I remember seeing Goldrush play at the 'Prospect Hill' hotel in Kew. I was amazed seeing that Tommy mainly played drums throughout the set. Great gig. GAZ (Melbourne/Australia)
You could write a thesis on this band/album. . Agree with another poster re guitar solo on Desert Wind. .it's my favorite solo of all time. .starts off Gilmour-esque then it goes into the stratosphere...too many highlights on this album. ... i bought a musicman amp years ago from the trading post. .when i arrived to collect it, the seller was David Mare, the lead vocalist. .the band had just split and he was selling his gear. .so i became the owner of the amp he plays on this recording. .if only i still had it!
In the late seventies they had a regular gig at The Governor’s Pleasure, The Rocks, Sydney. I had the pleasure to share a few beers with them. They were a great live band, great weekends and great memories. RIP Phil
Just so sad the Wiz is no longer with us and this band should have been very big stars. I used to see them regularly at the Muso's Club in Cleveland Street near Central in Sydney and they just pulled this out every night. Very BIG sound as Phil liked it, always played on 11 and moved the walls. loved it. Tommy kicked the kit OK in this band..
Man!!!! Great to hear this again. Was transported back to UNSW to an O Week concert at lunch time 1981! Then to a pub in Armidale circa 84. They were a great band. Thank you for the memories- made my day- what a good gift after a fairly ordinary few days
wowness thanks to who ever uploaded this . what a flashback what a trip .what awesome aussie music and musicians what a world it is now now .. asid flashback any time thanks world . up loaders and good ol ausie rock and roll esk .. dont forget about redgum and goanna . they are here too :) love peace and harmony everyone .
Awesome to finally get this album after losing my vinyl copy years ago. Still have many fond memories of seeing these guys at Miranda hotel and the famous Caringbah Inn all those years ago!
Really brilliant stuff. It seems strange this far down the track that they only recorded one live album. They appeared to have more than enough material to do a full studio recording. Perhaps it was just a part-time thing for them. Can't find a weakness. Phil's guitar is fantastic (would you expect less?), as is all of the stringed-instrument work. Tommy's drumming is excellent - he doesn't play anything really flash, but his melodic sense and feel is amazing. As a drummer myself, I can't really see any obvious way you could improve on his parts and perhaps that is the ultimate accolade. Really impressed by the bass player - lovely tone and beautiful playing. Simply superlative in every way - Sweet Elysse is my current fave song and love the final bars of that song and the ending. If Phil E does have the master tapes, time to give then to Gil Matthews at Aztec Records and have it re-released on CD with the full Aztec treatment!!
Unfortunately no one has the master because it was lost from the ABC archives where it was recorded. Even the version Phil released and was selling was taken from the record. and to be honest, Phil and Tommy don't even mention the band these days because they were all young and not famous at the time. This version was put on CD about 20 years ago when CD burning was in it's infantsy with windows 97 so now the process could do a good job on a good record. What you are hearing on the record is the real deal because at the time , it was recorded direct to disk.
I used to see Goldrush consistently & I have to see when I have see them together on guitars it was Phil who was the better guitarist by a long shot-loved them both but Phil Wmmanuel took the CAKE!! GREAT MENORIES, OF THE NTH SHORE TOO :)
Cheers. I put this on to disk about 15 years ago because there was no info on the album from anywhere. The ABC where it was recorded lost all the archives long ago.
I saw these guys a couple of times; once at the old Penrith Leagues Club and then at Narara. They blew everyone away both times. Had a great chat with Mark Collins (banjo) after the gig at the Leagues Club - he was a champion bloke.
Champion discovery!! Saw these guys live at a Gold Coast Hinterland festival in the early 80's. Bought the album after that but lost it years later in a move overseas. Appreciate seeing it uploaded here.
Thanks for putting this up DugBugs1 - this was the best value album in my collection, in terms of how many times I played it right through!! Every track has its own appeal. And it was good value for the band as well. I spoke to Phil Emamnuel a few years after it was released. He said it only cost them a few hours of studio time (about $600, from memory) to mix this album because it was recorded at no cost to the band.
I Remember going to a couple of his guitar clinics at Rock Music Bankstown in the late 70's. He did a Great Version of Sultans of Swing and Europa by Santana, and he gave around 20-30 people a mind blowing concert as well . I was one of the Lucky one's to attend them. Don't know what happened to Ken ( The Shop owner ) though. B.T.W. The clinics were for free. can't beat that...Yeah..... lol ... :-) Thanks Ken, wherever you are. :-)
Thanks dugbugs. I have this on vinyl but no means to play it any more. This takes me way back to the Newport Arms hotel on many a Thursday night in my youth seeing these guys live - even before Phil joined. Guy Dickerson, who Phil replaced, was an even better guitarist IMHO but was real flaky and the band sacked him.
Thanks for posting this. I have had this on vinyl since the '80s also with no way of playing. One of my favourite live albums of all time. Phil's solo on Desert Wind is sublime - full of power and emotion. Awesome track . I believe Tommy is selling a needle drop of this on his CGP website if people would like a copy. I have always wondered what the T.F.F. initials stood for on track 4. My guess was Too F&%!cking Fast! Great playing from Phil and Spud Collins.
Someone mentioned the solo in Desert Wind to me. And I had to admit I'd never heard it. So I finally looked it up. How can anyone else play while that guitar pyrotechnics was going on? I'd be standing there open-mouthed. Wow....
Fucking Awesome!! Lost this album in a divorce! Saw them in Taree, NSW 100 years ago! The last live band I have seen lately that comes close is the Foo Fighters!
they play two uptempo country jams.phils playing is better than albert lee and as good as danny Gatton. I got lessons from phil in 80s and I still cant this shit!
Snoofle Bum Phil doesn't have the master copy of the original recording. He wanted to borrow the vinyl record from me so they could re release it but the record was scratched on one side, so I loaned him a tape of the record, but that was no good either as the sound wasn't balanced right. He probably has a master copy of the vinyl record from which it was recorded.

Just bought the LP on eBay, could not wait to get it on my turntable 😍
Absolutely over the moon that I have this awesome piece of Oz Rock history.
In the late seventies they had a regular gig at The Governor’s Pleasure, The Rocks, Sydney. I had the pleasure to share a few beers with them. They were a great live band, great weekends and great memories. RIP Phil

Attended this concert and nearly died of happiness.
I saw them in Sydney in 1980 & 81 I know exactly what you mean ... my favourite vinyl album just played it yesterday
RIP The Wiz Phil Emmanuel
17.10 Desert Wind, one of the best guitar solos ever put down, broom stick required
Absolutely - a masterpiece and, incredibly, done live off the cuff. We have lost a genius.

And Mark Collins on banjo. He won the Banjo Comp in Tamworth in the early 80's.
I used to see Goldrush consistently & I have to see when I have see them together on guitars it was Phil who was the better guitarist by a long shot-loved them both but Phil Wmmanuel took the CAKE!! GREAT MENORIES, OF THE NTH SHORE TOO :)

When I saw Goldrush in the seventies at a Wine Bar in Wooloomooloo Tommy was Playing Banjo & Drums. I was 17 & thought he was about 14. He was 22
Snoofle Bum It would have been Mark Collins on banjo, but it was Tommy on drums.
Egg on my face, loved Goldrush forgot it was the Emmanuls i have the album in its dust cover.. happy
man clean it and play it

They were regulars at the San Miguel in Cammeray in the early 80s. Always a brilliant night out.
Thank you for posting this. One of the best Australian albums ever. What great musicians.
Saw these guys at a student union day at Swinburne. AWESOME! pretty sure I have the tape somewhere. Brings back so many great memories.
These guys should make a come back one of the best !!!!
Mate it might be a bit hard as Phil is no longer with us 😢

This is an unbelievably good show
Saw Goldrush a couple of times at The Governor's Pleasure in the Rocks, Sydney. Always a great night when they played.
I work for them for a while after Tommy left doing foh sound and then with Phil’s band Tommy turned up a few times and Jamed miss them
Had this record back in the day after hearing EON FM play a whole side of it. Dont know what happened to it but pretty rare today.

Some seriously good drums and fretless bass going on behind it too
Actually I remember them doing dueling banjo's as kids on some show either, child protejes
Comb&cutter every Wednesday night at Blacktown in early 80s👍
Amazing sonics etc
Bought the "Keep in Touch" 45 for $1 at a second-hand record store in Sydney in the mid 80's, and recorded it onto a cassette "mixed tape"!
Fucking Awesome!! Lost this album in a divorce! Saw them in Taree, NSW 100 years ago! The last live band I have seen lately that comes close is the Foo Fighters!
What? That's like chalk and cheese what are you talking about 😣
they play two uptempo country jams.phils playing is better than albert lee and as good as danny Gatton. I got lessons from phil in 80s and I still cant this shit!
Glad to share
nice, thanks!
And Tommy used to have Long Blond Hair
Sounds like the Australian Crawl.
Phil has the Master Copy

Ian Grebet This has been available on CD from his web site for a number of years.
I made this copy around 15 years ago
dugsbugs1 Yes I know, Phil sent me a copy around the same time as soon as it was re releases.
I've got it on a Cassette Tape, where can I get the CD ?
Download from this video with a youtube Downloader or google it to find out where to buy it.
The bought CD is taken off a record anyway.

"Classic"
@@dugsbugs1 just needed to timestamp cactus for obvious reasons, whole albums a classic but 🌵 is THE classic
@@swiftdeparture Probably the best track on there.
Phil was a legend.
