He was a marginal rapper at best and worse yet, there was a fabricated biography circulated in the promotion of him. His manager and record label, at the very least, should have known better. The fake bio made him look inauthentic at the time, if not ridiculous.
If he was really great in music , he would have had more success. He would have given people reasons to keep buying his records and his concert tickets. The truth was he was a one-trick pony and a novelty act. The only thing innovative about him was he was young and white. He never had a musical identity of his own. Even when he was big, his music imitated everybody else. He couldn’t even be consistent about how he should rap on a record.
That's right. Arsenio failed here. His constant attempts to turn the audience against Ice fell flat. Ice hit it on the head when he referenced jealousy. The other 50% is Arsenio's contempt for a white man becoming famous and wealthy on what was originally black music. In other words, this is Arsenio's problem.
I hope Arsenal looks back at this interview and shakes his head. Instead of helping a young man he tried to tear him apart. On the other side, Vanilla did a fantastic job at staying comfortable, answering the questions, and came out on top.

When he lost fame and he was on some of the celebrity reality shows like Surreal Life, he was very down on himself and the whole Ice character. He hated his legacy. I think those shows encouraged a LOT of past fans and people close to him to tell him to embrace what he did, because he was a "moment" in a lot of people lives at that time in history. Ice Ice Baby was a silly fun song, and it was NOTHING to be ashamed of. You can play it today and remember those days and how much fun you were having hearing it. So many kids grew up on Turtle Rap and, again, it was a silly fun song but it meant a lot to kids at that time. You can see today that he is proud of everything he did. He might be embarrassed by those goofy ass clothes, but music that becomes big like that is timeless.

It's deeper, Ice used Flav as a stunt and things were going on in the background unexplained at the time but explained since. On the day Hall wasn't having it and couldn't mask his contempt. Appeared harsh on viewing however once explained justified.
Vanilla ice handled himself very well here. Doesn't get hostile, while standing up for himself. Doesn't bad mouth anyone, including a but hurt Arsenio. Good on him
He alluded to "some" being upset that people never bought rap albums until there was a white face on the cover. I think he is included in that. Contempt for Ice, although masterfully and seamlessly intertwined, from start to finish in this interview.
I loved Arsenio back in the day, but he's in attack mode here. Ice handled it well. "They love you man, nobody can be mad at you." Bravo, Ice. "Rap music is here to stay no matter what colour it is." Bravo, twice.
He isn't a hater. Vanilla Ice had been lying abaout multiple things and Arsenio had the balls to call him out on them. Thanks to this interview everyone started realizing how much Ice lied about to sound "hood"
To be fair, most people in hip hop at the time were putting on an act. I hate to say it, even 2pac. He claimed he was a thug, but he wasn’t. Ended up messing with a real thug who shot him.

Good comment. Arsenio acted like no one would notice his passive aggressive framing of his questions. Thinly veiled contempt and jealousy for a white rap star.
Back then a lot of black people were jealous and hated Ice because he was so called taking their shine. When in reality no one from the hood was listening to that garbage lol it was only little white kids. Nonetheless their jealousy was damn near uncontrollable as you see here.

Nobody likes a culture vulture
I met him too around 2002...very down to earth.

"It ain't where your from, its where your at." Well said Ice.
He said that because he lied about where he’s from and got caught. That was political. Shameful
