Here is a man who has changed the nature of healthcare in our country by his commitment to affordable health to all. If there's anybody that deserves the Bharat Ratna, it is Dr. Devi Shetty. Even when I offered to return to India after my 25 years of training + practice experience in the United States and give my services in my specialty of Pediatric Nephrology, to his foundation, I was told flat out that I may have to work for almost nothing, at least in the beginning. Not only that, but I would be judged by my dedication to the cause and not by my fancy American training and background! That did unnerve me and I backed out only to be reminded by Dr. Devi Shetty that he did the same when he came back from the United Kingdom. It made me look tiny and insignificant in comparison. That is what I call devotion and sacrifice. What a man!! God bless his cause.

@@-RajgeetTalukdar I respect your view. That is why my father trusted him like God. But I have some queries from you :-
1., Have you ever heard of a doctor who recommends highly risky surgeries like AAA and CABG together with lots of fake promises without discussing any word of risk.
      2. Have you heard of any doctor who says that the operation is successful. But next day he says that another operation will have to be done because your patient has gangrene in the intestines. Amazingly there was no trace of gangrene in any of their test reports and my father had no abdominal pain or indigestion.
      3. One of his assistants told me in the ventilation that they would apply a bandage what rupees 40000/- so that the deep surgical wound in the abdomen will heal. But now I came to know from a surgeon of WB that there is no such bandage .
      4. My father died with the gory wounds of five surgeries like AAA, CABG, CHOLESTOMY, TREAKESTOMY and THORACENTESIS,.
      5. If he told us about a single word of risks in stead of fake promises my father would have returned home. Because my ex service man father had no pain or discomfort.
      6. My father was told in the Cath lab that he had 85% blockage in the heart, but his assistant said that he had 100% blockage. How is it possible ?
Sir, have you heard of any patient being misguided in such manner ?
I know how traumatic is to take home the body of my father.
Our family is devastated after my father's tragic death.
I would have got better and sensible treatment in any of the hospitals in Kolkata. The surgeons here discuss every little detail of the risks and complications.massive
      Sir, please send your response.

Declared as most affordable healthcare country
With most patients from, USA, UK, Africa And pakistan and Bangladesh
In western countries especially USA healthcare is unaffordable for even them
They come to India, do the surgery
    Have vacations
And then go with near about same ammount of money
Forget about surgery the cost of providing a single knee cap in USA is more than our bypass surgery 🙄🙄
And the quality too isn't of such exceptional standards
It's the same thing, simple and good enough, brand too is the same
    But unknowing High prices 😭😭🙏

Indian health care should focus its energies on developing better Public Health; including clean water supply, sanitation, improved housing, family planning and rural health education programmes. It is not worth saving lives if the quality of living remains backward.

If there are few "angels" amongst doctors,
There are very very few amongst other professions.
While everyone else almost is trying to exploit everyone else, they expect doctors to remain aloof of the practical realities of survival today under capitalism.
      This is an unjustified desire.

I agree when Dr. Devi says that it is more dangerous to be admitted in US Hospital because I have been scared to be admitted in US Hospital many times. There many restrictions placed on Family based help to recovery process.

I was scared of the expenses of hospital many a time consequently I had to spend more money in taking of my tooth instead of getting filled. It is really a pathetic condition of 90 percent of Indians . You are so great not only to identify the facts but also to find a solution. Helping hands are better than praying hands. You are the real human with humanity.

I appreciate the comment Dr. Shetty made about questioning how we correlate the costs of healthcare to the cost of a person’s life. Also, the overall idea that nothing is a solution unless it is affordable. Thinking about past ethics discussions I have listened to, there are people who think that if someone can afford a procedure or medication, then why should they not be able to pay for it? However, if there are people who can pay absurd costs for a procedure, then I would think that would only drive the cost up if there are people willing to pay. The American Medical Association Journal of Ethics explains the definition of justice in healthcare as being “fair and equitable distribution of health resources.” In my mind, this would include making health resources more affordable as a way of equitably distributing those resources. However, it seems that numerous people are prevented from getting the health resources they need due to healthcare in the US not being affordable for many. I think the actions that Dr. Shetty's made in India to make healthcare more affordable are very admirable and inspiring, but it leaves me wondering how we can make some of these changes in the US? How can we convince people and companies to start making healthcare more affordable?
