    very good video! I'm extremelly concerned about this topic since.. many months ago! Really hard to understand by myself...
    Lots of information in 15min, but it's good to know all these concepts before, so I can have a better understanding while testing different pappers.

      Alexandre Carneiro I'm so glad this was helpful for you! This was just the tip of the iceberg - I have lots more videos on papers planned! :) But you should definitely start testing papers yourself - you'll have so much fun finding the ones that really make art fun for you personally! Have you found any you like yet?

      Amberwing Art good to know you have plans for that theme!! ahaha
      I'm at the same time triyng to develop my own drawing/painting process. So, now I'm finalizing a drawing in colored pencil in a paper that I conclude that I'm not totally comfortable with (too smooth).
      The hard part is because where I live, I don't have access to exactly the same paper I see on tips and tutorials through the internet. So I need to understand these concepts and characteristics to relate with the papers that I found.
      Thaks!
      looking forward for next videos!

      Alexandre Carneiro I'm a huge fan of very smooth papers (like Bristol) - for graphite. Unfortunately super smooth papers don't react the same way with colored pencils as they do with graphite. Smooth papers let you have total control over your graphite drawing so that you can create your own textures and shading without having to "fight" the paper - you can get super smooth blends and it registers all of the tonal shifts. With colored pencil (whether you're using wax based or oil based), they just tend to sort of slide around on smooth paper and you can't get good blends - there has to be at least a slight bit of tooth to it to hold the colored pencil in. Because of that, you can't get very many layers down on smooth papers and details tend to be muddy.
      I don't know where you live, but I live out in the middle of nowhere, so I always purchase online. For colored pencils, I highly recommend trying out Fabriano hot press watercolor paper, 300 or 150 pound in extra white (be sure it's the extra white, not just the regular white - they have different textures). That paper is very smooth but it has just enough tooth to it to hold & blend the colored pencils beautifully. It's what I use and I absolutely love it. It's a little pricey, though, so if you can't get that, then the next one I'd recommend for colored pencils would be Canson 80 lb drawing paper - it works with the colored pencils surprisingly beautifully! Good luck & have fun experimenting!

    Quick question: What would you recommend for coloured pencil drawings: Bristol smooth or Bristol vellum?

    • @AmberwingArt
      @AmberwingArt  8 років тому

      I can highly recommend the Fabriano extra white paper - it's technically a smooth paper, but it's not slick like bristol - it's made of cotton, so there are still enough grooves to grab the colored pencil and take many layers. And the extra white really makes the colors pop. If you prefer a paper with a little more tooth, you can use the regular white version, which is has a lot more texture to it, but is still in the Fabriano line, which is a high end paper. If money is a consideration, I've found that Canson sketch paper is actually surprisingly good for colored pencil. It doesn't take as many layers as a finer paper, so that's the trade off, but it grips the pencil well and is overall a nice surface in the inexpensive range. I hope that's helpful!

    I have found cheap printer paper that does work amazingly well though. It is so cheap that it is rough and a cheap ass chinese HB pencil leaves a very dark line on it.

    • @AmberwingArt

      Endezeichen Grimm Some people really like printer paper - and if you're an advanced Artist then it's really up to choice. But if you're learning, it can really stunt your growth as far as learning proper shading techniques. And if you're planning on selling any of your work, it'll be more difficult to sell if your work is on cheap paper... I hope you'll share a link to see your work!
