My dad is very much an atheist. I'm very much a Christian who follows Christ. He always makes sure to tell me, especially if I'm reading/studying my Bible "You know that thing is full of contradictions right?"
The most illogical thing I've heard him say about it is "Eh, all religions are fake. All religions ESPECIALLY Christianity are just used to control people. But the main lesson I all of em? Just don't be a d**k and you'll be fine."
I'm beginning he lied when he said he's fully read the Bible.
@@CatThwomper My mom was raised Catholic and I pray for her every day since she had terrible experiences that hardened her heart. She's agnostic it's hard for me to make her try to separate politics from the gospel.
@@BoondockBrony I get what you mean. I actually for a while, started to watch politics, and as the old saying goes "Politics is poison" which couldn't be truer. But we gotta remember that, at the end of the day, God will bring us to do what is right. I don't know if what I've said... typed had helped, but I will keep you in my prayers.
@@CatThwomper Ask him then why did all the original apostles (excluding John, the one whom the revelation was revealed to.) (historically) die for the message of the resurrection. What did they control during their time? Why would they all die for a lie? Was it a hallucination? Were all the 500 people present hallucinating during the supposed resurrection? And if he believes that Jesus didn't exist, then why come there are 30-40 sources outside of the Bible while up to even the late 2nd century there are about 12 sources of Tiberius, who was the caesar of Rome during Jesus's time.
@@CatThwomper Judging from that you dad seems to be a average guy, lots of people see it that way nowadays. If I had to guess he watched Zeitgeist, the film has been watched by many who say that including my dad. Maybe try asking him about it and see how that might tie in to his disbelief, helped with my Dad. I would also recommend watching the film, not because it is good but because it is bad. If you can't take on the claims in the film you need to do some studying (it's okay InspiringPhilosophy who is linked in this video has addressed many of the claims, because those claims are made by internet atheist all too commonly).

I think one of my favorite verses are ones like
"I Tertius who wrote this letter, greet you..." or "send also my cloak and especially the scrolls..."
They were significant verses in showing me a glimpse into the real, daily, authentic human life of these people who sat and physically wrote out these scripture while the Spirit was weaving together the mosaic of Jesus through the human life.
"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us..."
It is actually so fitting that the Bible is not some magic book appearing from heaven.
God uses the weak things of the world to show His glory.

I always stated that my belief begins and ends with Christ. In John 1:1, I see, "In the beginning was the "Logos"...The Word; the driving principle of the universe's underpinnings. Christ is the focal point that gives the Bible meaning, and it points to him. Excellent material, by the way. God bless you!

I thought I was satisfied with believing in Jesus, not needing to know the bible inside out. Man did I realise how wrong I was after an intense 3 month bible school where I read it chronologically cover to cover (first time reading the whole thing). My prayer life grew, spiritual life grew, boldness in sharing the word, and my relationship to God. It is so important to read this book!! And it really needs all 66 books to make sense. Revelation, that weird book, man is it needed for all the other 65 to make sense.

Many people have rejected the apocrypha because it contradicts things that were already stated in the Bible for example the book of Tobit says to not marry outside of your own race but that is inconsistent with many characters such as Abraham I believe. Please correct me if I got anything wrong.

I am part of the Dutch Reformed Church under the PKN (Protestant Church in the Netherlands) and I agree with much of what you said. I am glad to have stumbled upon your channel after I saw the video where you went over each book of the Bible!

The main atheist points are "Why should I believe this verse"
I think that's the thing with faith. We have to believe that he's there and God will show himself/the truth to us. It's what separates Christians and the unbelievers, to those will be saved and those who's not. God didn't and wouldnt let everyone without a proof of himself for them to find and believe so they wont have excuses. God gives each of us enough reasons to believe out of grace, sometimes we dont just see. Let's say this, if our path to salvation is "faith", how would we (or enough of us) be saved if God literally shows himself to us from the start, ending up with unrevocable and unrefutable proof? Wouldn't we not be unbelievers cuz we literally just cant not believe? We are to be outright obligated to believe he exists and no one would be getting something good out of that. But that is just my opinion, there should be someone who's better blessed in ability to answer this.

Hey Zoomer, I really respect your work and find your videos to be very insightful. I myself am a Catholic and personally view Mary as a very important part of my faith. I see her as the perfect role model and I believe that praying to her and asking for her intercession is extremely valuable. I know that many Christians do not think of her as much as Catholics do and do not ask for her prayers. As you are Presbyterian I would love to know what you think of her.

It's very sad how little many protestants think of the Mother of God. Like I get not praying to her or using images but they treat Mary as if she was some irrelevant side character, she wasn't.

I would just like to say i love what youre doing man, i have some mild disagreements as a more conservative baptist, but the boldness to proclaim the gospel in such a vulnerable way is huge. To put yourself out there with how nast comments can be takes courage, and I'm very glad the Lord has blessed you with that, as well as an engaging medium and dialogue.
Man I'm so surprised by how many of the same Christian content creators we both watch. I've been a huge fan of Jordan B Cooper, Gavin Ortlund and Inspiring Philosophy long before I found your channel. But I love how your respect for these creators is just as high as mine. I'm a zoomer too so I'm happy that there are people out there who have gone through a similar spiritual experience to me (although I came out the other side as a Lutheran insted of a Presbyterian).

Obviously, I disagree with much of reformed theology, but I think you are a very important light within mainline Protestantism. Dude this channel is great. I was raised Christian but only now started reading the Bible everyday as well as prey. I feel the hunger for theological knowledge. I feel the need to deeply understand my faith, build it into stone.

This also sparks a good discussion. Some people will say, "I trust only in the Bible as an infallible source" which brings up problems because the Bible doesn't give a list of books to be included in the Bible. So since you have to use other fallible methods to establish the canon, this leaves you with a possibly flawed list of infallible books. Or, in other words, a fallible canon. Something to think abt.

I thought about it like that: In the beginning was the Word -> Jesus came to us, he called 12 disciples -> those wrote epistles and gospels -> other Christians around them also wrote -> every written document of these people (until the death of the last Apostle -> Ephesians 2:20) we have today, that was preserved by the Holy Spirit, is part of the New Testament.
Side Note: The Old Testament was already established since the Hasmonean dynasty. Otherwise 1 Maccabees would claim divine inspiration and not outrightly deny it. -> Scripture in the Old Testament was only written during the time of the Prophets (Ephesians 2:20): from Job to Nehemiah.

What do you think about the other books in the catholic bible (Macabees, Bel and the Dragon, ect). I have no idea about them but I was curious on your viewpoint. Also love your videos, keep up the good work bro!
As originally written, in the language and dialect of the time and place, inerrant Word of God. While people wrote it, and their style and experience come thru, even particular word choices (where more than one word would usually mean the same thing but sometimes would mean something different) were inspired by the author, God. That does mean as language changes, and copies are made... However, we have very good reason to believe the message we receive (as we read today) was and is the message given. The number of copies, from different times, different languages, etc. is immense. That's something you don't get with any other older books. While you can pick on some differences here and there, they really highlight the point I've already made. Moreover, a good reason for this is that there wasn't a printing press, and it was important for people with limited portions of the Word to receive it. to act on it, to live it. Hence, the brothers copied and translated and traveled and shared (The 1st and 2nd century Christian writings from the early church fathers shows that they literally spoke it as well. Every sentence seemed to have quotes from the Word and they were fluent in it like a duck swims in water.). This was much different to the process of preserving and copying the Old Testament where standards of care and accuracy where taken as religiously as their religious beliefs (got a space wrong, start over).
Than why is it that according to the Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls and Josephus all put Goliath’s height at “four cubits and a span” instead of the more recent, Masoretic version’s “six cubits and a span”? There were still mistakes and mistranslations albeit small ones

It's great to hear another young person with the views you're describing, as in it is all centered around Christ. The Bible comes second, Christ comes first. The Bible gains it's authority by its being a continuous narrative pointing toward Jesus and accurately describing virtually all psychological and sociological phenomena.
I don't know about your story, if you have a testimony video, I have not watched it, but I myself was interested in Jesus and the Bible by the time I first began to talk. By my teen years spent time as an atheist studying philosophy and the way many religions are used to control and enslave (I could poke holes in everything but biblical Christianity, by the way, almost all church organizations were not immune, however), then in August 2021, right as I turned 20, I turned to Christ and began to study the Bible.
I agree completely with your analysis, and you articulate it well. It's not something I have ever heard from another in the way you describe, and it is a perspective I came to by taking what I could from different denominational beliefs and secular perspectives and synthesizing them myself with the Bible and the help of God. You are spot on. God bless.

Irish Methodist viewer from Northen Ireland, UK here (independent of the GB Methodist Church so GB votes on same-sex marriage etc don't apply and I think its quite different to the UMC on a number of issues predating Theological Liberalism), really love your stuff and even though I disagree with you on a few issues I love your videos and they're very helpful in getting good information on theology in an easy to engage with format 😊. Are the Protestant churches in Northern Ireland more conservative than the churches in GB? You mentioned that the Methodist church in NI is separate from the rest of the U.K. church but I was curious if that was more of a general thing in Northern Ireland, that all of the churches tend to be more separate and conservative.
Not a Methodist myself but my grandmother who is a Methodist has a transgender pastor, not sure they’re really sticking to the bible.

Largely so, there's obviously a few progressive ministers/rectors even priests but they are predominantly more conservative in Ireland for all four major churches (Methodist, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland ((Anglican)) and Roman Catholic). The Church of Ireland is kind of like the autocephalous churches in Eastern Orthodoxy where it is in communion with the Church of England but not totally bound by it. Presbyterian official church is also totally separate and unique to Ireland. Roman Catholics in Ireland Will obviously have different emphasises than in other Catholic nations despite being in the global church. It will also depend on location usually with more metropolitan areas having more liberal ministers, though most city churches, as well as big churches with large immigrant populations from Fiji or certain African countries etc tend to be conservative too. The most liberal churches would be independent non-denominational ones like the "Non-Subscribing Presbyterian church" which has no creeds so Unitarianism and pride flags etc could be common, though just as possible to be Ultra conservative.
That opening line was a great jab at atheists who say reading the Bible made them leave Christianity.
Also, a (not so) quick plug: the orthodox Jews don't do a whole bunch of studying of Torah (the books of Moses); they do more studying on the Talmud, which is an interpretation of the Mishna, which is the "Oral Torah" they claim God gave Moses at Mount Sinai along with the written Torah. They don't see Jesus in the Tanakh (Old Testament) because they're:
1.) Not all that familiar with the Tanakh itself,
2.) Are trained to not see Jesus in the Tanakh
3.) Don't actually know much about Jesus.
There are various examples of these. For not being familiar with the Tanakh, they often argue that Adam and Eve were doing God's will by eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, because God's purpose for them was to go down to the lowest world and bring it up to heaven. The Garden of Eden was too good, and so they needed to bring sin into the world so the Jewish people could persevere throughout history until the World to Come, where God establishes peace on earth through the Messiah. Or how they interpret Moses as doing the will of God by sinning in the wilderness in striking the rock instead of speaking to it, because his punishment was to die with his people in the wilderness, and thus when the resurrection happens, Moses will be raised and his entire generation with him because he died with them. They often also say that King Ahaz was a good king, and when he refused a sign from God, it was because he had so much faith in God that he didn't need a sign.
They are also trained not to see Jesus in the Tanakh. Every passage that has a clear reference to Jesus, they understand it in the most abstract way. Isaiah 53 they say is about Israel, even though Isaiah is clearly marking the suffering one as dying "for the sins my people." Daniel 9, which predicts the death of the Messiah, they say is about the Priestly line being cut off when the Temple was destroyed. Isaiah 9:6, which calls the Messiah "Almighty God," they say it is the Almighty God naming the Messiah the Prince of Peace. Of course, there is also "The virgin shall conceive" and "They pierce my hands and my feet", which really do have fascinating studies on their own in the Hebrew. Those passages I think both sides have a more honest view on.
But the main thing is that Jews really don't know who Jesus is, and this is for two very sad reasons. The first is because Christians have been absolutely terrible in how we've treated the Jews over the last two thousand years. Jews don't want anything to do with us. The second is that their rabbim are very intentional in keeping Jesus from the discussion amongst the Jewish people. They only talk about him when one of their congregants has questions about Christianity, and then they jump to the most uncharitable depiction of Jesus and Christians imaginable. It is now in the age of the internet where young Jewish people can lock themselves in their bedroom and study Christianity without their parents or Rabbim knowing, that we're seeing a mass wave of Jews coming to faith in Jesus, Yeshua, as His name is in Hebrew. But this is not just true of Jews, but Muslims also. The internet is enabling Muslims to research Christianity away from their parents and Emams as well.
To close, I want to give some advice to people interested in Jewish Ministry. First, be careful, considerate, and compassionate. History has given them good reason to distrust Christians. Don't say the name "Jesus" or "Christ" very often. Yeshua is His Hebrew name, and Messiah (or Moshiach) is the term in Hebrew. "Jesus Christ" is associated with the holocaust and the evils that have been done to them by Christians. Similarly, don't call your ministry a "Crusade". Be careful with the image of the cross, as is seen as a banner of conquest. Just be considerate of their concerns. But also be wise. Their Rabbim have kept Him secret, and they are very antagonistic against Christianity. They will assert their authority over Scripture because they know Hebrew, and they received the full Oral Torah in addition to the Written Torah, but their arguments may not always be honest. Keep this in mind, but remain gentle; don't call them out, but don't be swayed. Don't let them convince you that you need to keep Kosher or celebrate the festivals, -you are a Gentile in Christ and these are not mandated for you, but be willing to keep Kosher and join them in their festivals as a testimony to them (for many Jews themselves do not do these things; how compelling is it when a Gentile to whom it is not required does?). If you believe in Replacement Theology (that the Church has replaced Israel) or any form of Hebrew Israelism (belief that "my people", the ___ race, are the true lost tribes of Israel, and that the commonly recognized Jews are an imposter), then I pray God will convict you of this belief or else keep you far from Jewish ministry (or Jews entirely). Ultimately, be humble and a servant, but firm and steadfast in your beliefs. Jewish/Christian relations are very sensitive, but I am optimistic for the peace I believe God is building between us. Do not call them "Christ killers", or accuse them of killing Jesus. Above all, love them as the Chosen People of God.

Interesting. I've recently been looking into how well the biblical narrative fits with finds from archaeology (about human history and civilizations) of the corresponding timeframes and I can say that it fits pretty well. When taking the rough timeframes given in the Bible at face value (with one exception that I am going to get to in just a moment) there is pretty much always a couple of artifacts and extrabiblical ancient texts that, while not necessarily definitively proving it, definitely show that the biblical event in question is plausible and perfectly fitting into the evidence of that time. This applies to the Tower of Babel, the battle of 9 kings, the Exodus and so on.
There is only one thing that seems weird: the genealogies.
While I can't say anything about the pre-flood genealogy of Genesis 5, because the flood presumably destroyed most of the evidence for pre-flood civilizations anyway, the post-flood genealogy from Genesis 11 (Shem to Abraham) does seem puzzling. The times given appear too short: about 350 years from the flood to the birth of Abraham. When looking at archaeological evidence on when the first cradle of civilization developed (which was Sumer - the culture associated with the Tower of Babel), it appears that the timeframe should be about 10 times as long.
But it's not just that the genealogies seem weird when compared to the extrabiblical evidence. They also appear strange in the context of the bible itself: The book of Ruth gives us a genealogy from Judah's son Perez to king David. When you combine this with the 430 years Israel spent in Egypt (Exodus 12,40) and the 480 years between the Exodus and king Solomon (1 Kings 6,1), you'll notice that it does not contain enough generations to make it fit, because it would imply an average age of at least 104.5 years at the birth of the next generation.
There is also the fact that Matthew's genealogy of Jesus mentions half as many generations as Luke does for the timeframe between the Babylonian Exile and Jesus. Luke's number seems plausible for the given timframe. Matthew's is not impossible, but certainly not probable either.
But here is the thing: we know that the Bible genealogies skip generations. Matthew skipped four of the kings of Judah (for each there is a plausible theological reason for why) and Luke mentions an additional name in the post-flood portion not mentioned in the Old Testament - Cainan (in this case there also appears to be a theological reason for his exclusion in Genesis, because extrabiblical tradition identifies him as the person who reintroduced idolatry and astrology after the flood).
And here is the most interesting thing I noticed: ALL FOUR of these genealogies that I felt like potentially being to short to be complete are 10 generations long!
Genesis 5 (Adam to Noah) > 10 generations + 3 sons
Genesis 11 (Noah/Shem to Terah/Abraham) > 10 generations + 3 sons
Ruth 4 (Perez to David) > 10 generations
Matthew 1 (between Zerubbabel and Jesus) > 10 generations
To be clear: I do believe that every person mentioned in these genealogies is real. But I don't think we should die on the hill that these genealogies are supposed to be complete. I think the Bible itself suggests otherwise. The Bible uses "son of" in both reference to direct fatherhood and more general descent. And this idea pretty much resolves every major chronology problem the Bible appears to have with the archaelogical evidence (of human history). If this idea is extended to the 7 days of creation, that would resolve the evolution discrepancy aswell. Although I don't think it is as clear in that case and will personally refrain from choosing a side.

Really interesting analysis, thank you. I think may people make too big of a deal of trying to paste together genealogies. It’s awesome to realize that they can be both accurate, but incomplete, even by design.
As you mention with the 4 sets of 10, that’s also interesting. I’ve personally been learning recently how the scripture, OT especially, is structured in many ways to aid with its memorization in a primarily oral culture. For example, many of the key numbers used are significant and easy to remember, like 40. It’s not an exact, to 3 significant figures measurement; it’s actually more than that. It’s an approximation meant to demonstrate and draw your attention to something important. So the fact that these genealogies have a set length between key characters really seems to fit this.
I also think this is worth pointing out because I’d never thought about it before until my friend told me, but these genealogies can serve an important purpose for translating the bible from dead languages, as names tend not to change much between languages. Just cool to me to think “why is this included, especially if it’s confusing or incomplete?” Well, maybe it’s a part of God’s plan to provide for the continuance and accurate translation of his Word.
My main thing to take away from this personally is remembering that things we read in the bible like numbers and genealogies are accurate but not necessarily exhaustive.

It fits well with an idea I already had which is that the people in the period when the Bible was first written down had a very different relationship with literature in general. I mean really: what is more interesting to an ancient Israelite from the Iron Age? That the patriarchs became super old and had children at incredibly advanced ages (both things associated back then with divine blessing) or that the numbers can be used to calculate a chronology to do... what exactly? It's not like they had the knowledge of past periods of history that we have now.

I’m sorry, but I think this is a deeply confused view of the Bible. Scripture is clearly historical documentation of eyewitness testimony to the divine. When you read it, you analyze it’s claims and the available evidence in order to decide whether to suspend your disbelief in the supernatural or not.
I am a believer because logic led me to theism independent of the Bible. The universe’s coherence is best explained by a fundamental consciousness creating for a purpose. Once I accepted that axiom, the idea that said consciousness would make itself known amongst its conscious creations became expected. By analyzing the various claims to divine experience, Christianity offers the most comprehensive model to explain all the data.
TLDR: Absent a personal revelation from our Lord Jesus Christ, the only valid epistemic path to faith in him is through scripture. Not the other way around. The Pharisees COULD see Jesus (as the Angel of the Lord) in scripture. It was their own rebellious motivations that blinded them.

I came to Christ in a similar fashion, though I still have doubts. I realized that nihilism was an illogical cope resulting from industrial sterilization. So I looked into Stoicism with the concept of the Logos (the logical principle of reality). It made me realize that the ancients weren't down on shrooms (at least not most of the time) and were actually trying to figure things out.
Same dude, I became a theist through logic. I was a deist, which means I believed in a god, but not a theist god. But by analysing the historical documentation of eyewitness testimony to the ressurection, I became convinced of Christianity.

I believe you’ll be judged according to what you’ve been exposed to. So when the evidence that Jesus is Lord becomes sufficient, if you accept him, you will be saved. If you don’t, you will be given what you want and sent to hell where you can compete with your new neighbors to be your own God.
In an objective sense, literally nobody on this earth is a good person. The only way not go to hell is by God forgiving your sins so that he sees you as good and blameless, so that you are fit for heaven, because not even one sin is allowed in heaven. And the way that that God forgives us is through the sacrifice Jesus did on the cross, which finally enabled everyone who believes to have eternal life (heaven) which is what John 3:16 says
God is the only truly good thing, therefore doing a work not for the good of God is not spiritually good, but rather what modern day calls good. The modern day "good" refers to works that are helpful to other humans. But for a work to be truly good, it must be in representation of God. If you give money to a charity because you want to be "good" you are not doing a good work but a helpful one. If you give money to a charity because you believe God wants you to do it, it is a good work because it is glorifying God's will. Therefore, there are no truly good people, since the human nature is to do helpful works instead of good works. Second, doing good works does not necessarily make you a good person. We are born into sin and therefore are born a bad person, because sin is bad and we are sinful. Every human has broken the majority of the 10 commandments(God's law) and therefore are defined as a bad person. Which is why we need to be saved and forgiven by God to enter his kingdom, otherwise we would be sinful people entering his kingdom and God can not tolerate sin. I respect that there are people who want to understand the Bible and God before they jump into faith. I am a Christian and I think that we should absolutely question our faith. Ok maybe not faith, but what we believe and why. Because maybe we're wrong. And I've questioned different aspects of my religion and how we worship and the presence of evil and how true the Bible is and in what manner. I love questioning. Interesting thoughts. I think the issue a lot of people take issue with on the Neo-Orthodox view of Scripture is not so much how Christo-centric it is, but the adoption of higher-critical views on the Bible's historical origins and accuracy. For instance, critical-scholarly arguments concerning the dating of OT books like those of the Pentateuch to centuries after the events would have taken place cast doubt upon the historicity of these books. So much so that many (or most) critical OT scholars deny a historical Moses/Exodus event. Obviously if the Exodus did not take place this causes significant problems for what is the foundational story of the Israelite identity, and of the story of God's dealings with his people overall. It has massive theological ramifications.

To put it simply, while the Bible does have take-aways of how we should live and how to behave, and while the Bible also has scientific facts that concrete science will not contradict and is a huge historical record, the Bible is a collection of books with its main purpose to teach us about God and who He is. It’s also about, as you say, Jesus and how He has saved humanity from eternal death (the wages of sin is death).
