RIP Roger Hawkins.....Joe, what a historical legacy you've preserved by interviewing these unsung musicians for posterity. Thank you!
RIP . Great post thanks
About 25 years ago my girlfriend and I took a trip to Memphis (from Baltimore),.because we wanted to see all things Elvis. As a side trip, we went to Muscle Shoals because I wanted to see if we could find the famous studio where all of those great tracks were recorded(Remember this was pre-internet) so you had to really dig deep and ask some of the locals.Sure enough, it was closed down and a bit neglected,..but there it was. Some guy saw us looking around and then kindly went and got a key and let us in. There was still old recording equipment in there,..and all we could think about was The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger,..Lynyrd Skynyrd, Roger Hawkins,..and the Swampers etc,etc rehearsing, playing, and recording right there. One of those times in life when you were just in the right place at the right time.
Lucky you
What a great memory.
Tony, just a note - the old Capricorn studio in Macon has been restored by Mercer U. Problems caused by Covid have curtailed it's use. Maybe they can get going again now.
@@mikefannon6994 When we were in Muscle Shoals we also saw Fame Studios which had just as much musical history,....and the Helen Keller museum,....which was very nice. Capricorn is another studio with so much history. Would enjoy seeing that at some point in the future.

So glad to hear that .
I remember probably one of the first times I had heard of Hawkins and Hood was when they toured and recorded with Traffic ...RIP, sad news in the music world.
Roger Hawkins' drumming is genius. He was a very wise, down to earth person who never let fame go to his head. He was a class act.
Roger, I met you 20 years ago recording at MSSS. I still remember what you told me about your struggles with tinnitus. I was a 25 year old drummer and thought I knew everything. You gave me some great advice to live by. THANK YOU sir for taking the time to sit a young man down for a lesson in humility. You are a legend! RIP
When I heard this awful news, the first thing was sadness. The second thing was 'Mustang Sally'. I've heard dozens of cover bands play this song countless times throughout the years and NONE of the drummers could ever, never, get the pocket, tight/loose that Roger had performed; there was always something missing, it never sounded 'right', it wasn't 'my' Mustang Sally. And that missing element was Roger's God given talent. Thanks for sharing, Joe.
Rest in peace, Roger. The great, Jerry Wexler said you were the best, most complete drummer ever!
That's good enough for me.!
The “Greats” are leaving the stage. And he was definitely a “Great”. God bless.
dammn... and no curtain call encore. we are losing our dinasours
@@jmack619 some times Father Time is a bastard. This is one of those times.
That groove of his will live forever.
I look back on my youth and realize just how much I took for granted. The music.....the music remains because “we” won’t let it die. The people that created it, well....that’s beyond our control.
One by one the losses mount and the remaining greats dwindle. I’ve never had ANY musical ability beyond knowing what I like. I wished I had been aware of the talented individuals that collectively have created the soundtrack that has been my life. Thanks to Joe and this channel I’m able to truly appreciate so much of the music and the musicians I took for granted.
Hood & Hawkins- the real engine room providing the groove for so much great music. RIP Roger Hawkins.
It's really sad that our known and unknown music heroes are leaving us....but it's my and others' belief that there is and will be a great concert in heaven when we get there. Thanks Joe for thinking of doing these interviews back then and not knowing what "gold" you might end up with.
Oh man, prayers and condolences to Rodger's family. Just last night I was coming home from work blasting AF's The Weight. I grew up on that music and have continued to listen and admire it. I acquired the Duane Allman Anthology in high school and have always been blown away that those young country guys created some of the heaviest soul ever. What a loss.
A legend....
I just don't have the time to press all the thumbs - up for all the comments and love everyone is sharing.
Love Roger Hawkins! He was a force and locked so well into the spirit of the Muscle Shoals sound.
RIP Roger Hawkins. Conolences ...... What a Player!
My Grandmother would take care of Roger while his mother was at work. He was about 14 years older than me. I'v wondered if he used a drumstick on my head occasionally. You know, how young kids make it rough on the younger ones.
Condolences Joe. He's gone, but his legacy, will endure. I know you've lost a friend. But as I told my 7 yr old Granddaughter, (who begged me to never die) "Any time you think of that person, they will live in your heart." (My name is Gil by the way, Blues In G Music is my publishing company,[after an old Lonnie Johnson instrumental]. Blessings.
Something doesn't sound right on a Paul Simon," hit to be," called kodachrome. Is there chaos and worry in the studio? Well, Roger picks up a cracker box and uses it as a drum and millions of people buy it. Just another day for Roge and the guys.
God Bless Roger and his family. His drumming will live on forever.
RIP Mr. Hawkins... A great talent gone with a history that's amazing...
This guy played on more hit records ...WOW
Don't forget his time drumming for Steve Winwood and Traffic!
Joe thanks for sharing this sad news. I am sorry for the loss of your Dear Friend. Prayers for all that knew & loved him❣
Thanks Lucky..... Joe
Such sad news. Roger was one of the all-time great drummers of any genre.
and a very nice guy also
RIP Roger Hawkins...My condolences, Joe, to you, Roger, his friends/family and to Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section bassist David Hood, who is now the last surviving Swamper. Thoughts/prayers to everyone who knew Roger Hawkins best. And Mr. Hawkins, if you're listening from up above, your all-time best performance would have to be the hypnotic drumming on Land Of 1000 Dances.
Rest in Peace, Roger. You were a legend and your work lives on.
R.I.P. Thanks for the Drums on "land of a thousand dances."
What an incredible legacy Mr Hawkins leaves. Rip
What a legend, played on so many classics. Seemed like such a nice guy. RIP
Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Duane Skydog Allman all were helped by Roger and the Swampers by the Singing River.
What great music they produced.
RIP Roger. I got to visit the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on Jackson Highway when I lived in Alabama a few years back, and the tour guide shared your background. Amazing, blown away, in awe of you and the other swampers accomplishments.
It’s a shame we all have to go someday... R.I.P...
A heartfelt tribute, Joe. Roger...certainly one of the greats. His performances will last longer than all of us. And that’s a good thing. Any of us would be blessed to leave that kind of legacy.
RIP Roger Hawkins. His 'pocket' will live on in all those great songs.
THE pocket man probably the best session drummer who ever lived , one only needs to listen to the Aretha Franklin sides he cut
Just incredible feel
Jesus wept
Thanks gibson.... Joe
RIP My Friend ❤
I hate to read this....Roger Hawkins was such a wonderful man, musician and heck of fine person.
Thank you Roger.... You left the world a better place.
Great ‘Souls’ of the ‘Earth’ Passing on Thru 🌎 #Rip
Like so many other studio musicians, his name is not known by the masses. But the great music he made is known by millions. RIP Mr. Hawkins. Your music will last forever.
My deepest thoughts prayers and condolences for his family. I have watched your interviews on Roger a few times. He was very cool. 🙏
RIP Roger Hawkins. The music will live forever. Prayers 🙏 for your family and friends ❤️.
Dang. What a loss. One of my favorite drummers that I didn’t know til years later. Greasy Groove. From all the videos I’ve seen, he appears to be a great guy. RIP.
Legend! Thank you Roger!
R.I.P. Roger, you will remain an inspiration for many of us.
I'm really sorry to hear about the passing of Roger Hawkins, a great Drummer and musician who had played on many hit records! Jerry Wexler from Atlantic Records said himself that Roger is " a great drummer "! Nuff said!!! He played on " I'll Take You There " by The Staples Singers, " Land Of A Thousand Dances" by Wilson Pickett, and " Natural Woman " by Areatha Franklin. Rest In Peace Roger and I'll playing these songs and others in your memory! 🌈🙏🏽👼
Appreciate this channel for helping me know more about Roger, and all the other incredible artists we heard on recordings but didn't really get to know.
Thank you for the grooves! Rest Easy, Roger Hawkins.
Completely gutted. Roger Hawkins is such a hero of mine. The discography is mind blowing: Percy Sledge, Paul Simon, Otis Rush, Aretha, Etta, Pickett, Little Richard, The Staple Singers, Traffic...He literally infuses everything I do as a drummer in some way. The pocket, the restraint, creative ideas, his sound and gracious southern humility. In his book "The Big Beat" Max Weinberg asked Roger how he would direct a drummer to hit the kind of groove he played on "Respect" by Aretha Franklin. His response? "Brother, lay back...and BURN!". Words to live by.
Nobody could ever duplicate what Roger did on those Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett & Percy Sledge records.....he was one of a kind! Always ready to give credit to everyone else ( Al Jackson, Bernard Purdie ) for influencing his style but he stood side by side with all of these legends with his own inimitable contributions to the history of Rhythm & Blues and rock. Rest in Power Roger and hope you’re jamming with Tommy, Jimmy, and the rest of the gang!
RIP Roger! Joe, thanks AGAIN for your love of sharing the lives of musicians!
RIP brother Roger. Hope he's backing up Jimi, Janis, Duane, and Aretha again.
His music will live on .. timeless
My gosh, that is sad to hear this morning, I learned so much about him and muscle shoals ( swampers) through your channel, I'm sorry for the loss of your friend,
Also, congratulations joe, I subbed around 13000 , I remember it well, I see you are approaching one hundred thousand, right on!!!
I don’t know if there is a heaven or hell exists, but I’ve there is a heaven … man is the house band good. Just think of this Joe, due to the dedication you have for your work, so many amazing but unsung musician hero’s have finally received some of the praise and credit that for so many years they didn’t get. That must mean so much to them. So as always, thank you for all you do Joe.
Sincere thanks Mark….. Joe
Sorry to hear this.
Roger Hawkins was one hell of a drummer, and up there with the greats like Benny Benjamin and the rest of the Motown drummers (Uriel Jones & Richard 'Pistol' Allen), Al Jackson and Chess records Maurice White to name a few.
There will be one hell of a session upstairs right now!
He was right up there with the Funk Brothers for sure.
Greetings of peAce, Joe,Roger will always be in our heart...its very tearful to watch the great guys pass..Joe,know this..your in my prayers daily..may love keep us...💜👑

Joe keep on doing your interviews.
Take for instance the case of Johnny Nash
This Houston native has never participated in an in-depth interview
He passed in the latter half of 2020 at age 80
One of the greatest ever.
❤️ thank you JOe Chambers for sharing this beautiful honor of Mr. Hawkins created with love, admiration and respect. He was a master of his craft and trade. We have heard him on so many songs we have loved dearly through time and still his legacy will be heard forever ❤️ Iconic

BRIT, HOPE YOU CAN FIND SOME ONE WHO CAN FILL JOE'S SHOES
Hey Ken,
I talked to Dad about UA-cam and he was happy to leave it as is, in regards to the interviews that he did. He left it up to me and my husband Alex to figure out if we want to do anything else that would benefit the viewers and the museum. I’m sure we will get some different content in the future… know that Dad really appreciated his friends here on the channel, and all your support.
Best,
Britt
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum ❤️ go Britt ❤️ the content your wonderful Dad left us is priceless. Many of the videos I watch over and over again. We sure loved your Dad…now you got us

Yet another class act musician leaves the band. Deepest sympathy to all of Roger's family and friends. I know how you must feel Joe & I am sorry for your loss. Be well & take care.
I'm sorry Joe. It's hard to lose a good friend. God bless you and the family.
❤️
WHAT AN AWESOME VIDEO AND WOULD PAY A KINGS RANSOM TO HAVE THESE CATS WITH "SPOONER" AND MUSCLE SHOALS HORNS DOING A CD WITH ST.PAUL AND THE BROKEN BONES
Excellent musician and great man, my condolences to you Joe and all families. All these losses you've had to endure since you started this wonderful and insightful interview series is unbelievable, stay strong and keep the faith brother.
A great drummer who showed that it’s all about feel. He was probably greeted by Duane and Aretha and many other when he got up there. “What took you Roger ? We start rehearsals soon!”
Thanks for watching Phillip... Joe
Sad. I don't know how to express my feelings about this. The loss is more than just the loss of Roger. It's the bit by bit loss of an era. George asked, "Who's gonna fill their shoes?" My answe is, no one. They'll remain empty because the world and the conditions that helped foment Roger and those like him are gone. The bright side is the record created by MHOF allowing the world an opportunity to peek into the heart of music as it was. Thanks, Joe.
Legend.
The drumming on Aretha's RESPECT deserves serious respect. Vale Roger.
Thanks Mick.... Joe
R,I.P. Roger and Thank you! You took us there.
A very heartfelt tribute...
He and Barry Beckett produced the soul classic by Mel & Tim

Very sad news RIP Roger🥲
RIP
Where does that great talent go? R.I.P.
Saw him with Traffic in 73
Very sad to read of his passing, I used to buy LP'S using the session players as a check list. If any of these guys were on it you knew it would be good .
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 134 fan..... sincerely, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thanks.
A little shout out to a pretty good guitarist who was very familiar with the Shoals....Slow hand himself, Eric Clapton. Near the end of Rogers's run as a performer, Clapton called Roger to play on a very cool song called. I'v Got a Rock and roll Heart. Once again , Roger gave it that certain something that you can only get in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and once again, millions bought it. Roger, Jimmy, Barry.and Pete
Behave yourselves for a change or we will tell Joe Cocker where you are at! 😉😄
Thanks for sharing Ken.... Best, Joe
