I am ambidextrous and like to flip every few exchanges or so. People complain that it is confusing

I can easily see that it may feel confusing! That’s why you should keep doing it ahah

Good work! You have every right to use your talents to your best advantage. In the end, your entire club will be better for it.

As a left handed longsword fencer you're spot on. I know that the inside line is too deep to traditionally attack safely and will work your outside line and shallow targets to death.

Funnily enough, we have three lefties but only one of them plays full-on left-handed. The most experienced one has fenced right-handed from the beginning with all weapons, the newest one did several years of kenjutsu before joining us and because they don't allow left-handedness, fences "right-handed" with the longsword but seems to prefer left hand with the sidesword, and the third one who recently moved to town and has done HEMA for a couple of years beforehand only fences left-handed.

Argh, forcing lefties to go right handed is so bad, it’s so good being left handed in fencing generally speaking

Being left handed is a huge advantage. Right handed people are quite used to the idea that certain places are targets, while others are safe. Lefties flip that all on its head. You did a great job of showing how we target and how our attacks look and feel completely different from what you see from another right-handed opponent. Your whole right side is wide open to us.
I have seen a lot of "compensation" techniques over the years, from reversed stances and twisted torsos to off-line guards and some things I can't even describe. I have had opponents try switching to fighting left-handed, but I can't recommend it to other viewers of the channel unless you practice it frequently. The unfamiliarity will be more of a hindrance to the right-hander than to the left-hander, exponentially so as the lefty's skill level goes up and almost regardless of yours.
None of that matters though unless you *look* at your opponent and analyze them carefully. I can't count the bouts I have won that were followed (moments or even hours later) with the opponent saying something like "I thought something was strange, but I couldn't figure it out". Your best defense is vigilance.
Great topic, and well executed video!

Nice tips! We don't have a lefty in our club but I come across a lefty once in a while when I visit other clubs. Hard to get that consistent practice, though!

there are 3 lefties in my club, me being one of them. still practice mainly right side to get the hang of it, but also left side. sometimes if im struggling with something i switch to left so i can get the movement and then go back to right hand

Try to work more on your left, in a competitive environment at least it is extremely useful ;-)

Great video! I say that as a Lefty who has a channel specifically for left handed HEMA advice!

As a lefty, take this down!

i wonder how hard it is to learn both sides, so that you could just switch in a short fight break and surprise the enemy

Working on it. Definitely not impossible but if you do not dedicate full time to the off hand it takes quite a lot

Part of the answer will also be based in practicality. If you are a knight (as opposed to a dedicated fencing master who does it for a living), you have a lot of things to do that aren't just training, so your time is kinda limited. Learning to fight with your left hand is a good idea in general with every weapon that is used in one hand, because, well, your other hand may be occupied or broken once the stabbing starts - but for sword and shield or two handed weapons, there is often not much point, because you will either have both hands and be able to use your preferred way or be unable to use the weapon.
And then you get polearms, I switch the grip on spears pretty regularly depending on which flank I'm currently at (left hand forward for the right flank, to be able to stab around the outermost frontliner), so learning to fight both ways with polearms is essential. For something like a pollaxe, you could well argue that lefty and righty are the exact same because you switch sides in that combination so often anyway, and what hand you use the dagger with is dictated mainly by which hand managed to draw that dagger in a pinch (so, if you wear your dagger exclusively on the right hip, there is less use in learning to use it lefty style).
And that's not even going into really out there things you could try to pull of, like lefty mounted lance. The sheer time requirements are so big I suspect few people bothered to do it with weapons they could use well enough without it.

i'm a bit odd. with a one-handed sword, or shield combo, i'm right handed. but two-handed, i'm leftie.

6 out of our 20 people in our club are lefties
