I`ve got question though, let`s take for instance your charater you`re showing - once you do a walk cycle for him, how do you treat hands that will be going out of body and casting shadows beyond character? Animating the mask to stay within hand?

To make the shadow of the hands, I have created a shape layer and hidden it outside the body using the "Set matte" effect.

Yes, in this technique, it doesn't matter whether your design was created from scratch in After Effects or imported from Illustrator.
