That "Balakanakamaya.." is the most devout and moving rendering ever....most people who sing it in a classical method like any tyagaraja kriti, cannot bring in that emotion... May be it should always be sung as nonstop free flowing prose...
Swargiya Nagayya garu was the first super star of South India. He had no children. Was a very compassionate and humble man. He died as a very poor man. All these gongs are sung by himself. Ghantasala was not into playback singing until late 40s. This was well before that. Those days it was important for the actors to sing the songs on their own. That's how we have S. Varalakshmi, Bhanumathi, Nagayya, etc
@spicyjulep I am afraid i disagree with you. The first and the foremost song taught to every Carnatic vocal student is Lambodara Lakumikara. Purandara Dasa still remains the father of Canatic music. That being said, it's extremely inappropriate to compare the musical geniuses of these saints.
