I have no idea how many of these stories I’ve watched, But they have never let me down. Time moves on and people change. But the reality and the magic that came from these memories will inspire musicians for years to come.
Lucky enough to see Bob Seager early 80s , a few more times later and then right at the end of his career. Unlike a lot of other seasoned singers his voice was still great. Fond memories for sure
The man, the myth, the legend. One of the greatest poets, musicians of all time. Loves how he keeps his private life private. He has my greatest respect forever
Joe, thanks so much for your interesting and entertaining Musicians Hall of Fame video series. And I too know Forrest McDonald. My son owns 2 breweries in the Richmond Va area. We pride ourselves on brewing excellent beer and providing outstanding musical entertainment. Steam Bell Beer Works has hosted The Forrest McDonald Band a dozen or more times in the last 4 years. Forrest is an outstanding blues guitarist and the entire band is wonderful. They always play Old Time Rock & Roll and Forrest tells the story just as y’all did, usually midway through the second set. Never tire of him telling his Muscle Shoals experience on such a classic Rock & Roll hit.
Love Bob Seger. I really liked what he did with Glenn Fry back in the day, helped bring the Eagles to Stardom. I didn't know that Seger was as involved with the Swampers as these clips highlight. I'm probably most impressed with the overall history of what these guys did up in Muscle Shoals back in the day. I didn't know about Cher, Duane and the countless others who knew where to go to make the best recording. I was turned on to the Swampers when I heard the Lynyrd Skynrd vocals tooting the horn for the Swampers at Muscle Shoals on Sweet Home Alabama. I was blown away when I started researching it and found out just what the guys at Muscle Shoals had accomplished and I just love the story about all of it. When I was a kid, a buddy of mine and I would head up to north Alabama and hang out at Little River Canyon and jam with our acoustic guitars, we'd play the songs as best we could back then, had no idea that the studio was over in Muscle Shoals, if we had I know we'd have been at the back door of the control room peeking in and getting yelled at for doing so! I want to thank all the crew at Muscle Shoals for just being there when the world needed you to be and thank you for all the amazing music that rolled out of that studio over the years. I don't know if you guys know how big an impact you've made on the music scene. It certainly wouldn't be the same without you guys! I'm a southern boy by birth and a long time guitarist, I always loved the back stories of my favorite bands and recording studios. I'm also very fond of the Studio in the Country right outside Bogalusa, LA, about 30 miles from my location today, like Muscle Shoals a lot of quality famous records we produced there, would loved to have been a fly on the wall back then. The other small recording studio on my top list of 3 would be Robin Hood Studios in Tyler, TX where ZZ Top recorded their first and second albums.
I was lukewarm back in the day. Maybe there was just too much radio play. Then I saw him live on his last tour... one of the best rock shows I've ever been to.
Bob Seger holds a special place in my heart. he is a true gentlemen and one of the best musicians I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.. First off, let me say how happy it makes me to know there are guys like you who took the time and are making the effort of putting down the history of the music that has been so important during my lifetime. You have provided so many incredible backstories which could have very easily fallen by the wayside, or worse, might have ended up fragmented and unclear causing endless debate among the so called self proclaimed "experts" of music history. Your presentations come straight from the participants own mouths. I'll always be grateful that you, for whatever reason, had the foresight to gather all of this incredible information from the people who lived and participated in so much of the history during this period of time. If I wouldn't have to commit so many crimes to do so, I would love to give you a home site next to the railroad tracks down in Sandy Hook, Tennessee that you could at least sell, but don't give up yet because I might win the lotto, providing you with needed resources and of course keep myself out of jail. Out of all the channels on U-Tube, yours is my favorite. I just can't thank you enough, yet, but I'm going to keep trying.
William... hey man... I appreciate your comments and thoughts... yes ... please don’t do anything to place you in jail:) ... If you hit the lottery then I’ll take you up on some support for the museum:).... All the best... Joe
I knew Forrest (Howie) McDonald in high school. I had heard the wild tale that he played on Old Time Rock N Roll, but i never had any corroborating evidence till now and like they pointed out, he wasn't credited on the album. As you might expect, i don't think i have ever met anyone so confident and gung ho to be a successful musician as Forrest. He used to have a very tall Fender amp stack in the 60's that he needed a stool in front of so he could reach the top controls. Though at one time i doubted the story was true cos it sounded so fantastic, The Swampers have erased all doubt.
These amazing stories by the Swampers are golden Joe! I always knew that Seger was a class act & this video proves it in spades! Letting that kid at the back door come in to play is just over the top incredible. 👍👍👏👏😉😉
Brilliant interview Joe, it never ceases to amaze me how things seem to find away, I’m a firm believer that certain things are meant to be. Hope your safe and well, take care from a rainy Chesterfield in the UK..❤️
Love this segment and the Seger story. I had never heard the part about the intro being a mistake. That's too cool! Being from just across the state line in MS I always enjoy the stories about these guys. Over the years I've ran into many of them at some time or another in and around Muscle Shoals. My favorite guitar shop is there. Thanks Joe. You interviews never disappoint.
It really is a magical place... I didn't really appreciate it til returning to N AL and learning the history of the recording studios, meeting & hearing local musicians, etc. Love this series as well as the movie, MUSCLE SHOALS. It's free on YT now if you haven't seen it. Can't wait to see Aretha.
Good to hear Seger was one of the good guys! Sad that fiduciary integrity is rare, greed is a powerful human instinct, unfortunately. Glad there are still good ones out there who honor even handshake agreements.
When I was a kid I loved BS and assumed he was a Southerner. It was strange to me to learn that he was from Detroit. This explains my childhood confusion. It's a little bit embarrassing for a music fan from Alabama to admit not knowing about his connection to Muscle Shoals and the Swampers. If there is a bigger testament to the value and importance of the arts in education than the Swampers I would love to see it!
Outstanding documentary proof of the the Swampers legacy, thanks Joe. If nothing else, the gentleman's agreement that Bob Seger honored to this very day is worth the watch. Thanks again Joe!
Joe, your superpower is the ability to have your guests feel so completely at ease, that they’ll tell great stories that they normally wouldn’t open up about. You are the Zen Interviewer, as you don’t have to say a word and musicians trust you like an old friend of theirs.
Very cool! I've never really thought about the ''false' piano intro x2 of 'Old Time Rock & Roll'. Yep ... the timing after riff 1 is odd but it fits perfectly. Reminds me of a pause going up the first hill of a rollercoaster... the empty space just kind of hangs a bit. Love it! Now we know the story behind it. Great interview!
Well put! I never knew that before, either. But it works. Fortunately, much great art can be created from mistakes and accidents. Grateful for Bob sticking with his gut instinct and testing it with an audience, too! ❤️
My husband and I always hit the dance floor on "Old Time and Rock" every time whomever played it! Jerry and I loved these times and a lot of the other dancers gave the floor to us and everyone watched us! Great memories! Also we loved Alto Reed!
At 6:30 Jimmy (I think it's Jimmy) talks about Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock and Roll', and the double intro which seems to have been an accident/false start. No problem, the record wouldn't be the same without that false start 👍
What a great story! That was so cool to hear all the incidents that took place. Stuff like that just happens and probably will never happen again. Thanks again Joe for an outstanding interview. You never disappoint. This is hands down the best channel on UA-cam.
Leslie.... thank you so much... I really appreciate you and others who’ve said the nicest things... I’m glad you’re enjoying watching our videos....I enjoyed making them too... best, Joe
I may have seen this before, but it never gets old. Thanks for posting! Sadly, we've lost too many of our Shoals music family in recent years (RIP)... Which makes videos like this even more special. Little pieces of history, music heritage, and sweet memories for surviving family and friends. Many thanks, Joe! ❤️
Great story Joe; would love to hear more stories from these legendary musicians, especially their work with Traffic and other rock bands. There was something about a chauffer also? Thanks.
First of all ,well done , this is wonderful stuff .It is interesting hearing the guys talking about musician credits, I devoured the liner notes on albums when they finally got around to acknowledging the players . When I was at high school my band were learning the Wilson Pickett version of Land of 1,000 Dances , and Roger's iconic beats during the ' huhhh , Na , nananana ... 'bit really alluded my 15 year old brain . I always assumed it was a black guy propelling that irresistible feel , an Earl Palmer, a Clyde Stubblefield , I was almost shocked to find out the Swampers were all white chaps . I still love that record and mastering the syncopated kick push moved my drumming up a notch . Great hearing Mr Hawkins talking about his first kit , I started off with a basic Sonor kick and snare , but had Hi Hats as well , then the rack tom , then a floor tom ... My parents were resigned to it by then and my dad loaned me the money to buy a proper ride cymbal and bought me the stand to put it on . 70 now , still playing .
Hi Wee… many people assumed the Swampers were black musicians including Paul Simon:) The truth is regardless of the color of their skin all these guys grew up together side-by-side in the deep South…… black or white made their money picking cotton …..for real. It was a lifestyle. They felt the same hard times and poverty as their black friends and it came out in their music. Thanks for watching…. Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I grew up in New Zealand 50s and 60s , and apart from English music publications like the Melody Maker and New Musical Express , we really had no idea what was happening anywhere . Radio was run by the government in the Brit BBC manner and was a little wary of too much rock and/or roll. I probably became aware of Muscle Shoals through the Stones talking to journalists. As kids we swapped any information about the ' real music ' like holy writ . I teach a bunch of kids the art of drums, it is a big part of it to know where it comes from . Thanks for your invaluable resource . The Nashville stuff was great , but this digs right into the heart of where my influences are .
That's good stuff Joe, I saw Bob Seger while stationed at Ft. Campbell back in the mid 70s. Right there at municipal auditorium. I saw some good shows there. keep these good stories coming, Thanks
This song always takes me back to when I was a kid probably 10. My family would go to Greeco's Pizza in Bedford IN and my Brother and I would ALWAYS pick this song in the jukebox as one of our four for a quarter. Oh the memories it brings back I can NEVER forget that it is a part of my soul!!!!!
Great interview! Thanks so much for doing this! I have always wanted to see something on MSRS and Seger! Couple things off. Heavy Music was his 1st hit in D. Old Time RR is and was not an encore song lol Actually Old Time RR was the number one song played on Juke Boxes before they went digital!!! AND Seger rewrote the Entire song except the title from what Bob says. Silver bullets' were Very pissed about not being on the albums but Bob wanted it done certain ways and to have more control. I like Punch as a person decent guy but he kept seger from selling twice as many albums as he could. Of course he did not know things on recording albums he was a club owner that way over achieved but did more wrong than good for Bob in my eyes same with Capital and the lady that handled his pretty much whole career there(can't remember her name) again Very nice lady talked with her once for like an hour. and had to bite my tongue the whole time. Seger is a musical genius on writing, arranging and Performing! With the right manager and record company he would have sold 150 mil not 70 though. The swampers also Amazing group of guys and very much part of the seger sound!! I saw Seger 26 times on his last tour half of those front row, backstage few times and partied with the band many times.Even ran into Bob himself twice and will tell you he could not possibly be a nicer fellow. He even remembered me from the Milwaukee show when I messed him up making him laugh during like a rock lol
Strange and funny how things work out. Coincidences don't just happen, there supposed to happen. Even the smallest thing can change one's life for better or worse. I love these stories. Thanks for this

Being from just across the state line in MS I always enjoy the stories about these guys. Over the years I've ran into many of them at some time or another in and around Muscle Shoals. My favorite guitar shop is there. Thanks Joe. You interviews never disappoint.
Thank you 1515.... joe
Thanks Joe, the Swampers are a great bunch of guys! Howie has a great story to share at every gig he plays!💫
Howie was a lucky guy.. joe
Great stories, Joe. Thank you.
Glad you’re enjoying them Bill.... joe
I appreciate your love towards my music hope you don’t stop liking my aspirations
Good to hear Seger was one of the good guys! Sad that fiduciary integrity is rare, greed is a powerful human instinct, unfortunately. Glad there are still good ones out there who honor even handshake agreements.
Seger is known to be one of the nicest guys in the business. Never forgot his midwestern roots!

*IS, not was!
Love the Swampers thanks Joe them cats could ROCK
Joe, yet another FANTASTIC interview. Wow. Literally hanging on every word, every detail...which you expertly guide them through. History.
Hi Miles... that’s very kind... best... joe
I really appreciate your love and support towards my aspirations, how long have you been my fan
Top shelf again Joe. I always thought Bob should have been as big as ' the boss'. Love them both.🇮🇪
Thanks Rob... joe
The reaction channels are discovering him and being blown away by his artistry daily.
Outstanding documentary proof of the the Swampers legacy, thanks Joe. If nothing else, the gentleman's agreement that Bob Seger honored to this very day is worth the watch. Thanks again Joe!
Thank you too Tom... joe
This channel is a joy to watch.
Thanks Mac....I appreciate it... Joe
Joe, your superpower is the ability to have your guests feel so completely at ease, that they’ll tell great stories that they normally wouldn’t open up about. You are the Zen Interviewer, as you don’t have to say a word and musicians trust you like an old friend of theirs.
Thanks G....I hope they do feel like my friends because they definitely are friends to me. Best, Joe
Thanks for watching and supporting our channel Stephen... Best, Joe
Well put! I never knew that before, either. But it works. Fortunately, much great art can be created from mistakes and accidents. Grateful for Bob sticking with his gut instinct and testing it with an audience, too! ❤️
I appreciate your love towards my music hope you don’t stop liking my aspirations
" Hey Buddy, can i HEP ya?" Lol. Love it.
Johnson-Hawkins-Hood "wild rock 'n' rollers!"
love bob Seger so much I have Night Moves and Nine Tonight on Vinyl
My husband and I always hit the dance floor on "Old Time and Rock" every time whomever played it! Jerry and I loved these times and a lot of the other dancers gave the floor to us and everyone watched us! Great memories! Also we loved Alto Reed!
And that's the rest of the story.
Joe!! We love what you do, man. Thanks so much for all your enthusiasm and hard work 👍🏼
Thanks vids... I enjoy sharing them with people like you... joe
Totally fascinating and wonderful. Thank you Joe.
Thanks a lot Al.... Joe
Love these back stories, Joe! Great stuff. Thanks!!!!
Thanks for watching Rodney... joe
Once again a great story thank you so much😎
At 6:30 Jimmy (I think it's Jimmy) talks about Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock and Roll', and the double intro which seems to have been an accident/false start.
I’m glad you’re enjoying watching our videos....I enjoyed making them too... best, Joe
Great music came out of Muscle Shoals thanks to the Swampers .
I love hearing stories like these 👍
My favorite song is still East Side Story by Seger .. his first single he ever did
Great story Joe; would love to hear more stories from these legendary musicians, especially their work with Traffic and other rock bands. There was something about a chauffer also? Thanks.
Thanks GG....joe
Where can I hear the original demo version?
What a great story ! Thanks
Thanks Midas.. joe
This was great, I never Roger Hawkins played drums on some of Bob’s classic record’s
About half of the mid 70s to early 80s stuff. I think until The Distance.
Wow!! Fascinating. Love the song and now I know the story behind it.. Thanks!!
Thank you Jimmy..... Joe
That's good stuff Joe, I saw Bob Seger while stationed at Ft. Campbell back in the mid 70s. Right there at municipal auditorium. I saw some good shows there. keep these good stories coming, Thanks

Bob is an amazing artist
This song always takes me back to when I was a kid probably 10. My family would go to Greeco's Pizza in Bedford IN and my Brother and I would ALWAYS pick this song in the jukebox as one of our four for a quarter. Oh the memories it brings back I can NEVER forget that it is a part of my soul!!!!!
Great story....love this thanks.

@@spacecatboy2962 You ARE a space cowboy! lol.
Bob is ALIVE!!!💖
Dan.....Thanks for sharing .....Joe
Strange and funny how things work out. Coincidences don't just happen, there supposed to happen. Even the smallest thing can change one's life for better or worse. I love these stories. Thanks for this
You are so right Marty... you would not believe some of the “things” that happened to me along the way.... still! Best... Joe
