    Thanks a million ! My grip over the course of years of playing has become strong. I constantly pull my iron shots and have been aiming way right of my target to compensate. With my strong grip I also tend to bow my wrist at the top of the backswing and your video has finally explained my consistent pulled shots. Went to the range, and I just tried consciously "cupping" my wrist during the backswing and like magic, my shot is now right at the target I'm aiming at. Wow ! You're the first golf instructor in YT that has explained matching the grip to wrist position during the backswing. This will make it easier to win more bets off my buddies. :)

    Scratch golfer here, and this is one of the best instructional videos I have watched, and I have watched just about all of them. Every level golfer should watch this. Well done

    Amen! Love this vid. Golf swings are varied and complex. Hold the club how it’s comfortable and find the wrist angles that suit the way you hold it. I can’t stand a neutral grip. I have to over think so much. Strong crew :)

    This has to be one of the most profound golf instructional videos I have seen. I wish I was told this advice on day 1 when I first held a golf club. I have been playing with a grip that is between strong and neutral and I didn't realize the importance of maintaining the "matched" wrist angle on the downswing. I've had issues with really low ball flight, and it turns out I was bowing my lead wrist pretty hard on the downswing and swinging pretty steeply. I now maintain a wrist position slightly between flat and cupped during the whole swing, and it's amazing how well I was hitting it. I feel a lot more relaxed too on the downswing without worrying about changing my lead wrist angle. I recorded a video of my swing down the line and the swing is a lot more shallow. You hear all the time on golf videos "hit down on the ball" to have decent contact with irons and to make a divot. Well, I was taking that advice too literally and was swinging steeply and bowing my lead wrist. It just so happens that this advice has been killing my game for a couple years now lol.
    I watched this video 2 days ago, went to the range to the next day, and was absolutely crushing the ball with every club. I was surprised at how well I was hitting my long irons (3 driving iron, 5 iron, clubs I normally struggle with). The apex from the long iron shots must have increased by 60-70%. I tried out weak, neutral, and strong grips at the range yesterday and was able to hit shots well with all different grips. I definitely don't see myself playing a weak grip any time in the future - it feels too awkward to swing like that - but it was cool to pull of shots looking like Rahm or Spieth lol. It's a nice fact knowing that I can switch my golf grips anytime I feel like it if I wanted to, and knowing exactly how to play each grip.
    Also before watching the video, I was led to believe that only certain body types can play certain grips, such as the size of your hands being a factor, etc. When I went to my first ever golf lesson, I was told by the instructor that I need to change my strong grip to a neutral grip. It was somewhat off-putting to hear that at first, since swinging with a strong grip felt natural to me. Swinging with a neutral or weak grip felt impossible at the time the instructor told me that. Since that lesson, I've tried to slightly weaken my grip to where it's between strong and neutral and I've had some success. This video was basically the video I needed at the time to know how I could play well with any type of grip - even it felt uncomfortable at first.
    This video is a gem, thank you sir.

    Thanks for the overhead view now I know what I should actually see when done properly! Why other UA-cam instructors don’t get this is baffling to me!

      I have a strong grip so this is helpful. I am experimenting with a flying right elbow at the minute. Seems to help me rotate more and also shallow the club. Have you done a video on that by chance? Cheers, Peter

    When do you use strong vs weak? I tend to naturally cup wrists so will do strong... But does it matter if I tend to draw/pull the ball?

  • @scottchristie7945

    Great detail for the different grips! Just wondering with the strong grip and have your wrist cupped....how do you create shaft lean at impact...I feel like I'd be scooping with my wrist cupped and the clubhead would get to the ball before the hands!

    No lie. I’ve been using a neutral grip my entire life. Have always struggled with consistent ball striking particularly with irons even though I was certain the rest of my golf swing was good. I changed to a stronger grip yesterday and have never hit the ball more flush in my life. You da man.

      I struggle with my irons but find it hard to identify what grip type i have, what was your common miss and was your stock swing path more inside out or more over the top ?? Would be very helpful to know thankyou.

    • @HBTFDawgs
      @HBTFDawgs 2 роки тому

      @@tyler3398 common miss was a slice. Caused by coming over the top. Could never get my weight forward, at least at the proper time, until I changed to a strong grip. It just feels more natural for me.

    Dustin Johnson has a very strong grip and a bowed wrist. How does he get it to work?

      Ok. I have a copper wrist and I figured it's due to my grip being smaller than my hands. It's creating left wrist pain now, so, can changing to larger (oversize +) grip and getting a neutral grip relieve some of the pain help get back my accuracy?

    What about the release?

    • @jchowngolf
      @jchowngolf  3 роки тому

      If the club face is square in the downswing, a release to square the club wouldn’t be needed.

    I have always been scared of a cupped wrist until I saw this video.
    It is natural for me to have a bit of a cupped wrist and the strong grip means I can release in a way that feels correct and free flowing to me and it appears that the face is square to the arc all the way through! What a legend!
