  • This video was shot at the Midland Ave railroad crossing in Elmwood Park, New Jersey
    While railfanning Plauderville Station with my buddy Alex, we headed down to the NYS&W Tracks to see the SU-99, on the way back, we stopped to get a few trains at this crossing.
    This is New Jersey's most dangerous railroad crossing, due to the angle in which the tracks cross over the road. There have been improvements over the last year in the form of new traffic lights that stop cars from crossing the tracks when a train is approaching, but they can only do so much, and yes even after the lights were installed, there were a few accidents between car and train here. But the lights do help alot
    Crossing Info:
    Signal #1: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with LEDs. A Safetran Gate Motor and a Safetran mechanical bell
    Signal #2: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights with LEDs. A WC Hayes Gate Motor and a Safetran mechanical bell
    This crossing is located on NJ Transit's Bergen County Line
    Enjoy!

      Thank You Mike!
      Yea i know, when the light went red, there was a good amount of time between that and the gates lowering, i thought he was gonna run it, but he stayed which im glad.

      Freedomtower Productions honestly for Midland Ave and Market Street, they could depress them into an underpass if they were to do one after the other. But the time imbetween would be hell. This area is the hardest to work with when it comes to eliminating crossings for safer alternative becuase they need it here so badly.

    The funny thing is, in Illinois we also have an Elmwood Park that has a dangerous railroad crossing. GenesisSanctuary did a video of a nearby pedestrian signal.

    The traffic light at 1:12 should be having a left green arrow to help traffic move

    Please refrain from using words in your title that might perhaps make us think we are seeing 3 trains through one video. Like a 3 track crossing.mi didn't think it would be 3 separate segments. Still though nice catches. I did like the video

    What's the idea behind the goofy strobes that sit atop the main standards, and that flash a moment before the crossing lights activate? Seen these on some (but not all?) other New Jersey crossings/videos.

      I believe that they're there for emergency vehicles. Since it seems that the passenger trains aren't moving that fast, and given the length of the time the gates are down, then those strobes will read a signal from emergency vehicles will slow if not stop passenger trains. Consequently if there's an injured person, or fire, and the emergency vehicles don't always have to wait for trains, as long as they stop on the left lane, and then continue on without waiting for the gate to go up and traffic to clear.

      Randall, sorry, not meaning to offend, but that doesn't sound plausible to me.
      The strobes are on crossing signals where there's coordination with nearby traffic signals. If this is true, still not sure why it's needed. I've never heard elsewhere that police-fire-ambulance could put a train into instant e-stop because they wanted to use the crossing.

      Well they are on the main drag where I lived for 16 years till 3 years ago. I saw the flash and then minutes later ambulances and fire trucks went by. I asked the local sheriff, the area didn't have it's own police, but instead were covered by the county sheriff, and he told me it's so cops, knowing that emergency vehicles are coming. Therefore they can make sure that the intersection is clear.

      I have seen strobes actually in the red flashers before at a particularly bad crossing to help draw the drivers attention to the crossing signals being activated and gates on the way down. They stop strobing once the train has cleared the crossing and the gates are headed back up. That’s the only thing I know of where they would use a strobe on a crossing signal.

    They honestly have to make some studies to makes these crossings overpasses or underpasses

    • @FreedomtowerStudios
      @FreedomtowerStudios  7 років тому

      They have done alot of studies at this crossing, an overpass/underpass would be too cost worthy and time consuming, plus really no room to put one in.
      Another one was to shut down the crossing complete and re-route traffic, but that was shot down, so the only option was the traffic lights

    • @AmtrakProductions

      also overpasses suck

  • @chuckufarly5
    @chuckufarly5 7 років тому +4

    honestly, i see no need for the extra lights, you cant fix stupid, therefore there will always be someone who is just that impatient to wait and is going to try and cross anyway.

    • @FreedomtowerStudios
      @FreedomtowerStudios  7 років тому

      Your completely right, you can't fix stupid and i don't think when the officials put the traffic lights in, it would completely get rid of the danger here. It did reduce train vs car accidents dramatically from what i was told, still there are a few flaws in the system.
