  • Sometimes we are lucky enough to be able to work with extraordinary pieces of wood.
    The burl are difficult to work on the wood lathe because their density is irregular and create a strong imbalance. After several hours of work and a Danish oil finish, the result is magnificent.

    That was quite a brutal start to the turning ... I've only turned a small number of pieces and had to deal with an unbalanced piece a few times, nerve racking!!
    I was happy to see you didn't feel the need to add another piece of wood as a base, it was already perfect the way it was ... absolutely stunning piece of wood ... mother nature can indeed show us how it's done 👍

    You had to bring out the big tools for this one! That was a big chunk of wood!
    I like how you go with the flow and let the wood "speak" to you.
    The bowl turned out beautifully and I love the grain of the wood you used!

    I have a very similar piece of burl from a fallen tree I've been scared to turn due to its size and irregular shape. The first 3.5 minutes of this vid made me extremely nervous. Great job, absolutely stunning grain and flawless execution as usual. Thanks for sharing.

      indeed the magnifying glass can be complicated to turn because their grain is often very dense and irregular... beware of the imbalance 😉

    Hi Morgan what a marvellous piece of wood it is full of character it's a shame you had to take the bark of. The grain is lovely and the markings and colour and nooks and crannies are amazing, the pot is magnificent and unique. You really put alot of hard work into turning this.     Turning burls looks so dangerous at the start. I'd love to try turning, but I'm 70yo disabled woman with no resources for a workshop. I content myself converting fallen branches into smooth, creamy pseudo-driftwood for macrame hanging projects.

    The end result is very pretty, you did that burl justice.👍👍❤️ I also noticed that you were using your old lathe. I guessed that it was probably better to do that than take the chance with this large, awkward shaped, dense wood burl just in case your lathe didn't like it.

    Yeah! You started with an amazing piece of wood, and it came out beautiful! But what a pounding you endured at first! And the shaking lathe. Morgan, are you saving up for a bigger lathe? I've done the same with my little lathe - maxing it out! I'm hoping to move up this year.

    I thought you were going to make a bell at first. Have you ever tried that with a burl? Not one that would swing back and forth, but just representative of a bell.

    Beautiful piece of wood. Not a fan of the unfinished rim (naturale?) Personal preference here but I think it takes away from the piece.

    I have several burls… cherry, walnut, oak and hickory. Some have been kept for 15 years.
    I’ve procrastinated turning them because I didn’t want to destroy them. But, watching how you tackled this one has me thinking that I need to just dive in and give them a turn!

    PS: was that a gelled Polyacrolate glue that you used to stabilize the cracks?

      it's not always easy to turn the burls because they have an irregular density.
      For the cracks I use low viscosity cyanoacrylate glue so that it penetrates well into the fibers

    Le radiche sono sempre laboriose ma alla fine danno soddisfazione, questo girare sul tornio in modo ondulatorio non fa bene ai cuscinetti della macchina, Mi complimento per la tua costanza , mentre lavoravi ci vedevo nascere una campana, non so se hai mai avuto modo di utilizzare l'olio enologico si presta bene per gli oggetti che devono contenere alimenti o frutta. Buon tutto.

      In effetti questo tipo di parte richiede molto sforzo da parte del tornio per legno e dei cuscinetti, ma il mio è montato su silent block per smorzare un po' lo squilibrio e salvare un po' i cuscinetti.
