill and work ethic?
I meant to touch on this in the video! Good question. With music business, you would want a degree. Most companies like labels, publishers etc, will want you to have a degree to even be considered for a position.
It's a little bit different for recording studios. In my experience, the network at the college and being in college makes it easier to get an internship, but a recording studio won't care if you have a degree. Some might, but some just want you to be a cool person who can handle whatever the job throws their way.

I get what you mean about actually working for them, but what about people who pitch songs/beats to record companies, TV shows, movies, video games, etc for placement opportunities? In a scenario where two producers pitch beats for the same placement, both are equally as hot as the other, but one producer has a degree and the other does not, does the producer with the degree have a better chance at getting the placement?

Hey! I am 24, went to undergrad, and have a bachelors in math. I am just now realizing that producing is what I actually want to do. I am the type of person that would benefit 100x more in a school environment as opposed to trying to teach myself. My question is- should I get a masters, an associates, or a second bachelors? Getting two separate bachelors seems a little silly to me (and I don't want to take the gen-ed classes again), but am I missing out on core concepts if I go straight to a masters? Are masters in "music technology" too specialized?

hey, great video! I think i'm definitely more the type of person to do everything on my own and it is working very well so I'm not planning on going to music university. I'm currently studying electical engineering which i find very interesting but it does take up lots of my time. sometimes it makes me pretty upset because im so ambitious and i have so many ideas for music but not enough time. im very active and I use almost every minute i have in a day. it distracts me a lot from my studies too. what can I do while i'm not earning money from my music to have enough time for music. do you suggest trying a year without studying or should I keep living this compromise?
I agree with ESW 100%. I think its the environment, interaction and challenges presented that cause you to grow and learn. Not so much a structured environment such as a university.

I realize it's been almost a year, but hopefully my answer still helps. No, you don't especially if you are gonna produce electronic music or beats for hip hop. However, it will help you immensely learning at least to play the piano basically and some music theory. Cheers

Why can't you do both and capitalize on the fact that there are professors able to provide feedback on work you did out side of class.
To make awesome melody do we need to learn keyboard at college or an average knowledge of piano is enough ?

In my opinion, it depends on your style and what music you plan on making. For example, a lot of the melodies heard on hip hop radio stations aren't extremely complex. Many of them are simple and catchy. On the flip side, various forms of electronic music have many insane layers to them. No matter what, you're going to need to know at least basic music theory, but you can learn that stuff online or in a music book that costs maybe $20 or less. My point is, the amount of skill you need really depends on what direction you want to take your music in, but it is possible to teach yourself how to play without going to college as long as you have the drive and resources to do so.

Great video! I do believe you are not giving credit enough towards the fact that audio school 1.taught you that you are a learner from doing not class 2. Allowed you the time to develop the skills and confidence to be where you are

I've spent the last three years of my life in my room, screaming into my microphone, recording metal guitars, learning from tutorials, trying, failing, trying harder, succeeding and posting the abominations/successes onto my UA-cam channel. Now I'm going to the Art Institute of Dallas for a degree in audio production and I already feel like I'm going to pull my hair out just from physics because these assholes gave me the course online when I specifically asked for one on campus. I honestly feel like there isn't a damn thing they could teach me that I couldn't either figure out on my own by careful research or by stumbling into it by pure luck, but I have to go to school or else I'm gonna get kicked out of my mother's house. I want to make music for a living and yet I feel like there are so many factors that are working against me that keep me from doing that in the way that I feel the most comfortable. I wish there was just a clear cut solution or I wish life wasn't so damn complicated.
As someone that is surviving only with music (and some side hustle) I'd recommend not spending that money in school and instead use that money to support yourself while doing a part time job or a side hustle ( mine is buying and reselling phones from Ebay and teaching music to kids 1 day a week at a school ).
As you said, most stuff you can learn it on your own or pay a tutor that can give you some guidelines. Your most precious asset as a musician is time, and if you gotta spend it working some shitty job to make up for what you paid for your education, then you doing it wrong. I wish you the best of lucks.

Point Blank is excellent. If.... you wanna make music, cuz if you wanna be a dinosaur recording Rock using pro tools, look for a place where they worship neve consoles, there are many ¬schools¬ doing this gimmick around pieces of museum.
