I just finished removing the old pick guard from my year old Taylor 327e. Rolling off the old adhesive is time consuming and hard on your fingers, but obviously necessary. I saw in another UA-cam video that you could use naphtha to remove the remaining adhesive. I was worried that it would damage the finish of the guitar, but cautiously using it, I found it worked well and didn't hurt the finish at all. I rubbed on some lemon oil and I will wait for it to dry to put on the beautiful new pick guard.
Thanks for a great product.
Hey how did it go?!
was the area under the guard lighter in color? Im thinking of doing it for a 2019 gibson acoustic .
Naphtha rules ! It’ll excel get engine oil off Dralon/velvet ! (Used to be an upholsterer)
Just learned a lot about pick guard. Wasn’t sure how to remove it without causing further damage. Hairdryer idea is amazing. Thanks for the tips😜💪🏻
I removed the pickguard from my GS Mini without heat or chemicals. I merely stuck my finger under the narrowest point and stuck my fingernail under the pickguard. I peeled it off in about twenty seconds and then cleaned the residue with white vinegar which also took about twenty seconds. I now have a beautiful mahogany guitar with no pickguard.
So how did that work out for ya?. About to get a Taylor and well there pick guard just isint me/ just not much into that country "look". Also, the main part about it, I rarely ever use a pick with my acoustics , so yeh- there's that. Also, is the discoloration still there after a few months? anyway to get rid of it? -Cheers
very nice job mate--looks like you might have done this once or twice before
Thank you
Tim
Lemon oil won’t compromise the adhesive from the new pick guard?
Great Video! Im always looking for unique upgrades for my guitars. Im going to subscribe and check you out more.
Very helpful narrative. Thank you.
Thanks for your video. I just bought a Guild M-120 solid mahogany guitar. It is a fine little guitar, but I didn’t like the pickguard. It was actually pretty easy to remove. I covered the soundhole and the surrounding with towels, heated the pickguard and removed it. The residue could mostly be rubbed of, and the rest came of with lemon oil. There is now no trce of the pickguard and the guitar didn’t even go out of tune.
Don't most luthiers use Naptha (aka lighter fluid) to remove the glue residue?
I want to remove a pickguard on my new Sigma J200 copy (that's a big pickguard) and have seen a lot of videos on YT, where everyone uses a hair dryer. However, I have read on a forum somewhere that the heat from a hair dryer can damage the bracing, which will not be noticeable immidiately and to never apply heat, but do it very patiently with just naphtha. So, can the heat from a hair dryer loosen the bracing inside? Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial!
Wait so does a pick gaurd always lighten the wood? I'm deciding whether to put a pickguard on or not
I used goo gone. Didnt hurt the wood finish at all. Just let it soak a few minutes and use a microfiber rag.
Do you make pick guards for acoustasonic guitars ?
Hi! I have the Sigma Grand Jumbo and i am thinking of removing the pickguard..so did you remove yours ..and if you did, was there wood discoloration under the pickguard? Thanks !
Where did you get the honeycomb pickguard? It's very stylish!
I cant find the same size pick guard, i need one for a washburn . Im scared there will be a discoloration under.
Hi i have question can you change the shape of the pickguard becouse i have big one and i would like to have smaller
Thanks
Thank you Chris.
What cleaner did you use? You just said 'cleaner'. The white and blue spray bottle.
What was it?
I see the strings are off. Is that necessary? Or does it just make it a little easier. ?
Not necessary but definitely recommended.
Are yall still selling those?
So if you want to leave the pick guard off and there is a tan line left behind. is there anyway to make the color match back up?
Give it some time, it might discolor to the same?
Hey Chris, I was just cruising around looking for pick guard replacement vids to help me install my new Thalia Zircote on my Taylor 327e. Thanks so much for the perfect instructions. Also, Thanks for raising awareness to save the bees.
Will this work on sunburst finished guitars as well?
This will work on any style of finish.
Is it essential to remove the strings to do this?
Nope just loosen them a bit
What guitar is that? I want it
Taylor GS Mini Mahogany
I purchased a brand new Parlour guitar that had ,i felt a cheesy pick guard When i removed it i could see that it pulled on the wood and cracked it . The pick guard was trying to shrink . I now hate pick guards . I alway remove them now ,so the wood can breath .
very nice
Is it safe to remove the pickguard without using a hairdryer?
nope, don't do it
Appreciate the tips but my god that honeycomb guard is hideous
Not gonna lie i bet a mother of pearl pick guard would look good on my guitar lol it’s a Washburn Lyon
How to screw up the top of a guitar. Apply heat to it.
