Learn Japanese with me -> bit.ly/3h41HeA
Dear god man the reading material.
it would be fun to see what Japanese people thought of different language speakers speaking Japanese phrases. like British English speaking a Japanese phrase, see the nuances of our accents on their language.
Love these interviews with people on the street. Would love to see more. Hope this video gains a lot of traction.
The second example is entertaining, there is a UA-camr who sounds the same but is not Indian.
DiodeGoneWild is the name of the channel
Thank you, Yuta-Senpai!
Plot twist, Yuta just wanted to flex his native-like English skills.
Lol
He's not native though. He has fluent english skills though.
Yeah, if i couldn't tell his voice i would have placed it more towards australian maybe... He does not have the normal japanese accent ^^
@@mathis8210 It seems he learned english in a similar manner to me. Learning the language piece meal from several different sources and many different examples. Like I have a base of a dorset accent (RP accent), since thats the correct english Iearned through exposure. But i also copied subtle nuances of how my filipino mother speaks english. And know pronounciations of specific words in the american manner due to friends and the simpsons.
With Yuta he clearly started learning in Katakana form and then later corrected himself but kept the echoes of the accent he memorised. Later he likely encountered the difference between L and R because i hear him emphasising the R sound, overcompensating to sound more american. He says his vowels in a rather Japanese manner. But then he learned certain words in the softer english pronunciation. Like when he says more. He says Maw like an english person as opposed to the hard R Morrr.
If he wanted he could totally just live somewhere english speaking 9for like 2 years) and completely remove the kinks to sound completely authentic.
@@mathis8210 To me his accent has strong syllabic stress that I hear from Chinese speakers, but has a lot of the vowel sounds that I know from Japanese accents. A bit of australian cadence though.
I love that the piece they read was just a line from Rick and Morty lol
And I understood pretty much all of it. since im from the south. Florida to be exact. although it doesn't really feel southern at all to be honest. well at least where im from. my bff might say otherwise since he grew up on a farm.
@@Floridamangaming729 If you live in South Florida like Dade, Broward, Orange, etc county then yeah it doesn't feel southern, but the more Northern you go the more Southern it gets.

People submitted the voice clips for free. He asked in a community post a while ago.
Yup I took part lmao
I haven't watched rick and morty in forever, so i thought the audio clips where from an actual scene :P
‘Excerpt,’ but yeah.
@@beatfromjetsetradio8239 I think you'll find that 'extract' and 'excerpt' are synonymous.
To be fair, Yuta does have an atypical accent to most Japanese people when speaking English. His pronunciation is quite unique.
why did i hear this comment in his accent
I've never seen this channel before and have no (specific) interest in Japan (although I am very interested) so it didn't occur to me for a second that his segment was japanese, I guess italian! I found it realy hard to pinpoint, I assumed it was a non-native European who has lived in the UK for a long time as the accent is clearly following a broad "English" accent.
A more standart one is the guy called Nobita, he has a heavy Japanese accent I've seen in most people I've met. It has a lot of katakana phonetics.
@@SiriProject Just goes to show that you shouldn't teach or even assert that Katakana english is correct english. Because its not even vaguely correct most of the time. I genuinely think the correct way is teaching the functions of the roman alphabet, just to demonstrate how dynamic the system is. And how diverse a verbage you can have using it, and understand why english is how it is from that understanding.
And I honestly think its far simpler to teach than memorising Kanji all from as early as elementary to high school and maybe even into higher education.
Not because I say Roman letters is better. But simply demonstrating that compared that. Teaching roman letters is far simplier. One can take years. The other can take an afternoon.
I feel like Nobita could've been a better candidate for the Japanese accent
As soon as I heard the "Hello" I knew it was Yuta. Shame he wasn't doing the interviews, would have been great to just see him announce "It was me" and shock the hell out of them.
oh my god yess that would be a great idea
Yuta's accent is definitely a strange one.
It was I, Dio!
Yes!!!
I thought it was Chris Broad from the hello but the second snippet of audio told me it was Yuta.
it's funny that they consistently said that Yuta's accent is the clearest and definitely native, because it sounded the most familiar to how their teachers spoke, maybe.

AHHH omg I'm in this! Mines was the Scottish accent at the end! I'm so flattered I was picked but I didn't expect to get Korean? This is so cool and interesting to watch. Thanks Yuta!!!
Loved your voice and accent! Thank you!
Your voice is so cute ❤️ And I love your accent.
Your accent is really soft, and easy to understand.
The Scottish accent is usually one of the most difficult to understand, as illustrated here:
ua-cam.com/video/qkKdGpNpDPI/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/n7G4z5uEQnE/v-deo.html
Oh thank you!! Yeah i definitely agree that there are stronger variants of the Scottish accent and mines is quite soft. I also spoke a bit clearer so that probably has something to do with it!
I knew instantly that from northern part of the UK. Took me a few more second to realise that was a Scottish. Nonetheless, your voice was charming.
Always so smooth with the learning Japanese part
Yuta's was a wild card LOL. Not a typical Japanese accent but also not a typical foreign English Accent! Well done!!
Yep!
It's definitely an east Asian man trying to speak in a standard American accent. Slightly towards Japanese, but Chinese could sound like this as well.
"Maybe it's Australian"

Yah, neah

16:10 that is such a common misconception! Everyone has an accent and there is no "standard" English. In the UK alone there are hundreds of accents. So be proud of your accent, native or not!
RP accents do exist.
@@Trashheapcuntspawn Yes, but in my opinion it's an oversimplification of what language really is. Just because an accent is traditionally considered to be "standard" doesn't mean other accents are incorrect. I would argue that minority of people speaks with RP accent based on my experience.
They said they didn't understand at all. If you want to show that there's no standard English, he should ask Japanese who are advanced level. Anyway who think shame on his/her accent in the first place? The accent and accuracy are different.
@@Trashheapcuntspawn RP isn't a standard really, it's just a specifically codified way of speaking which was favoured by broadcast media for a few decades up till the eighties somewhere. The standard accent favoured by those media now is called "Estuary English", but still that's no more a standard than RP ever was!
@@coconutpineapple2489 not sure what you're trying to say but I want to clarify that I only referred to what the girl said in the video to point out that this misconception is very common. Noone shamed anyone in the video but in real life it happens on daily basis. So I just wanted to encourage people who might read my comment to be proud of their accent!
Yuta does speak English with a British accent so I think they did well in guessing.
@H S Leaning more towards British IMO.
Yeah sounds like a mix to me
Soft British, but certainly not fully American. Also some nasal sound carried over from Japanese I think.
@H S iirc japanese people actually learn british english, so its more leaning towards british
@@fakename2336 Think it depends more on where they've spent time overseas and what English media if any they consume. I would say Yuta's is Japanese speaking vaguely Standard British with bits of American. It's pretty hard to pin a non-native speaker down to specifics because it will be all sorts mixed in. Also 'British' and 'American' are incredibly broad on their own.

no, his accent sounds quite weird, exaggerated, unnatural.
The only accent that wasn't immediately obvious to me (American) was the Philippine accent. I thought it was Italian (see Melodica Bros for example).
Italian? That's curious. I've never heard any native Italian speaker sounding that way when using English.
I thought it was from Austria
I was so confused, I guessed Germany although it doesn't sound like a German person

Actually the number in the UK who speak something like the queen is 2% or less now.
The fillipino accent was the hardest to tell as an european who has plenty of experience with english speakers.
You probably just haven't met many Filipinos. Their accent was actually pretty obvious by the end
With the filipino accent the consonants tend to be very hard and the vowels are very similar to italian and spanish but there are regional (north & south) differences.
How? They sound like mexican peewee hermans.

@@Crushenator500 You are right I don't think I have ever met or spoken with a Filipino neither in english or my native language.

That was a very soft Scottish accent, being Scottish myself it was easy to tell it was Scottish. But, there are a lot rougher and more intense Scottish accents out there that would be more difficult and unique to tell. Would love to see someone trying to guess an accent like that.
Scottish too, I nearly laughed when I heard it because it sounds exactly like a girl I know.
"I did eh, yer paren's are gonna do eh, break tha cycle Mortey, rise above"
There's something odd about living a Scot living in England. You lose the accent yourself but you can instantly understand someone speaking it.
Since it was very soft near the beginning I thought it might have been from northern Ireland.
I'm English (from the East), I was having trouble guessing which city she was from - any idea? My brother’s wife is Japanese, but she speaks English with an English accent because she learned from a native English tutor. You would never know she was Japanese if you only heard her. As for the US accent, you could do a whole different video pointing out the various accents that are spoken there. Same for the UK + Ireland.

UK/England is actually a pretty good guess for Yuta's accent, his accent has a lot of characteristics of an accent from southern England, like the low vowels in words like "ask" and "what", and non-rhotic "r" in words like "Morty" or "hard".
Yep!

I can’t believe they couldn’t tell when the person had a Japanese accent in English
This happened to me too. At first, I couldn't tell if someone else had a Spanish/Latino accent in English unless it was very thick and evident.
But I also had trouble recognizing different English accents in general. It's been a few years now and I'm getting better at that.
From talking to other people, it seems like learning to distinguish accents in your target language is an advanced skill.
Because yuta doesn’t really have a Japanese accent or it didn’t sound like it in the clip

I immediately recognized the Filipino accent after hearing "hello"(because I'm Filipino); the rest, I had to hear the longer monologue to get the correct accent including Yuta's.
Nice Yuta! I was just looking for a video like this earlier this week! Glad to see you made one! Hopefully NY accent is in here

I wasn't able to get any of them from the "hello" alone. The only one that I didn't instantly get from the second example was the Philippines. It would be interesting to see how well Japanese people can distinguish between their own accents
I smiled right away because I recognize it rightaway that it was yuta speaking English.

On the topic of accents:
I have recently watched a relatively old anime called „Shinreigari“ or „ghost hound“ and the accent in there sounded really different from normal Japanese and really good. A little internet research showed it to be Fukuoka-ben or Hakata-ben. Can you do a video on this accent?
You should check out Mashiro No Oto that just aired this last season. The main character and everyone from where he's from speak the Tsugaru dialect and it sounds much different from standard Japanese.
@@Tohlemiach Yeah I dont know why, but I feel like the japanese dialects sound friendlier than standard japanese. Maybe its because its what you speak to friends and family, and standard japanese is the business/polite language.
@@hauptmann25 Yeah I think it could definitely have a lot to do with that. You hear the dialects almost always without honorifics, so I think that's going to give them the impression that they're more intimate. I guess it would be good to compare casual standard Japanese to these other dialects. I'd still say they sound warmer and rounder, and I think it has a lot to do with their regular usage of "ya" instead of "da". It's just a softer sound.
Ghost Hound is a golden classic!

Yuta’s British accent was not bad.
When I was going through the second clip: This is definitely British accent but something is strange.
When I heard the third one: Haha, this is clearly Yuta.
The beginning “When I was little” reveals that the speaker is not native. But the pronunciation of latter part was quite impressive. Yuta does grab the essence of British style of speech.
Yep!
This was easy. I got them all apart from the Philippines one. I only got the Japan one because it was obviously Yuta's voice. And the Philippines one I thought sounded similar to the Indian one, just not as strong.
Thanks, Yuta, for the interesting video. I had fun guessing the accents as well, and got them all correct except for the Scottish accent which I thought was either that or a British accent from the countryside 😅. I’ve listened to your voice long enough to recognize it, lol!

The 1st one is called African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Lang Focus did a really good video on the linguistics of it.
I guessed all accents correctly the first time, I was a little confused at Yuta's version because the first two audio really sounded like British but the third gave it away
As someone who will be moving to Scotland soon, I'm proud of myself for having identified the scottish accent at the first few words.
Hearing a Japanese guy day England was amazing. And being British myself and hear that lady say "British people don't have and accent. because we're native speakers." I think I know what she meant. But it still made me laugh alot!!! Because in Britain we have more than 1 accent in our country. Even across the the diffent countries that make it up. Please keep doing these videos. I enjoy them very much!!!
The third one was Yuuta himself speaking wasnt it? That one took me a minute cause his accent is very interesting. The only one I didnt get was the 4th one, I thought it was a french (or french Canadian) accent, but Ive never really heard phillipino english before.
Yay! I got all but the one from the Philippines.
I wonder how they'd do if the clips were people speaking in Japanese. Would it be easier to recognize where the accents were from if they were speaking the native language of the people guessing?
Now I kinda wish I came across these videos before to give Yuta a Canadian accent a listen x3, also I could only figure out the first two accents
I played along when I watched the video. I got every accent apart from Philippine's (Not really familiar with that accent as I don't really know anyone from the Philippines!)
On the Japanese one, I initially thought it was someone faking a british accent (I'm British, so it sounded like british but there were bits that sounded unnatural to me), then eventually I realised it sounded very similar to the beginning of the video when Yuta was speaking! :D
This is good, it gets me guessing and try to see if I can manage to get them correctly. I am happy that I did. To me, the hardest one was the last one. The first one sounds like how the Williams sisters (venus & serena) speak, so I know it is American. Staying in the country where there was quite a number of Indians, I definite know the second one. Third was Yuta, especially he speaks. Living more than half of my life in Philippines, it is easy to guess the 4th one. The last one was a bit tough even though I know it sounds from the UK. I managed to guess it to be Scottish because he sounds and reminds me of Alex Ferguson.😁 Yay!
I'm not a native englsih speaker but I'm happy I got 4/5 correct! The only one I couldn't guess was Philipines accent, the "a" sounds made it sound very familiar to some of the slavic accents I heard before but no ringing 'r's so i was very confused! I enjoyed listening to the Japanese people' opinions on the recordings, they were very waried and unexpected!
The girl with the mint and purple backpack who said she has Filipino roots is SO CUTE. You can tell how nice she is by how she talks 💜
that was super interesting! wish you you included mine though 😂
I like the guitar guy, he's completely clueless.
I can only guessed it right for 4 of them : black person from US, India, and Scotland. And of course Yuta's lol. Was about to send mine (already on Drive) but I'm not too sure about the last question. Luckily didn't sent it cuz it was like 2 paragraphs long.
Thanks for the video, so entertaining yet informative.
I feel like it is so much easier to tell accents that are close to what you hear. Like the Southern accent one was super easy to tell since I'm from the US.
Great video, Yuta! I nailed the American and Indian accents, but completely botched YOUR accent, LOL! (I had guessed northern Africa for yours.) The Filipino accent was interesting and I was slightly off for the Scottish accent as I had guessed northern England. This test is a lot of fun for native English speakers as well!
This is the script for the first 3 English conversations from the Southern USA with Ebonics.
1) "Hello."
2) "Listen, Mory, I hate to break it to you, but what people call love is just a chemical reaction that compel animals to breed. It hit hard, Mory. Then it slowly fade leaving you stranded in a failing marriage. I did it; your parents gonna do it. Break the cycle, Mory, rise above! Focus on signs!"
3) "When I was lil bitty, I was real quiet and I really like reading books. Usually, I was reading scary books and people thought I was weird. I... I probably really was."
The next 4 times, the third answer was changed per person.
Keep up with the great videos!
