The name dowry only comes to appear when there is a dispute between two parties otherwise it is called gift or custom or even called love offering. You have to think in all the aspects. Our politicians, rich people and religious leaders made it as a norm. Even our ancestors especially if you are the parent of boy's side. No one will deny a monetary benefit if it offered. Now it became a strong unavoidable circustances. Earlier women never used to work and get paid. So parents used to set aside some money as a support for meeting the immediate demands while starting their daughters family

Tail end: Usually during marriage parish priests (not all of them) demand huge money saying to support poor families. Nobody ask the account where it goes.. Not even inform the person who made the payment..

Some people give to showoff and willingly.later some problem occur in marriages thet later name it as dowry. Dont give anything in marriage .Let the properties of men should not asked also later in marriage in breakdown. Everyone earn on their own and live .why depend on others for your survival.
In Shahana’s case, the police had found that she might have committed suicide immediately as she found her boy friend blocked her contact. So it is clear that her boy friend did not go after her and torture her demanding dowry. Then how come the society put the full blame on the groom’s family for the reason of dowry…

There has been a similar case in which a man named Baburaj committed suicide after finding out his wife was cheating on him. Her side of relatives looted his money and she also alienated him from his child. Their video was viral in social media. But most people were defending the women saying it's her choice and sexual freedom while mocking at the man's tragedy calling him a coward because he committed suicide.

In Hinduism marriage is a sanskar (Sacrament) and the couple with the blessings of the elders Unites in order to help each other attain the four goals with the ultimate aim being God realisation and moksha.
There is no question of demanding and forcing money from someone that's not part of the Hindu faith. Infact In my personal experience I have seen pandits advising parents to not look for the dowry or wealth of the groom in deciding marriages and look for the qualities of the bride and groom. It's just people for their own selfishness use the name of religion for their own greed.
And if dowry a Hindu thing then why did the catholic Portuguese give Mumbai as a dowry to the English King?
