Dude, I can't believe you braved that to document this. I'm at 7298 and have witnessed you working on your place over the last 2 years. I was almost going to pop in on my way to the dump when I saw you working recently, to pay you a compliment. I'm sorry I didn't. I travel this road on many occasions & used to live off of BALD MOUNTAIN ROAD. I'd go over McKinney Gap and then go around the River to go home. I ALWAYS called the store Guy's Store & will miss it & the little Rock Building where people could get a hair cut across from Guys. At the time, I was just trying to keep a record of it for myself, never realizing how devastating it was going to become. It's been five-plus weeks now, and I still have no answers. It's no one's fault. The magnitude of this is like nothing I have ever seen. I'm alive. Amazing video. Your reaction at the end puts me in mind of the poem “If” by Kipling. Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build ’em up with wornout tools;
Retired geographer here: I am glad you crossed over to the other side when you did, and am sorry to see so much of your life's work destroyed. * We cannot take the 100- 200- 1000-year-flood designations seriously anymore, because these were derived from sedimentary sampling and represent info from an era with a cooler climate and minimal human land use interventions, such as deforestation, farming, drainage-ditch construction. * I have seen professionally copious convincing data that the atmosphere is warming due to the influx of CO2. As a consequence, much larger and more frequent storms and flooding are coming. It's inevitable, unfortunately. * Furthermore, that valley doesn't have a floodplain, which indicates that the river is still in a down-cutting phase. It is not a safe place for erecting river-side buildings, especially on the cut-bank side, where your house was. The outside curves are where erosion is always the worst. * I don't know about the geologic stability in that valley and how expensive it would be to build a stable, well anchored house foundation a little ways up the hillside, nor how much of a landslide risk you'd face on the uphill if you cut too deeply and try to level off a house site. * Before deciding whether to rebuild or not, I advise talking with impartial advisors on the advisability of rebuilding. Also, Google river erosion mechanics as well as slope erosions. Finally, please work with FEMA and disregard the politics being played to turn folks against it. At least hear them out.
It wasn't possible to prep for it much. The only prep was to have a house on high ground. Our house is 80ft above a creek. The creek is usually 6 inches deep and 6 feet wide. That little creek swelled to 10ft deep and 50ft wide. All we could do was move our livestock up the hill.

🙏😭🙏😭🇺🇸 Dear Sir, I am so so sorry for all of your losses. I’m so sorry you have experienced this historic catastrophic heartbreaking disaster. I just returned yesterday from delivering supplies and volunteering in NC. I thought I was mentally, physically and emotionally depleted from seeing the destruction and devastation from an in person boots on the ground perspective….but this video was on a whole different level. Watching your video documentation of your loss, imagining I’m standing there seeing it with you in disbelief, rewinding the video several times to make sure I saw what I saw & didn’t see because it is just gone…..has left me even more humbled! This video is proof that all we have is our life and health. We should not get attached to things and stuff. The things and the stuff can be replaced. I’m at a complete loss for how to feel or react. Your ability to hold yourself together and remain composed while recording this video is absolutely amazing. We will all donate and help you rebuild. You are great at building things and using your hands. Again, I’m sorry you lost your lovely bridge, house and truck. I hope your goats are okay. Wishing you the absolute best. Thank you for your comments. I've just recently had time to comment. I've slept 3-5 hours a night for the past 5 weeks, so I wanted to read (since I was up) and reply to these wonderful comments. Thank you.
Sorry for your loss. You would never imagine the water coming up that high. Same here in Swannanoa. You cannot imagine the whole valley having 20' of water in it. I pray for a speedy recovery for you.
Cant believe you documented all this. Its mind-blowing!
Im so sorry.
You having to axe through the roof was when my heart sank.
Hoping u all were going to be ok.
WOW! My heart aches for you and your family. Prayers for you and yours, this made me rethink how quickly everything can change overnight. 🙏 🙏🙏
So glad you survived, you did an amazing job documenting this horrible tragedy. I am so sorry for the loss of all of your hard work, my heart breaks for you. Please continue to keep us updated on your recovery journey. ❤
At the time, I was just trying to keep a record of it for myself, never realizing how devastating it was going to become. It's been five-plus weeks now, and I still have no answers. It's no one's fault. The magnitude of this is like nothing I have ever seen. I'm alive. I will be going back once I am able to access the property easily and move uphill at least 60' vertically above the flood point.
From West AVL, god bless. You’ll rebuild better than ever.
I will be donating to your community till i die...bless you all..
I am glad you are alive and were able to document this for the world to see, and so we won't forget ❤️
Thank you for staying calm, cool and collected enough to create this great documentation, I’ll be sharing this, and hope you find the resources you need and the strength to rebuild
Your sense of calm and gratitude during this devistation is admirable. I'm so sorry for your loss. But you're right, you just got to start over. Lots of love to you and your neighbors.
We lived in Waynesville until we moved two years ago. I am so sorry for your loss. Stay strong.
I'm on the OBX ( Southern Shores) 125 yds from the ocean. I've seen multiple hurricanes, Jay-Paul, but I've never seen anything like this. I agree with Trish that this is a powerful film...and I'm so sorry that you had to make it. Know that there are many of us wishing you well as you (will!) recover and we will continue sending support of all kinds to Yancy Co.
IKR! I was here for Florence in Wilmington, and there wasn't anywhere near this amount of water. Wilmington was an island for 3 days, but nothing like this. We're in a really protected spot here on the coast. Wish I could make the trip to help people, but by now everyone is rescued.
And I agree, in Carolina Beach and Wilmington NC. I wish the very best for you and yours and all who survived, may all of us be richly blessed in days to come and be able to survive and keep going after these disasters.
Yea watching the ocean in alot of storms is pretty crazy but the speed of all that water going downhill is just unimaginable
Glad yall are okay
Im also on the obx and theres quite a few of my friends bringing supplies that way
Sorry yall have to deal with all this
From Rutherford county here, I still can't believe this happened. It's mind blowing
Your ability to document this without breaking down is awe-inspiring. You have the most positive attitude in the face of total destruction. May the Gods favor you while you recover and rebuild.
So sorry. You are resilliant and strong. We are in California and support you. Will head to GoFundMe now. 🙏
my mind is blown away every time by the sheer volume of water their was.
We had NO TIME to evacuate, we never saw this coming! ever! By far the craziest weather event I've ever seen in my 37 years of life!
I’m sorry for the loss you have all had! Praying for everyone effected , praying the goats are all safe as well
Thank you for documenting this experience.
Look, man, keep this documentary safe, believe me, it will serve as a tool to inspire others into getting up and recover in the midst of the hardships of life because I trust God that you'll recover, bro ! This is so sad, so difficult, but you will recover from this one! I'm sorry for your loss.
I'm so so sorry you lost everything! Your video is a testament to your bravery!
That bridge you built was a beautiful piece of work, you’re very talented! You’re young, life will get better, but please move to higher ground.. Mother Nature will always win & always pull surprises on us. Sorry for loss.
That clip of 2022 & see how far down the river was to knowing it went way over that is hard to believe. You would never imagine it getting that high... for it to then surpass it even further.
Just seeing this now! I'm so sorry for your loss!
Thank you. It is such a beautiful place to live, and the people are wonderful, making this more tragic. I'm one of the lucky ones when I see what my neighbors lost.
I'm so sorry for the losses all of you have suffered. I'd hoped to relocate to that area in the future. This is heartbreaking.
I as well was hoping to move to Burnsville from Fla ... heartbroken too 😢 I pray for everyone there
Thank you for this important and painful documentation Jay-Paul. History is being made every day by you and your fellow community members. ❤ Best of luck to all.
I am quite impressed about what all you experienced. I can see that the Lord loves you very much by keeping you and most of your animals safe. I praise our Heavenly Father with all my heart. He knows you all very well so He was merciful to you children and adults accordingly .
Thank you for sharing this wonderful miracle.
So sorry for your loss. Glad you are ok. Great documentation .
Unbelievable! So glad you documented everything because it's beyond imagination how high the water rose. I can't imagine seeing all your hard work washed away. 🙏🏻
Good job Sir, love from lndonesia 😍
Thank you!
My son lived down the road from you and knows you a little bit. Lived in N&B apartments by the bridge that is no more. Maybe you know him. He’s the one with the dog that played in the river. I’m glad you guys are ok. One thing for sure is you guys are tough and resourceful. Hang in there.
GoFundMe on the way.
You have such a positive attitude during the very hardest time in your life, I applauded you. I drove down from NJ to donate as many things as possible to help people out. I wish I could do more to help you guys.
Thank you for documenting this. So hard to comprehend. My heart goes out to you and all your neighbors. Keep being strong.
I’m so sorry for everyone who has lost everything, including loved ones, during Helene. My heart breaks for you all. If I was in a position to donate or volunteer, I’d be there in a heartbeat. Sadly I cannot, but I can watch as many of these videos and subscribe to the survivors channels in the hope that it’ll help generate a little income for you. Sending love and hope for better days to come, from Arkansas.
This is horrifying. I’m so sorry, my heart breaks for all affected.
Amazing video.
Your reaction at the end puts me in mind of the poem “If” by Kipling.
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with wornout tools;
Retired geographer here:
I am glad you crossed over to the other side when you did, and am sorry to see so much of your life's work destroyed.
How could anyone prepare for something this massive? This was incredible to watch and heartbreaking at the same time....
I know, and people are saying you should have Prepped. Nobody prepares for flash flooding like this
It wasn't possible to prep for it much. The only prep was to have a house on high ground. Our house is 80ft above a creek. The creek is usually 6 inches deep and 6 feet wide.
That little creek swelled to 10ft deep and 50ft wide. All we could do was move our livestock up the hill.
Prayers are with you and all. So sorry for your loss.
So sorry Jay-Paul. Thank you for making and sharing your video.
Thanks for this video. Seeing is believing, could have never imagined the force of the river water and flooding this bad! Be safe
Yes, thank you for your coverage. Beautiful country. Concern for you from Dallas, Tx.
Watching your bridge wash away broke my heart for you 😢
Seeing the guy cutting the hole in the roof scared me 😮 I hope I never have to be in a position to do that 😢
There are so many real time videos I can watch showing me the devastation. I am praying people get water, food, power, internet and to keep the people safe who can bring those supplies and help them get home safe. Amen
That was the most powerful and heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen!!!! 🙏❤️
I’m so sorry. Thank you for documenting this for all of us so we can understand this event through your eyes.
I just donated. Possessions are just things, they can be replaced. Good luck.
The world needs a million people like you im from Knoxville my son is outside hendersonville hes fine thank God u are . How come they bought all this water with fresh water springs just gotta know where they are youll be fine cya
Sending good vibes, good energy, love, hugs and prayers. 🙏😭🙏💝🤗🇺🇸
That’s very sad and unbelievable!!! So sorry man!!! Mother nature has no mercy!
Atlanta is praying for all of you. Thanks Charlie for telling us about this filming. Your fire dept. seems to be such a wonderful group and I know you are helping each other. GOD BLESS you all.
Dang man I am so sorry to see this, I have been coming up 19W headed to Little Creek to visit a friend over the past year or so and I have watched your progress. I was just up there the other day but went in the back way but thought about your place there. So Sad!
Thank you so much. Once I am able, I will start all over again. Thanks!
From Buffalo, N.Y. My Fellow American, Im so, so sorry. There's not much more that I can say. GOD BLESS YOU. And living by late Erie with lake affect snowstorms of 5, 6 and 7 feet of snow I still say GOD BLESS YOU my FELLOW AMERICAN.
