You know, I think this small section where you play as Ashley really helps put into perspective the absolute shitshow nightmare she's in. I've heard people say that Ashley is annoying and doesn't do anything useful( At least in the original) but I think that's sorta the point. She's not some specially trained soldier like Leon or tough as nails girl like Claire who can adapt on the fly, she's just a young girl in a scary as hell situation and is just trying to do her best to make it out of it alive.
Exactly, personally, I never found her annoying, I figured out how to keep her safe and from being grabbed and kept adapting since I first played it. Whenever she was grabbed i understood her yelling Leon help, who wouldn't if they were in her situation? Not to mention it helps me find her on the fly
Have to say completely agree with this comment, also makes you care for her more this game. Her small dialogue moments remind me of Ellie from last of us.

I love this section. It really grounds you again to the reality of the situation, and how truly terrifying this would be to someone who is just a normal person, not used to this madness like Leon, Claire and the like. Plus by this point in the game you have killed so many monsters you become desensitized to it in a way, and i think this was a nice change of pace to bring everything back down.
I do appreciate the fact that she's not completely helpless against the enemies and can use the lantern to freeze them even if it's only for a few seconds. Or run away from them. If they made it where if the enemies spotted you the game was over that would have made this section so frustrating. I HATE HATE HATE insta fail stealth sections.
The Sherry part of re2remake was one of those insta fail stealth missions and boy I hated that shit. It was the worst part of a great game for me. Good thing I found the door to use the emblem before I f*cked up. You can advance with the game, but as you said, you can't get the chests after with Leon.
This is seriously the scariest section of the game. How do you make a game where you stab, shoot, kick, and suplex monsters scarier, switch you to a character who’s only defense is stunning enemies, has no health bar and therefore dies in one hit, and overall isn’t as capable as the player is used to. Ashley’s tons of fun to play as just because her sections so tense in such a different way that Leon and Ada’s are.
Would’ve been cool if in the beginning of the game, we got to play as Ashley trying to run away from Chief Méndez. Sort of like RE7’s kitchen demo in a way where it acts like a prelude to RE7. Ashley will of course be highly underpowered so you have to rely on stealth and wits to get by. At the end of the segment, she could be on the path leading away from the hunter’s lodge only to be recaptured and then the game starts from there.
