  • As Hybrid/Electric Vehicles age so do their High Voltage batteries. As these batteries get older they are subject to heat related failures that can be caused by some very interesting reasons. My guest, Dorman's Dimitry Manoukis, explains these failures, their causes and how Dorman remanufacturers their replacement high voltage batteries to help overcome these problems.

    Hi Jim,
Thank you for taking the time to do all these great videos. We have a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid and the battery gave out 2 years ago and we have been driving on just the engine itself. It will no longer charge the batter and i am wondering if you can tell me what to replace in order to get the charge running to the 12 volt battery or if it is even worth it?
    Thank you,
    Mike from Calgary

Hi Cara - Long distance diagnosis is usually not very effective so I recommend that you have the system checked out with scan tool diagnostics to more efficiently locate the cause of the problem. I think it will be a whole lot cheaper and faster than just "throwing parts at the problem". You will then know if it would be worth it to get your Honda repaired. Thanks for watching!

Dorman NOW only offers a 12 month warranty. Not the 3 year warranty as stated by Dimitri Manoukis the Product Manager. Excellent pricing I found at Amazon depending upon model from $1865 to $3781 as of this date 3/11/2022. Hope this helps.

Got a used car from a dealer . Didnt know it had a dorman battery, It failed . It has all the tags ,date serial numbers on it . About thirteen months old . Dorman refused to help me in any way . They wanted the original paperwork and warranty card . They would do nothing for me to stand behind there product that failed well within the warranty period. If you buy a used car check to make sure it doesn't have there replacement battery in it ,if it does i wouldnt buy the car. I dont know if anyone will accept the dorman battery for a core now that i have to buy a replacement . Also it did fail in about a year. I got stuck i hope you dont .

Hi - Thanks for your comment about your experience. I'm no expert here but it seems to me that the dealer who sold you the vehicle has some responsibility here in providing you with the battery's paperwork, battery warranty, vehicle warranty, etc. Hopefully Dorman will jump in here to tell their side of the story as your experience is certainly bad publicity for them. Thanks for watching!

Earlier this year I went to NAPA to purchase one of these not knowing to much about them. I was just in a hurry to pay the money and get my car back on the road without worry. I asked to order one and they said well we won't sell you one because the last 4 have been bad and had to be returned. Thought it a joke at first but they were serious. Blessing in disguise because I took my battery apart and discovered the harness on the battery badly corroded. $70 bucks to purchase at dealer and cars back in business. It's a heavily used car for UBER and LYFT and about 20k more miles and running great.

How long are these hybrid batteries usually good for before they need to be replaced. Can you also talk about the importance of not overfilling the tank and ruining the regulator. I have run out of gas... with 2 bars and 31 miles left. Please talk about the reset and how filling the gas tank is not all it takes to get it going again.

Hi - Thanks for watching! I use to talk about these subjects during the clinics I did, and stopped doing when I retired from the auto parts business several years ago. Because of that and the fact that this video is several years old and things do change, I suggest that you refer to the vehicle owner manual and the service/repair manuals that are available at the dealer and auto parts stores for the latest useful information on these topics. You can also contact Dorman about their batteries and their expected life. Their contact information is in the video description.

Hi - Could be. I suggest you have the hybrid specialist or someone with a scan tool that can look at the traction battery's control module data stream to get a good look at what is going on across all of the battery. Thanks for watching!

    • @keithnewton8981

No far from it. It means a cell is failing and depending on the level will depend on how quickly you need to replace remember Toyota give between 8 no and 10 warranty on there battery packs if you have maintained full service be with battery health check your car could be still be covered.

I've worked on alot if these batteries and have NEVER seen build up between cells or and dirt or debris inside a pack . Seems like the only thing I didn't see mentioned is if they replace the bad cells and run the others dead and charge them back up a couple of times to rejuvenate them so they will make it down the road a little farther ?

    • @ronjacoby5048
      @ronjacoby5048 6 років тому +2

I agree. I have replaced dozens and dozens of these. The debris always ends up in the battery cooling fan. Make sure you clean the battery cooling fan if you replace the battery. Also, I do not recommend using "re manufactured" batteries. My experience is a 30-50% failure rate (in warranty). Our shop only uses oem Toyota batteries (brand new). Never a problem doing that. Batteries that fail before about 200k miles usually have leaking electrolyte that causes the corrosion. Sometimes you can clean the corrosion but you can't stop the leak! If they don't develop the electrolyte leak, they'll go for another 100k at least in many cases.

Does the new hybrid Camry or the Prius fit in a very hot climate from 50 to 40 degrees Celsius?
How likely is the battery life of the hybrid in this very hot climates?
Is it possible to live over 10 years?
Or can I reach 500 thousand kilometers in 10 years without damaging the battery?
What is the average lifetime of the Toyota hybrid batteries in very hot weather?

As of 1/1/2018, Toyota list price for the 04-09 Prius battery is $1,950 + tax. They are made from 100% new manufactured cells. Only have a 1 year warranty (if owner-installed; 3 year if dealer installed), but they'll last longer than ANYTHING Dorman produces.

If your vehicle is a Toyota product be sure the service jack (orange plug) is in all the way and LOCKED by pushing the handle in and then towards the center of the plug. If not, the interlock circuit will be open. Once the interlock circuit is closed everywhere you might have to try to start the vehicle several times before the computers verify it’s ok for the vehicle to start.

Hi - Thanks for watching! The 12-volt battery runs the computers so it has to be OK. Computers open high voltage "traction" battery's output stage relays to allow high voltage to run motor generator 1 in the "transmission" to start the Internal Combustion Engine, so computers, wiring and ICE have to be OK. High voltage "traction" battery has to be charged up enough to run MG1. If not and everything else is OK the dealership network has tools that can "jump" the HV battery to get you going. I hope this helps.

Can the battery cells drain off due engine not running because of the safety switch on the low oil pressure. Its shuts off the engine and only the high voltage moving the vehicle untill it dies off. Can the cell be drained off that way??

    • @WrenchinUpwithJimBates

    • @phb_3835
      @phb_3835 5 років тому

Yes and yes. Dorman replaces all the cells with used cells from other core batteries they receive. Picture this: 1) battery comes in, 2) battery is broken down and disassembled, 3) modules screened, 4) obvious bad modules discarded, 5) "good" modules reconditioned, 6) "good" modules that are successfully reconditioned and pass additional testing are put into stock, 7) 28 modules are pulled from inventory, 8) pack is built. Thus BOTH all modules AND just the bad ones are replaced. How many brand new modules are used to repair the batteries? ZERO.

Hi - Pulling cods is not diagnostics. The code gives you a place to begin your diagnostics. In this case, as a start, a bi-directional scan tool could be used to check the communications paths and the sensor itself. Following the diagnostic tree in a service/repair manual for the vehicle will likely be necessary.

@@WrenchinUpwithJimBates You and the Dorman Engineer were very professional, but there are many posts on this subject that present all the options (not just one of them), such as choosing a, used, rebuilt, or new battery pack or rebuilding it yourself. Along with the Pros and Cons of each. So your post came off biased after seeing the other posts. But thx for your reply, I respect you for getting back to me.
BTW. I would like give you kudos for being safe and using insulted rubber gloves with a protective cover. My late lineman father would have been proud of you. But you should have mentioned to use them in the post(or maybe I just missed it?). Also the rubber gloves should be tested for leaks before they are used each time. By trapping air in them and rolling up the opening to check for leaks.

You may be interested in another video on this channel about the safety issues ua-cam.com/video/o9WWVMDih9s/v-deo.html . I do have other videos in cell (module) testing, single charging, multiple charging with a harness and replacement procedures but because of the liability involved they are only available on DVD to working ASE certified technicians who have attended the live workshops.

Hi Jim My reasons for Doorman’s horrible product is the fact that their process for refurbishment are not stringent enough as I have had to replace my battery in my 09 Prius 3xs. Each time I had to call wait for the battery and waste my time. They simply don’t know what they’re doing with HV batteries.

Hi - Hopefully you have the warrantee in writing. There are probably several good hybrid vehicle battery testers out there that can accurately diagnose the hybrid battery in your vehicle. The Midtronics HYB 1 comes to mind. So, I would suggest that you find a business in your area that has this diagnostic capability and have the battery checked. If it provides proof of a defective battery the warrantee should be enforced. If the battery is OK, further diagnosis of the hybrid system should be performed by a qualified, and preferably an ASE Certified, technician who should be able to discover the cause of the problem.

@@WrenchinUpwithJimBates as to the HV batteries I have no opinion. My two most recent capers with Dorman parts involve a timing rebuild kit for a Ford 3 valve 5.4. Both phasers were coming apart by the 800 mile mark. The right one was slapping at about 300. Having to redo that job will make a disbeliever in most mechanics.
A week ago I replaced the rear backing plate and bearings on a Toyota Solara. Right side was fine, everything went well. Left side wouldn't allow the parking shoes to retract far enough causing enough drag to get hot. Got another backing plate same thing, apparently the top pivot post was installed too high causing the shoes to be spread too far apart. Had to machine the shoe ends to get it to work.
More often than not you get what you pay for. The savings I saw in parts cost, was more than eaten up in additional labor.
