It’s heartwarming to hear Stephen speak so warmly and affectionately about David. I spent a while touring with Stephen, David, and Graham. It was a musical wonderland, with many surprises and a super happy crowd every night. Personally, it was a lot, with three vastly different personalities that sometimes made me wonder how they could ever pull a show together each night. Age is being very kind to David and Stephen. Incredibly good interview . It is amazing how many famous RnR people and situations he was close to and involved in and it’s all true! He was absolutely the best musician in CSNY…
Great interview! The only thing lacking that I am a little disappointed in is there was nothing said about Manasas. That is one of the all-time great bands. The double album is amazing. And I got to see them live. They were the most under rated band.
Great interview. Stills is just so honest & direct. One of the greatest songwriters of my generation and any "Top 100 guitar players of the blah blah blah" that doesn't feature him somewhere in the top 5 is (IMHO) immediately suspect. One of the first records I bought with my own money was Buffalo Springfield Again. I was immediately drawn to Everydays, Rock & Roll Woman and Bluebird. They stood out to me. Which coincidentally were all his. Such a soulful singer.. The plumber's wife taught him well
Stephen is my favorite singer/songwriter/guitarist. Although I like CSN(Y) and Buffalo Springfield, his band Manassas was my favorite. What a killer group and Stephen was at the height of his songwriting power. I wish they would have made some more albums together. I also love his solo work and more recently his records as the band The Rides (with Kenny Wayne Sheppard).
Thank you so much for this. I love Stephen and all his work. It was a joy and its a long time since I've seen an interviewer worthy of speaking to genius. Brilliant. J
I have seen him solo, with csn twice. The stills, young band, and csn&y 3 times. He is a fantastic musician. Great songs, great vocals great guitar playing. He was never once disappointing live.
He played a solo show at the University of Washington in the early 70's. He was very unsteady and fell into the drum kit. His next time through Seattle he joked about it.

Super Session. Stills performing "Season of the Witch." People talk about Jimi on the wah-wah pedal, but no one talks about Stills. This is a guitar lesson.
Wow, I never knew this existed and I’m a big fan. Boy that’s a side of Stills I’ve never seen. He is a all around complete Musician. He has a incredible amount of Guitar work that is second to none. Maybe the most work in Rock History as we know it. Electric and Acoustic work. Folk, Rock, Funky Melodic Recordings. Then his Vocal talents. One of my favorite Musicians. I feel so fortunate to have seen him live at least 15 to 20 easily.
Very enlightening interview. One thing about Stills, he is very diplomatic. He could have come down hard on Crosby, like Graham Nash has done, but he demurred. He could have mentioned that "Manassas" was virtually shelved by Ahmet Ertegun to hold out for another CSN album, which Atlantic saw as a cash cow, but he didn't. Class act.
I saw Stephen Stills twice, he blew me away, he played “For what it’s Worth” in a blistering lead guitar, that was so good, in Redding Calif, then saw him play acoustically with Judy Collins, again excellent! The songs he has written, his playing talent, a real class guy, the interview was really have to respect him!
I saw a limousine and Stephens Stills on 6th Ave... Tacoma. I first song, and a song remembered him. Harmonic notes ! Then I rode a limousine Jerry Miller (from Moby Grape), Stephen Stills and my limousine. Then I met Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Backstage. ;-)
Can't believe the omission of Steve's early solo work that was arguably his best work during that time. So glad Stephen confirms my feeling for Mr. Soul.
You can say what you want to about the man. But the proof was in the pudding at wood stock. One man and his guitar, three voices blended in perfect harmony.
Everyone knows Stephen Stills is fabulous. At this point, the country didn't know Bob Costas was fabulous. An exceptional interview is an understatement.
this guy had and continues to make huge impressions on me as a singer and guitar player - I first understood his greatness watching CSN on public television ( Austin City Limits) in the mid 80s on a 16" black and white tv - And as a professional horseman I know he loves horses and dude can ride !
Hi George i saw them in London and still play that album they were fantastic live,Steve on a big white Gretch and white grand piano ! Love them all Neil & CSN got abd still play them and take them on holiday every year on an ipod with Steely Dan etc
A lot of people hate David Geffen but I thank God everyday for him because he brought me my beloved Eagles and these three gentlemen to profoundly change who I was going to become in a way that I love so much.
I can add to what Stephen brought to the group, and that is soul. Listen to the "southern preacher" vibe on "49 Bye-byes" off of 4 Way Street for a particularly strong example of that. This was awesome, thanks!
Of all the favorite groups and singers I listened to, all the favorites of mine since the early 60s, Stephen Stills is the one that would leave a hole in my musical experience if I had never heard him.
Steven Stills is a flat-out genius of rock 'n roll. The first CSN album is as great as it is because his multi-insrtumental talent brought it into being. With "For What It's Worth" alone, Mr. Stills would have his place in history, but explore his entire catalog through Manassas and beyond to his superb solo albums and be amazed, uplifted and educated about the sheer influence this artist has had on our culture.
@Stephen Stills I have to agree that Hung Upside Down is a great song! I have many of your albums and listen them on vinyl. You are truly an influence. Thank you for your great music!
Bob unbeknownst to some people is a great interviewer and does a wonderful job with Stephen getting him to open up a little about how he thinks and what he does . Some of my favorite stuff he has done are off Man Alive and Stills Alone . Thanks for the video
I grew up with C.S.N. & Y.! Simply a HUGE part of our youth & adult music appreciation lifetimes. They have evolved with the times; put sweetness; intensity; & story-telling into a harmonious mix of audio entertainment! Weavers of fables that illustrated the times we've endured, enjoyed, & marveled at. Wonderful tunes from terrific guys! Way cool! * Cav *
I was a 13-year old music-smacked kid in 1970. All I wanted to be was Stephen Stills. His music carried me from one day to the next, marinated my guitar. That coat he wears on the CSN album cover, on the front porch........I had a jacket just like it. Wore it 'til you could READ through it.
Stephen is great. He is a good guy overall. I was told he went to highschool with Jum Strafford, Graham Parsons, and Lobo. Imagine that session on the grass
Fantastic! Wonderful interview of an awesome musician by an educated and thoughtful interviewer. I just happened on this one with Stills -- now I have to go listen to all the Bob Costa interviews I can find.
And Stephen: craftsman, team player, catalyst, and all-around stand-up guy. He writes songs the way he talks--direct, here it is, no mysteries, next question, please.
I've always admired Stephen's musicality, but his humility and humor are really something else, and I'm really glad to have seen this interview. May he live long and prosper.
There are no words to explain the love I have had for this man since the late 60s. It's funny, I have always loved his thumbs.

Backstage. ;-)
He is SO underrated. I've been a fan since Springfield days and expect to remain so.
Can't believe the omission of Steve's early solo work that was arguably his best work during that time. So glad Stephen confirms my feeling for Mr. Soul.
So candid and sweet❤
You can say what you want to about the man. But the proof was in the pudding at wood stock. One man and his guitar, three voices blended in perfect harmony.
Everyone knows Stephen Stills is fabulous. At this point, the country didn't know Bob Costas was fabulous. An exceptional interview is an understatement.
loved this interview.
this guy had and continues to make huge impressions on me as a singer and guitar player - I first understood his greatness watching CSN on public television ( Austin City Limits) in the mid 80s on a 16" black and white tv -
And as a professional horseman I know he loves horses and dude can ride !
I also love them & horses ! ❤️❤️🌹🌹🧚🏼🧚🏿♂️🧚♀️✌️👽🪐😉😊🥰🧚🏼🧜🧜♂️🧜♀️😍love all these guys ! Especially the song 4 dead in Ohio !
I saw Mannasess in SA way back and they were amazing. It was a complete concert by them alone and wonderful
Hi George i saw them in London and still play that album they were fantastic live,Steve on a big white Gretch and white grand piano ! Love them all Neil & CSN got abd still play them and take them on holiday every year on an ipod with Steely Dan etc
i saw Manassas several times. Stills was a phenomenon.
I saw them at the university of North Carolina
Love ya Stephen. Go for it. I'll buy it.
Saw C.S.N 7 times. Last time with Young.
Love ya, Jewels
A lot of people hate David Geffen but I thank God everyday for him because he brought me my beloved Eagles and these three gentlemen to profoundly change who I was going to become in a way that I love so much.
Real decent guy, phenomenal musician and writer
I remember seeing this when it aired. Thanks for posting. Stills is one of all-time greats.
I can add to what Stephen brought to the group, and that is soul. Listen to the "southern preacher" vibe on "49 Bye-byes" off of 4 Way Street for a particularly strong example of that. This was awesome, thanks!
That version was a life changer for me
@@haroldmessinger1 , me too! :)
I'm impressed with Mr. Stills intelligence.
Stephen was the main pillar a Buffalo Springfield, CSN+Y and still is at CSN. A shout out to Bob Costas' great work in journalism.
He really is excellent outside of just sports reporting
Never saw this in my 53 year's but glad I did now. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for the upload.
When I was a kid I had that Steven stills solo album
Still love it
Of all the favorite groups and singers I listened to, all the favorites of mine since the early 60s, Stephen Stills is the one that would leave a hole in my musical experience if I had never heard him.
Thank you so much for sharing this gem with us. Love it!
A great interview...happy to share
@Stephen Stills wow! Thank you for all the great music Mr. Stills!!!
Man Alive is a great album
Love Stills. And, an insider who knew Hiphop was the new RockNRoll when others couldn't see it. Great interview of a great artist. Thank you
Listen to Manassas and you’ll get a full picture of the man’s talent. He gathered all those players together and they made great music.
Scary how talented Stephen Stills is!!
…..and handsome too !
Way cool! * Cav *
bob costas is the best interviewer. this was fun to watch!
100% my fave
I was a 13-year old music-smacked kid in 1970. All I wanted to be was Stephen Stills. His music carried me from one day to the next, marinated my guitar. That coat he wears on the CSN album cover, on the front porch........I had a jacket just like it. Wore it 'til you could READ through it.
Stephen is a wonderful fucking genius and I love his work.
Stephen is great. He is a good guy overall. I was told he went to highschool with Jum Strafford, Graham Parsons, and Lobo. Imagine that session on the grass
Fantastic viewing of this musical genius thanks.
Fantastic! Wonderful interview of an awesome musician by an educated and thoughtful interviewer.
I just happened on this one with Stills -- now I have to go listen to all the Bob Costa interviews I can find.

My favorite Buffalo Springfield song was Bluebird. Stephen's acoustic guitar jam is just so good.
I know exactly what you mean... I never tire of it at all... So much feel and confidence.
If I were to point to one song that is the definitive Stills voice it’s Bluebird .
This man can write sailing instructions as poetry and a saga!
And Stephen: craftsman, team player, catalyst, and all-around stand-up guy. He writes songs the way he talks--direct, here it is, no mysteries, next question, please.
thank you for this upload
