1. Flat surfaces (tables, top of the fridge, etc.): stuff/paper clutters on it. Solution: Eliminate flat surfaces and pick up after yourself.
2. No systems for doing things/no places to put things (example: your keys, wallet.) Solution: Designate a place/"home" for everything to go. Things get less dirty (messy?) by having a place for everything!
3. Messy digital storage. It's like having a messy closet; you can't find anything. Search online for how other people organize their digital problem areas and use their system; it will save you a lot of time. Gabe's video on this will be tagged at the end of this video.
4. Not embracing minimalism soon enough. Thinking it's weird or whatever. Just jump in and it will be done and you will notice/reap the benefits right away!
Not sure what tips 5 & 6 are? Good video though!
"Stupid flat surfaces" made me laugh. They're the bane of my existence, grrr. 😖😂😂😂
Mine too 😂
Yes. But, honestly, if it weren't for the "stupid flat surfaces" I wouldn't ever even have needed to watch minimalism videos. They are like having a smoke detector.
The things inside the closet don't bother me much at all. It is the things I see that cause enough stress inside of me to make changes.
I agree! No matter how many times a clean my surfaces and put things away it just builds up again.
This channel deserves a million subs👍

@@GabeBult Keep Working man!
Certainly does! 👏😃
I love your outdoor shots, especially on the river. It's so cool seeing familiar places from my hometown in your videos!
I love that walk down by the river I've done it like a hundred times
Having a designated landing place for the things you carry every day is so important! You get so much time back in your life instead of searching for things!
I’ve been watching since January 2022. I’m 73 and live in Lenoir NC. I watch old and new content. It inspires me to keep up my journey. Thank you
I have been listening to your videos for a few weeks. The message is really sinking in. Thank you so much
I'm with you, Gabe. Nothing had a place, till now. It still is a work in progress, but feels so good when I know where something goes, and where it is when I need it. This process had continued to keep me donating stuff. Thanks for talking about what's going on with you.
I got rid of the coffee pot and purchased a small coffee press and tea kettle. The counter is clutter free and the tea kettle sits on the stove and is used all the time. There truly are ways to minimize stuff. I clean and organize homes and that is when I became a minimalist. There is too much going on in the world without having to worry about where things are in my home.
Thank you for your awesome videos! I love that you have other videos going on while your talking, it gets so boring when people just video themselves talking the whole time. I also love that you have the same issues as me and make everything really relatable. Thank you for showing your catch-all room, I have one too and while it doesn’t have wall to wall furniture anymore, it still gets the stuff I don’t know where to put. It’s getting better though, lol! I’m so glad I found your channel, you do a really great job.
Yes! Agh, as a messy person, I also struggle with flat surfaces. They either need to have *nothing* on top of them or not exist. 😆 if there is a piece of decor or something on top of them, I will inevitably pile other things on top. 🙄
love your videos , thank you so much for those ideas that you share with everybody
I’ve been a subscriber for quite some time. Your quirky approach/personality/being real is so much fun. Your content is relevant. Thank you for being you. I’m in Portland, Oregon.

Wow the things you said really make so much sense!
I believe their is a " red room" in the Whitehouse, could fix it up nice.
The energry which you showed towards the end of the video kept me wanting for more. 🖖
Hi ,I've just recently been watching your videos. And haven't stopped.ive just downsized from a three bedroom housing corp to a one bedroom so struggles is real😱loving the minimalist so I'm applying that too.its a lot easy that I live alone thanks for sharing your inspiring videos cheers Lia from new Zealand ...

Great content super insightful
Great video thanks
I seem to have had similar issues, only just getting onto it. Keys, digital and flat surfaces do collect things unless you are on to it. I also seem to be collecting stuff at the moment for gift giving and making at the moment but haven’t taken the time to find a place for it while I am doing it..... I am noticing the clutter. Want it clear again!
Great video as always, but I especially enjoyed the quick views of beautiful New England in autumn.
It's amazing out here right now
@@GabeBult Yep! Rainy night tonite, even is awesome.
Great video! I had the same problems ! Minimalising 7 month. I had a room same as you. Almost empty now!

It is really nice of you to share your "stepping stones per say" to how you got to where you are at as a Minimalist. We all have various ways of approaching and achieving success with Minimalism. I liked using the dynamic approach, but had spent years contemplating my idea of change prior to jumping into it. The "flat surface and clutter stories" you shared are so relatable. Having less surfaces and specific spots to "put everything" like keys makes a world of difference. Speaking about worlds, happy to hear you are getting great results for your "pins on the globe project".......pins will be one purchase made out of necessity .... Lol :-)
These contents are just amazing, you deserve more subscribers, and I hope you'll get them soon! Greetings from Mexico :3

Keys in fridge. Savage! 💯
Man, I laughed sooo haaard when you found your keys in your fridge! 🤣🤣🤣
i also did that with my tv's controller 😁
Oklahoma! Love how your help!
Loved your videos! Learning a lot and i can totally relate with the "flat surfaces".. and im like looking around at the flat surfaces in our house right now and mentally thinking which items i need to throw out after this 🤣🤣 Hi! from Bacolod City, Philippines 🇵🇭
Greetings from 2022. Thank you for this video. Your sense of humour about this topic is inspiring, as is your practical advice. Last month I turned 50 and my greatest achievements to my mind was 1. to hang a hook on my door for my keys; 2. to always put my glasses in their case next to my bed (avoids confusion when I wake up in the middle of the night and urgently need to see what is going on); 3. to have a hook for my hairbrush in the bathroom and 4. to make sure I never run out of toilet paper 😄 I hear you about those stupid flat surfaces. OMW. Thank you too for showing the murder room. It was really encouraging. Sending 💖 from Cape Town.

I really like watching your video. Good content all the times.
Awesome thank you!
That is a great list. For me it was trying to perfect everything where I needed to make sure I've 100% decluttered and organized everything in my house to the point where it would distract me from other important tasks and a much worse distraction compared to Netflix and YouTubw. Hope this could help anyone if they have struggled similarly and have a great night:)

Hi Gabe I have started to take your advice and started to decluter my house. It is hard but I am getting there. I have put a lot of stuff up on Facebook market place and have made over €100 so far and I am waiting for the lock down to end so I can put a stall in the local flee market. Thanks for the inspiration. Reg Shannon in Dublin Ireland
Hi love your channel. You mentioned your globe so hello from 🇯🇴 jordan
Systems are key,for sure!. Greetings from Washington. ✌️
I need a system for my systems. I have my relational, home & educational stuff.
Than my outside stuff.
Constant balancing act. Would love to have it all in order all the time but not my reality with life 101
Is it DC or state? If state, I’m from Seattle area!
About the key just hang them in from of the door if you would like to find them quickly.Nice video thank you for sharing.
For organizing after decluttering, I follow the Clutterbug system. She shares the different types of people- I am a ladybug🐞!
I love clutter bug I am a bee. 😁
I am a cricket 🦗
I’m like a dung bettle, just hauling stuff around.. hahaha , probably more like a messy minimalist, but give me time and I will get there! Kudos to the good bugs!
I started minimalism when I had my first child four years ago to combat baby clutter, still going today! From Kangaroo Island Australia 😁
Awesome 👍
4 kids here too!
I started more hardcore when I was getting ready to move. I was going to a house twice as big, but I wanted to get rid of half the stuff. It helped make moving an enjoyable and exciting experience instead of drudgery
5 guys here. In a trailer! Had to spend lots of time organizing & reorganizing & be on my game. ( not that we had brought a lot, just given to us mostly) so 7 people in a 12x 65! But usually you have one at a time & if you live mostly outside in the yard & city, you keep your sanity.
Hi from Kyiv, Ukrain🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
I just find you and I fall in love to your channel💙💙 I love your work. Keep going! We love you!
Thanks 👍
Digital clutter and lack of system to organise and manage digital stuff is my big challenge too.
Murder room! 😂 That made me laugh out loud!
Made me think....my goodness doesn't anger lead to murder, yikes!
The shots of you searching were
hilarious. I just leave my key in the
apartment door key hole. But in
Switzerland it is very safe Every
house door key or building key
is different. Keys are the flat type.
My apartment door has 3 metal
and three metal rods that run through the door middle. These go into the floor, door wall sides and
A area on top of the door. This key
also opens the main door of all
apartment buildings.
I've left them in the keyhole a few times as well and I live in a really sketchy neighborhood lol
Thanks
📍Stevens point, Wisconsin! Love your videos especially with minimalism tips 👏🏻❤️
Glad you like them!
I can't help but feel that Gabe is watching my everyday life & just narrating it.
Me too especially when I drink my soda.
I'm here feeling all guilty for having a junk drawer and then comes Gabe all "hold my beer, here is my junk ROOM"!!!
Lol
This is really cool video. Omg the murder room is so random. I definitely don't think I could ever be in a room red like that one. Burbank California dont forget to put a pin on the globe for that one.
Yeah I don't know what they were thinking with these colors. I'll throw one on for you!

Oh I feel you with the digital mess!!! Desktop is my best friend to find everything

@@GabeBult I meant the home screen 😛 on my Windows Laptop it’s called „desktop“
Ohhhhh lol
This is so me. Before Marie Kondo every drawer was a junk drawer.
Hello from South Africa 🇿🇦 🙂
my declutter method is periodic and when it happens it is gradual, little by little I get rid of unused stuff.
Whitby, Ontario, Canada. ❤️ from 🇨🇦
The biggest flat surface I struggle with is the floor. I never understood the key thing, I just leave them in my pants pocket and change the pocket contents in the morning to my new pants; place for everything is key though when it comes to cleaning up. My biggest mistake is not getting of the 'buying something as a replacement for doing something, treadmill.
I did a little decluttering today. I threw away a plastic broken hanger, a piece of packaging to something I brought & broken glass. That's it for today.😊
Gradual ia good

For filenaming on the computer:
"This is my regular file [yyyy mm dd]" where [yyyy mm dd] is the date as year, month, day in digits. This way all of the files in alphabetical order are also in date order with the most recent one at the bottom.
Someone told me this in a job in 2001 and I've used it ever since.
Totally stupid flat surface! Referred and referenced you today, great stuff Gabe, keep creating!
Same shirts!!! Hilarious.
The search for the key wrecked me up so good hahaha. Why does it always have to end up inside the fridge ?
I don't know how it happens lol
Some of this is weird because keys go in my purse or a key ring holder but I always have my purse in every room with me. I sold my laptop 2 years ago and use my smartphone for almost everything, I really don't need a laptop or computer for emailing or anything anymore. I mostly but bathroom products that I use or food and then bills for overhead and medical.
Hi from Reykjavik Iceland🇮🇸
I think I found my favorite minimalist. 👍😁
thanks!
You should try the app Notion. It's AMAZING. There are a bunch of UA-cam creators that have videos on how they use it for their projects, maybe you could check them out. The first one that comes to mind is Thomas Frank, the guy uses Notion for absolutely EVERYTHING and has a bunch of videos on his channel. Plus, he has a bunch of really cool other videos that you could check out ;) Hope it helps!

can you make a video how you make your systems
File system for video creation:
In any hard drive that you want, create a root folder (it’s like entering into your house).
Then create different rooms in that house for different needs, and inside of each room, you can add additional locations like dressers.
Imagine you have inside of that room a place for your t-shirts, pants, jackets, underwear, etc.
Example:
Root folder: “Creative life.”
House rooms: UA-cam, clients, papers, etc
Now, in that dresser “UA-cam,” you will create a folder or space for each video.
Before the name of the video, you can add the date, first, year, then the month, and then a descriptive name for the video “20-11 First year of minimalism,” inside of that folder, you can create a few more folders like “videos,” “audio,” “images” (inside of images you can add the thumbnail), extras.
So if you want to find this video's thumbnail in a few months, you would go to Creative life > UA-cam > 20-11 First year of minimalism > images> and look for the thumbnail.
I have created a lot of content, and I have tried soooo many different systems, for me, this is the best one.
Don’t use dates or tag names. Just use short and really descriptive words.
For example, if you go to my computer and I ask you to find a photo of me in the Eiffel Tower, without me saying anything, you could find it.
The location is root> photos> travel> Europe>France>Paris, and then you look for the picture.
I always imagine my folder structure like places in my house. If you want a fork, you go to the kitchen. 😉
Thinking like this, you can also create assets that you can share with other projects.
For example, in the root> UA-cam, you can have one folder named videos (inside of this one you create a folder per video), audio, images, etc., or just assets, this ones you will be sharing them with all your video projects.
Your background music, sound effects, motion graphics, model releases, receipts, references, etc., go there, and you don’t need to duplicate files.
I hope this helps and I really enjoy your content.
Wishing you the best of success in your adventures 🤗
Just love your videos. I have been decluttering very slowly, because I live with 4 other people, who are the opposite of minimalist)))
Please add Azerbaijan to your globe. It is a very small, but wonderful country right on the shore of the Caspian sea.
From Green Bay, Wisconsin!
Not everyone can declutter all at once. I’ve got health issues so little and often with a few bursts when I have the energy. My personality is like yours but I’ve had to learn to do less, slow is fast for my situation 😊
I've also got health issues and need to pace myself. Rachel Hoffman's books Unf*ck Your Habitat and Cleaning Sucks are awesome. She writes about how to adapt her approach based on your own unique abilities and challenges.
