      Not as great as yours but I didn’t use thickened dye, do you think that would make a difference? Mine just looked pastel dyed, still pretty but not as dramatic.

      @@hespie3579 - Yes. The reason this example has such depth is because of the thickened dye.

      Trying this again, I had ‘old’ dyes made up over a week ago so I tried your pastel alien spine with them ... turned out the most vibrant I’ve ever done! 😂
      Then I thickened the dribbles of dye left over #mighthaveoverdonetheguargum and waiting with bated breath!

    I was so glad I found this video of you trying low immersion! I have only been doing tie dye for a few months now, but I got mesmerized on this process, and I couldn't back away from it. Like you, I found so much conflicting information, that I wound up trying different techniques, with varying degrees of success. I tried the tight jar one like this from a video I found, and that lead me to research the quilters sites, which were full of great new techniques, including freezing the shirt and putting the soda ash onto liquid dye. Mine did not turn out as good as hers, but that lead me to find a wonderful series of videos by some wonderful dyers, from Ann Johnson to Claire Brem, and others. I found a most satisfying Low immersion technique, using an ordinary scrunch fold with rubber bands, (and some with acordian folds with scrunch in between lines, powdering with contrasting dyes with shakers to evenly distribute, and then syringing the warm soda ash water slowly over the various areas. Then, I set it with 140 degree hot water...and it was magic. The collision of colors between the sections of acordian folds split into all sorts of color, but no, the camera does not begin to show the depth of effects with this process. People can't help but touch my shirt when I wear one. It looks textured. Thanks for doing this one; I had given up on some of the brighter colors, and now I am "dyeing" to try again. I love how the colors mingle but don't mix.This process does not seem to be one well known to tie dyers which may be why there is so little information about it.

    I use warm water but not as hot as 120°. Using warm or cool water allows the dye to "move" thru the fabric and make crystalline designs. When the water is hot the dye starts to bond sooner thus the dye doesnt have much time to creep thru the fabric. Of course theres many parts of the process that will make a difference in your outcome.

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 роки тому +3

      I recorded this one 4-6 weeks ago and I've done some experimentation since then. It looks like the "depth" in the colors on the scrunch is largely due to the thickened dye. With that said, you'd still need to do this as a LI and not a straight thickened liquid dye to see those results.

    I’m excited! I have got to try this one !
    The scrunch was my favorite. But the more I looked at the spiral I was digging it too!

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 роки тому +2

      I felt the same after someone requested that I do a video on this method. I kept thinking, "Why? It doesn't sound impressive and the results in the few pictures I've found look like a low saturation liquid dye."
      Needless to say - I was surprised with the results. And, *this* is the reason I like to experiment with other options.
      I would assume that a longer batch time would result in less depth in the colors because you wouldn't have the pastel results under the saturated colors - the longer you batch. But, that's just my assumption....

    Mr. Casual Collisions, I'm really having a hard time with rinsing my tie dyes, I always have back stains on my work. I just wish you could do a video about rinsing. Thank you so much!

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 роки тому +1

      The rinsing is really quick and simple:
      1) I rinse in the sink in COLD water until I'm sure all the soda ash has been removed. Roughly 2-4 minutes per shirt with active motion.
      2) I launder the shirt with a very small amount of detergent in the washing machine. I use warm water and an extra rinse cycle.
      3) Then the shirt is dried in the dryer with a spare towel to speed drying.
      If you have stains on the material after washing, you likely didn't rinse all the soda ash out of the material during the first rinse OR you used hot water to rinse. Sometimes I misjudge the length I need to rinse and end up with some staining in the white areas -- it happens.

    I've done low-immersion dyeing on yards and yards and yards of quilt fabric, and I have to say that I never got a result like that. Undoubtedly because I did the soda-ash soak beforehand. I'm thinking that you got the result that you did because the soda-ash solution didn't penetrate all the way to the bottom of the bowl. It just soaked in about halfway. That would explain the more saturated colors (which got soda ash) and the pastels (which didn't.)

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  3 роки тому

      I've tested this many more times and the "leopard effect" seems to be due to using thickened dye. With regular liquid dye, the results are a standard LWI result; but, with thickened dye, the more saturated areas are the initial area where the thickened dye is applied and the lesser saturated areas are the small distance that the thickened dye travels over the time prior to being washed-out.

      @@CasualCollisions Trying this now with a spiral. I wet it with plain water, made as tight a spiral as possible while damp using a fork and I really torqued it tight. I powdered it but in a spiral instead of sections the way you did mostly with purples and black filler. I laid ice on it fairly heavy and went to bed. So it's had maybe 6 hours to melt and sit. I have just applied soda ash water at near boiling temps with about two tablespoons of soda ash dissolved. I've obviously deviated some from your method so I'll be interested to see the result - honestly I think I should've used less ice and possibly less time but it was near 3am when I laid the ice. Fingers crossed it's not an unrecognizable blob when it's done in an hour! I'll report back in a few hours :)
      Edit: First wash done! My spiral is coming out just like your's albeit different colors - I only used purple and black. It looks terrific so far with the same "depth" that you've gotten - awesome!

Ever since I seen this video I have been just scarily obsessed trying to recreate your low immersion scrunch and I don't feel like I'm even close and I've done at least 20 of them. I pack it tightly in the bowl, I feel like I'm putting about as much dye as you are. I've left the color anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 or 4 hours. Put two cups of soda water with two tsp of soda, and leave that site untouched for an hour or so and rinse it out. I can post a few pics if that helps you at all. But please before my girlfriend kills me, where am I going wrong?

      I use guar gum, not sodium alginate; and, the ratio depends on what I'm looking for with each tie dye. Generally I start around 1/4 tsp per 16oz water and go from there.
      I use a blender if I plan well enough ahead; but, if I don't plan to use a thickened dye or if I just don't feel like cleaning the blender, I mix by hand. If I use a blender, I use it to make a thickened water solution and then divide that amoungst the bottles and then add dye to each bottle.
