Also if you commented in the original video don't take it personally, I just thought it was a fun intro/challenge and went with it
Nice vid loved it!
"if I was right, or if chat was wrong"
That was savage, loved it
Fun fact: there's a serious question over whether or not flails were ever actually used in combat. Much like the iron maiden, it was likely a 19th or 20th century invention to make the past seem more barbaric. Think about how impractical it would be to keep track of a swinging wrecking ball while you're in a big battle, trying to brain the enemy without braining yourself first.
Flails and flail-like weapons definitely existed and were used, but how much is really up in the air. They are not as impractical as they may seem, but they've got not much over a mace or morningstar. Also, weapons, which are dangerous to the wielder have definitely been used throughout history, and two notable examples are the Kusarigama and the Urumi. That all being said, practicality isn't the first thing someone considers when they've got to defend themselves; a lot of weapons stem from farm equipment, and while a weight on a chain may not be the most practical of weapons, I'd pick it over my bare fists, that's for sure.
there are the wheat trashing flails used by numerus pesant uprisings most notably hussites
Yeah, no, flails absolutely did exist, they pop up in medieval manuscripts a fair amount. The problem is they're quite different from their fantasy counterparts, with longer handles and much shorter chains. In fact, the most well documented variety has such a long handle it's more or a polearm, and it's chain basically just acts as a hinge for a very differently shaped kind of head instead of your classic Morningstar (think like the head of the pumpkin head flails in this game actuall).
A lot of flails that we have in the modern day _are_ actually later fabrications, but we still have reason to believe they existed in the middle ages proper
Like the other person said, the debate is mostly over exactly how common they were, which the consensus seems to be "not very"
It was indeed funny during the stream. But yeha the Urumi was definitely used with its properties of switching between a flail and a sharp blade.
They were used a lot by hussites in the hussite wars where they used them while standing behind cover in their waggon forts. They were usally used with two hands and a much longer staff though
With the absolute huge buff Flails received in 1.09, Flails really cannot be considered useless or unusable anymore
Just very bad if not the worst weapon class
Not useless but completely outclassed by literally every other weapon type
@@MrSuvvri still better than whips though. Posture damage and you can actually do crits haha
Shhhh people don't know they got buffed
@@fishnutz5196 unless you're using double bleed whips
You really are showing us that everything in this game is usable at least, this was a nice run good job completing it
P.S : The Metal Hellsinger and Monster Hunter songs are fitting so well during the fights, it made me want to play those games once again
Wait what, flails? I actually used dual-flails for the whole playthrough on my very first playthrough when the game was released, I found them to be quite good!
This is pure click bait nothing else flails have been buffed as well . So I really don't get this video .
My best friend abused the heck out of the flail weapon art for his first playthrough, lol.
Flails are pretty cool though
My first playthrough was mostly flail only lol. I got double Nightrider's Flails for most of the game. It made a lot of enemies very easy, especially crystalians and other rock-type creatures. The spinning R2 was great on dragons while on horseback as well. Eventually I traded it for Vyke's spear though, sometime around Godfrey/Hoarah Loux. The short range made me mad lol.
That was exactly my build too! I used a single nightrider flail for everything until my friend dropped one for me at altus and then I stuck with double to the end. With a liberal use of dragon and blood incantations.
Congratulations on completing the run!
Plateau Peak never disappoints❤
You know what I think is impossible for Plateau… whip only… Dark Souls 3
I beat my first playthrough using the Nightrider Flail in a sorcerer build. I've since beaten the game with a few other builds and I still like how flails feel against certain enemies.
There fact that they don't bonk on anything, be it shields or "hard" enemies like the rock dudes in the mines, is really nice to have.
I don't know why anyone would call them bad unless they are so elitist that they cannot stand the idea of using any weapon that hasn't been placed in S rank of every tier list.
As you quickly realized, flails' biggest strength in this game is its high stagger damage for a fast weapon, and while that's something hammers can also do, flails also generally have a longer range than hammers on top of a few extras, like being unparriable and having an innate bleed + a default multi-hit skill that abuses it.
Pairing a flail with a medium shield, a regular dagger/misericorde and high stagger ashes of war like lion's claw or stamp upward cut is the best play, as that maximizes stagger damage through said skills and speedy yet greatsword-like guard counters which in turn allows for more dagger crits on bosses.
Well once again the image of someone I have in my head from watching videos and hearing their voice is completely different than what I expected lol. Still a beautiful beast tho
Staff bonk only when?
Dam you want him to suffer lol
WornoutGamer4 did that, he suffered so much...
Let's beat the game with torches later
Dual flails for Godskin Duo might actually be a legit strat. I mean, it worked way better than a lot of other pure melee builds against them... was not expecting that~
Also the fact that phase 2 Rykard's hitbox is still so jank is just really funny to me ngl
Glorious hair
2:23 "He said it! He said the word!"
idk man, first playthrough was with a flail, wen through it pretty easily
Like, they're not unusable or anything, it's just any weapon class is better. Especially before they got buffed in the last big patch
@@Ezekiel_Allium I'd much rather use a flail than any straight sword or hammer, most greatswords, too. Great stagger, bleed, and strike. Range isn't an issue, just don't stand on the other side of the arena.
@@viktorlindeberg7363 greatswords are harder hitting, have good stagger, and several good bleed options ignoring infusions.
Straight swords are faster, have better recovery, an amazing array of ashes of war, and probably higher damage as well.
Hammers go bonk
@@Ezekiel_Allium "hammers go bonk"
@@th3letterE Am I wrong?
In all seriousness I'm not a big hammers fan. I liked them in DS3, but in elden ring they lack the poise damage and moveset to give them the oomph they once had, I much prefer greathammers to fill that role. I think they're probably objectively better than flails, but flails have more cool factor, so I'd honestly pick a flail over a hammer, plus the unparryability and shield chip damage I think they might have are cool bonuses.
Greatswords are my favorite weapon class though and i consider them both much better and much more fun weapons than flails. The executioner greatsword r2 is my favorite thing in the world
Flails are katanas with less damage more poise damage
Flails also have shorter range 😢
The posie damage to wieght ratio is crazy on flails
This April Fools video is 21 days late. Flails are bonkers good.
The stache is goated
i have watched your videos for two years now and i'm still wondering were does your accent come from :D !
I’d like to see you do a no jump attack challenge run
That would be a battle against muscle memory as much as the bosses in the game.
Unrelated but my half-italian blood is boiling with joy.
The Flail was my first weapon and it was a bitter realization (earlier patches).
A tip for fire giant in phase 2 stay infront much funner safer and yoy fo more damage to his hand also the stagger gods are straightswords because of square off staggers the draconic tree sentinel in 2 hits
This mam is too gorgeous bruhhh
Elden ring was my first fromsoft game, and I started my ehile first playthrough with the flail and used it until I got the godslayer greatsword. It was so bad, but it made me really good at the game using it cuz it only did 260 dmg or sum
How about a bow only run next?
Flails are pretty good compared to the rickety shield, briar armor, Linaty of proper death, barefists and more
clearly the people in chat were pulling a pro-flails joker's trick
I just noticed that Command Niall is missing a foot
How
@@antx_soulsborne_meat_rider I don't know I've seen his model at least 40 times now. I'm embarrassed by the fact I just noticed.
@@Goof-gi9jq yeah that also reminds me whats up with the tarnished and prosthetics
TOGETHAA!!!
Btw just learned you can jump Margit tail swipe and get a hit at the same time
Ash of war Kick only run when?
Overall, flails look BAD, but vastly superior to whips.
TORCH!
As someone who tried a flail only in like 1.02, AoW and bloodflame lol. Godskin duo as always stopped me
Now to actually get through some bad weapons that look cool.
Urumi. Cool history but pretty goofy aah animations.
Wait, I'm not sure about this, so I hope someone knows;
Can you riposte with the whip?
Played through whole game on release with flails(cuz they looked cool and unique) they aren't that bad imo, really enjoyed my first play through
Skyshot only!
So, like, they're clearly a lot better than what I thought, but I do feel like a pair of Maces could have done exactly the same thing but easier.
Maces don't have bleed🎉you just don't like the way flails look ...
@@DeoSiege morning star/spiked club does
Hammers generally have less range than flails and are only really faster on charged R2s and kinda on L1s, but otherwise they do marginally more poise damage, yes; like a whopping 0,5 more base poise iirc.
Nice face reveal! Keep up the content ❤
hmm. i wonder where people rank bows and crossbows among the weapon classes.
No Raptor's Black Feathers?
Beat elden ring with fire's deadly sin (Basically immolation)
This dude sounds like The Spiffin Brit lol
They buffed the flail
I did this on my first playthru of the game lol
its really not that bad
Guys... I'm starting to suspect that whips can't repost... not sure why...
The only good use i give them was against the chrystal bosses while i was playing a dex build.
Is empty hand not the worst weapon? No upgrades, minimal scaling, no range. Note thats not fist weapons, just punching with bare fists. If something is worse than that I would be kinda curious to know what it is.
Aka my first playthrough lol.. it boils down to a lot of jump attacks :/
Do all Frenchmen with facial hair look like Guy Fawkes?
are you by any chance italian? fra?
Why didn't Mohg 'Nihil' himself?
He dose know they are just dex scale hammers right?
Flails are deffinately better than whips hahaha they have crits and huge posture damage
Jokes to you guys, torch is actually the worst.
beat it with only bare fists
Are you Prods dad?
I dont think that they are bad tbh
fist weapons is the worst
Just use the original AoW with bloodflame, boom easy game
Sorry not real. Varre's bouquet is the real worst weapon in game
Nah fists are much worse (no weapon fists)
The Iron Balls/Star Fists are literally among the best strength weapons in the game
@@hoodiegal bare fists
Well yeah, any weapon is better than no weapon, obviously.
