    Mr. Kelley, I've been in the automotive field since 08 when I graduated from U.T.I. I worked at a few Chrysler dodge jeep dealers and took their basic courses on hybrid vehicles,much of which I have forgotten over the years working in independent shops,and hybrids just were not as common as they seem to be getting now. Today I had a 2013 Lexus rx400h get assigned to me for a no start complaint. I searched high and low on all data with no success in gaining any info or description and operation on how the system works and keeps the 12v battery charged,as I didn't just wanna throw a battery in it I wanted to verify the system was operating as designed... and I remembered your videos and this is just what I needed. I can't thank you enough for putting this info on UA-cam for Free! I would love to be able to come take your classes in person,but its just to far away for me in Ga.

    Hi Professor. Thank you so much for invaluable information. I own 2007 Prius and I have been my own mechanic since 2013 when inverter/converter unit went out. It took dealership 3 hours to troubleshoot it, cost me $318, California rates. Again dealership charge me $500 to replace low voltage battery, and finally $500 to replace burnout HID headlights. It was totally ripoff. Well, that was then. I finally figure out how to work on this vehicle now. Your information is helping filling the caps. Thank you once again for your time.

    I appreciate this series, and I hope I am not wasting anybody's time with a personal comment. In the 1920s my grandfather owned an automotive electrical service business in Wichita Falls, Texas, and also manufactured his own line of automotive batteries. Watching this video, I could not help but wonder what Grandpa might have thought of today's technology and problems, such as not being able to get to a dead battery because it was locked in a trunk that can only be opened electrically. Please keep up the good work--I just bought a 2018 Camry Hybrid and I need all the help I can get in understanding it.

If the HV battery had been left standing for a long time like going away for 6 months, if the battery was then almost flat could I still start the vehicle using the jump start connector or would the HV battery need to be charged at a Toyota dealership.??? Thanks for the video! How do you think, the charge current of the auxiliary battery more than 4.2 amp after switching on the car? Have you measured it?

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  3 роки тому +1

      Yes the current goes much higher if necessary, but the battery temperature is monitored by the DC to DC converter and it will turn down the current if the battery starts to get too hot. External chargers do not monitor the battery temperature so the charge current must be limited to prevent overheating the battery.

The only car to not have a traditional lead acid 12 volt battery is The Hyundai ionic hybrid the 12 volt battery is a lithium ion 12 V but it installed in the main battery pack and there's even a button on the left side of the dashboard if in the case the 12 volt system has been drain from the a phone or any other device connected to the 12 volt system the only downside is the price of replacement if it ever goes bad.

    Sensing of batt temperature on LV battery is not for over heating safety.
    AGM batts are charged to different voltage depending on temperature, and i have seen Ford car killing batts with 15,5V at summer, because of dead temp sensor. Basically the colder the higher voltage, and limit is at about 15,5V at under -10 deg C.
    This systems are just correcting charge voltage to proper electro chemistry activity levels and are typical even in non hybrid start-stop engines, and in some cars without it too, even in flooded, classical batteries - it is beneficial in every case, 14,4V is really proper only in room temperatures

    • @poprawa
      @poprawa 2 роки тому +1

      BTW, nowdays alternators can have digital charge controller build in with LIN connectivity to ecu and ecu can still be responsible for voltage management - poor ecu ground caused random charge voltage and charge message popping up to my client and it was actually hard to trace, as there is no way to check alternator by myself, and no errors were present anywhere

    • @poprawa
      @poprawa 2 роки тому +1

      But batt temp sensor built in the battery is awful, it is ideal to be mounted in battery tray and i would prefer for it to not be in way of drainage - leaky battery kills it in volvos and fords :>
      Many brands are just using outside temp and correct for known drift, its still less awful than custom battery

Read the scathing Car&Driver 40,000 long-term test on the Model S......car is a literal piece of garbage. Hi there. I have a 3rd gen Toyota Prius and I'm having some issues for a while with ( I think ) the 12V battery in such manner that when the Power button is pressed and the hybrid system in on, the multi information display on the top of the dashboard and also the trunk commands are not working for about 5-15 min (after that time delay the display pops on and the trunk also can be opened via trunk hatch button ) depending on how cold is it outside, no matter I drove or not the car the day before. Also I have replaced the 12V battery with a Bosch 40Ah for asian models and still the issue is there.
    When I bought the new battery I checked the charging voltage when the hybrid system was on (the 201V high voltage battery was almost fully charged at the time the test was done and outside temp was around 5 degrees celsius ) and it showed around 14.75V.
    Is the charging voltage normal or is this happening because I'm using a non-Toyota 12V battery?
    Thanks a lot and much appreciated!

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      14.75V is normal. It sounds like there may be a poor connection somewhere. I would check for trouble codes to see if there is any computer related issues. I would also check your fuses. Unplug them one at a time and plug them back in to see if any feel loose. Best wishes!

    I've started driving a used Prius C and am enjoying trying to understand the details. Am I right that the 12V system is essentially for accessories and computers only? The ICE is started by MG1 from the traction battery isn't it? If so a Prius with dead 12V battery probably needs a tiny boost to get started. Maybe 30 or 50A at 12V to get the various computers, control systems, coolant pump, vacuum pump and other accessories up and functioning so a computer can start the ICE and begin recharging the traction battery with MG1 and charging the 12V accessory battery with the DC/DC convertor. Could one conceivably build a little lithium "Prius booster" the size of a key fob that would plug into the 12V outlet in the cabin and provide 50A for 2 or 3 minutes until DC-DC takes over?
    Thanks for all the fantastic videos prof. Kelly. I never knew a transaxle tour could be so fascinating. :-)

    Please do not understand what follows as a criticism:
    I realized that you first plugged the meter's alligators clamps on the low voltage battery points and after that turned the multimeter´s selector to choose its function. I think that with 12 volts, and considering that you use a Fluke Multimeter (very good quality brand!!) there is no risk of damaging it but, anyway, it is always good to have the habit of first choosing the function of the multimeter and then touch the test points.

    How dumb is it for engineers to design a vehicle with no manual override of opening doors like the hatchback to get to the battery when it goes dead? Dumb design. Same goes for electric hood latches. Same goes for having to tow a car when a battery is dead and not allowing the trans to go into neutral. Dumb design.
    My subaru hatch is made this way also, but no battery is in the trunk. Still a dumb design.
    Reminds me of working on an inoperative electric driver door lock on a Honda that would not allow door to open even manually inside or outside. So I had to remove the driver seat via from the passenger side (had to be a contortionist) and almost break the door panel to open the door to gain electric lock access and disconnect it, just to open the door. These crazy engineers.😢

    So, does the DC/DC converter (to 14v) care about charge current, or is it constant voltage?
    And, Harbor Freight has a Viking 4 Amp Fully Automatic Microprocessor Controlled Battery Charger/Maintainer, #63350 about $40
    It is AGM capable.
    I would want to charge the Aux battery with the external charger to get it fully charged, before I turned the vehicle on, in order to limit the charging current.
    I also charge the Aux battery about once a month with the external smart charger to fully charge it. The 14 volt system will not do that.

    My only error message I get are the yellow triangle, and all of the brake error lights, and "Check the Hybrid Charging System". I have a used brake master cylinder to put in. I was told that there was a fault code indicating a bad AC Compressor. So I bought another one and will get it installed tomorrow or Monday. I replaced the Inverter/Converter. And finally, I removed the bus bars and cleaned the corrosion off, adding a thin film of conductive gel. Reassembled and tested every cell to verify that it's good. It is.
    The 12vdc is also good. Oh, I refilled the inverter cooling system too.
    After all of these things I've done, I still get the same error.
    So, I pulled the contactor tray and tested them with a 9v battery. They are all good. I watched an Ohm meter to make sure that the contacts were conducting, and they were.
    The only thing back there is the startup computer. Do you think that there's something out of wack in there?
    I can also try bridging the contactor to start the ICE.
    I bled the brakes as well.
    Checked the oil, it was okay.
    I just don't know what else to check out.
    I also bought a code reader, but I don't think that it's good for Hybrid cars. Do you have any suggestions?
    I'm prepared to try to turn over the ICE with a socket and long breaker bar to see that it rotates.
    Change the AC Compressor, vacuum and recharge the system tomorrow.
    Walk over to the auto parts store and exchange the code reader for one that gives the right codes for a Hybrid.
    While I'm at it, why not change the plugs too...
    Thank you again, I wish I could take your class in person. You really know so much about these critters. I feel so blessed to be able to watch your videos on these cars. I'm amazed at how much you know. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and specialty with us.

I see explanation in ua-cam.com/video/M53Hbh5wpRQ/v-deo.html but on the other hand iI saw in below comments Ithat AGMcan be replaced by acid battery.

    I have a 2012 Toyota Prius 2nd gen. After I left my headlights on over night, my 12v went completely dead. And I just got it jump start but I dont have a battery charger. I have heard that if I leave the engine on for over 8-10hrs, it will charged the 12v battery completely. Is that true? If I leave the engine on over 12 hrs then what will happen to the battery? Will it harm the battery because it is over 12 hrs?
    And if I do end up replacing the 12v oem battery from Toyota, do I need to leave the engine on for 8-10 hrs so the battery can be fully charged? Or I need a AMG battery charger hook up for 8-10 hrs? What is the standard procedure after you replace the 12v battery? Thanks

I have a question for you, I have a 2023 Hybrid Tucson (not a Plug In)I am wanting to put the car on a trickle charge, as I am leaving the car in a garage for 6 months, but I have no battery in the engine compartment, I see a bare terminal on the inside of the fuse box, could I connect that with the positive and find a good ground, if that works do I need a special trickle charger?

    When I need to remove my dead 12V AGM battery from my Toyota Axio Hybrid, do I need to remove fuses at the fuse box ? I've charged the 12V AGM battery using a normal charger which I didn't check the specs and it worked when I put it back on the car but weeks later , battery found dead again, why would you think that is ?

    It's worth mentioning that AGM batteries have a security overflow drain pipe. We saw it in the video at 22:25. These batteries are entirely sealed and any generated gases are vented through that tube instead of inside the cabin. This is why AGM batteries are used in vehicles whose 12v battery is in the cabin.

    They may call it auxiliary but it's essential. It makes some sense to me still have a low voltage battery, it allows the DC to DC converter to be sized slightly above the average power consumption. If there wasn't a battery, the DC to DC converter would have to be able to power all the headlights, the rear defroster, the horn, etc at the same time.

    I have the same Snap-On charger I use but the CTEK chargers are better. I use the CTEK Multi US 7002 for my marine Optima batteries and it will pulse charge up to 7A as required and will go into maintenance storage mode and only charge as the battery voltage dictates. I use it to maintain my bass boat cranking & trolling motor batteries and I can get almost twice the life with the CTEK. What is the amperage rate for charging system of the low voltage battery? Reason I ponder this is because Kiddos left the interior lights on in our 08 Highlander Hybrid, it would not start until I jump started it- wife went to work (25 minutes) and it failed to charge- headlights even worked but still failed to start until jump started again- seems much pickier than a conventional system even though its started by the high voltage side as Everything low voltage worked great, but couldn't get the "ready" light until jump started- once "ready" was on the dash it cycled the ICE correctly on the drive home. All is good now that I left my motorcycle AGM 2A charger on it overnight.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      4-5 amps for no longer than 10 hours when using an external charger. No limit when the vehicle's own charging system is charging it because it monitors the temperature and adjusts the charge rate to avoid overheating the battery.

    4.2 amps vs 5 amps charging current on a car battery wont make a bit of difference. it's fine if you intend to do things exactly by the book, especially when teaching, but when doing things myself on my own car, it would only serve to piss me off if the computer in a car prevented me from doing something that would work just fine but isn't strictly by the book.
    I put a large AGM battery in my cobalt, which it normally doesn't take that type or size. it barely fits, but it works great for me and serves my needs.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  6 років тому

      Maybe. Your Cobalt is not charged by a DC-DC converter. When it comes to hybrid and electric vehicles, stick with the manufacturer's recommended procedures or things can get very expensive. Thanks for your feedback

    Hi Professor, I have a Gen 2 Prius which internally charges the 12V battery to between 13.5 - 13.8V. This seems to be normal for Gen 2 Prii.

    • @WeberAuto

      13.5-13.8 is just fine. The voltage is regulated by the battery temperature sensor and battery state of charge

    Which generation Priuses need that special battery? My daughter has a gen-1 and I believe it has a standard lead-acid 12V battery. We bought the car used, but it gets regular service at a Toyota dealership.

    • @WeberAuto

      The first three generation Prius' have AGM batteries. They must be vented externally. Standard lead-acid batteries are not safe due to not being vented to the outside of the car. They area more likely to spill electrolyte inside the car in an accident as well.

      You're right. Not sure about the capacity of the hybrid shown here, but other small evs have a charge rate of 10-12 amps. As long as you have some extra time, (and you're not trying to start a diesel), you should still be able to get them going. Even still, if it was an emergency, think of an EV as a mobile power plant. You could still hook up the diesel and leave it on there for an hour (or hours) with no consequence. Just make sure the car is on. I'd probably disconnect before starting the diesel, though.
