- I love Street Fighter Alpha 3, and I've got some fairly strong opinions on some of the characters - figured this was as good a subject as any to bring into a Tiermaker ranking!

Oh my god this video wanted to kill me. I lost my progress three times due to crashes. This should have taken an afternoon, and it tended up spreading over three days. I hope you all enjoy. :)

Sagat is my favourite Street Fighter character and was definitely at his best in Alpha 3! I'm glad you put him in top tier👌

Alpha 3, my favourite of all time. I loved using Gen
I respect anyone who rocks Gen. I was always awful with him, so seeing someone weave magic controlling the old man was awesome. Thanks for checking the video out!

The only character I main at SF4 and 5. I'll try him out again once I get to play A3 again.
Up until a month ago...so, for about 25 years...I felt the exact same way about Claw as you do. Then I sat down with him for a week. His alpha 3 version is much less OP than Super Turbo where he is godlike (and I am mainly a ST player) but I sat down for a week or two with him and once I got the muscle memory down for his wall dives and learned how to control him in the air and WHEN to deploy the claw or suplex he became my #1 favorite character instantly. I made it to and defeated Akuma in ST legit with no save states with him shortly after mastering him and I had NEVER made it to Akuma in Super Turbo in all the years since I first played the arcade version in CiCis Pizza in 1994. Sit down with Claw in ST, learn him, and be rewarded. Its all muscle memory and utilizing his toolbox.
His Alpha 3 version is still really good but his wall dive attacks require an extra second of charge and extra fine timing on deploying the claw so be mindful of that. In that regard he is much weaker. Like I said, he is very good in Alpha 3 but absolutely godlike in the right hands in Super Turbo.
Oh, in the right hands, he's absolute money, no doubt. He's just not a character for me, personally. :)

He can't do charge moves. Claw is never going to better than mid for him. Also explains why Boxer and Bison got such low rankings.
What I really enjoyed about Rose is how well balanced and maleable she is. She can reflect fireballs, has throws. Can do long or short distance fighting AND her super combo and zoom across to get the opponent either on ground or air.
She's still a mid character. Ken, Karen, and Cody all tear her up.

Ken was a beast in this. Had it for handheld back in the day.
Alpha 3 is by far the best street fighter game and probably the best fighting game of all time. The home console versions took it to another level with all the added content and extra characters added. As far as characters go, Chun li is basically an S in every street fighter game, I’m also a big cammy fan so I’ll give her an S, Sakura is an S, Ken is an S, Akuma and Ryu are S. The isms definitely make some characters better like I believe Aism and vism zangief is pretty weak but XISM Zangief is a powerhouse and the same can be said for T Hawk and balrog. The game has a ton of depth win air recovery, roll recovery, alpha counter, a guard bar, multiple supers per character in a match with aism(for some reason capcom had decided to stick with one super per match for a character since then) and fantastic music and animations. The psp version has the most content but I’m not a fan of the psp d pad so I’ll recommend play the Saturn version the most for anyone who can find and afford it. The gba version is also a nice port for the game although there are obviously some thing that needed to be cut due to limitations of the gba so be aware of that when playing that version but it’s still a nice port. The ps1 version is a good port as well although load times and some animation cuts have been made to that version. The Dreamcast version is excellent but again not a fan of the Dreamcast controls so I’ll recommend playing that with an arcade stick or buying a peripheral to use another controller. Of course last but not least there’s the alpha anthology collection on the ps2 which has the original arcade port, a port of alpha 3 upper which is essentially the Dreamcast version without the extra game modes and hyper street fighter alpha which is what vampire chronicles for the Dreamcast and Hyper street fighter 2 was which allows you to choose a character from any of the previous games in the series (In this case being Alpha 1, 2, 2 gold and 3) and it also added the soundtrack for that version of the character you choose as well which was a very nice touch. Overall from all my ranting I guess you can tell I’m an alpha 3 fanatic!
Dude, I LOVE your passion for Alpha 3! It's my absolute favorite Street Fighter title as well. :) I have a third party controller for my Dreamcast atht makes it playable, because that OG controller - oof. 100% agreed. :)

I really like R.Mika as a character. I wish she had a bigger role to play in the Street Fighter narrative though
100% agreed! Mika is an awesome character - she's been great in some of the SF comics from Udon, but overall she's very much a C-lister in the grand scheme of their overall mythos.
Dont be bothered by the negative comments and gatekeeping. It is true that your list is actually almost opposite from the general community consensus and the ones put out by american and japanese top players. Its also truth that your breakdown doesnt reflect any aspects of high level play at all, which can be seen as a pity depending on the persons expectation of the video. That however doesnt mean you shouldnt make a video with your personal take on each character based on your own experience. Its a good way to get newcomers and casuals interested in the game, as long as you dont get too serious about it:))

Sorry, just circled back to this video because of someone elses comment about Dan and saw you responded. So, let me rephrase what I'd said:
There's nothing to be taken seriously or with any sense of credibility with this list. I say in the video that it's not a measure of characters competitiveness, just a ranking on how I like them. Dan is 100% an S tier character for me, because he's both an interesting character from both a presentation and a story perspective and he's fun to play in the game. There's a reason he elevates and is played constantly by me and not someone like Evil Ryu. I'm by no means the be-all, end-all of SFA3 opinion pieces - I'm just a dude who likes a game and likes particular characters. :)

20:05 "Zangief sucks, he's an F". That is cutting good sir. Granted I see your point on his moves, it took me a long time in order for me to do the grappler staples like the 360 motions in "Alpha 3" compared to newer fighting games, like "Street Fighter 4", which were far more forgiving in that regard.
I stand by what I said, as flawed as my logic may be. Love the character (despite my brusqueness) but I hate playing him, and stand in absolute awe and admiration of those who can.
SF6 they made it cake to do the inputs but back then yeah half the battle with him is just being able to do the moves themselves

I would say that my top 5 are
1. Chun Li. She's been my main since SFII.
2. Shin Akuma (although the Alpha 2 version was better in my opinion)
3. Cammy
4. Sagat
5. Blanka
Chun Li is really my only must have in any game. If she isn't in the game, I probably won't be interested

I came from a generation when girls were generally discouraged from being in arcades, although I was accepted by the guys most of the time because I was good enough to play competitively. It was my family that didn't always approve of my "unladylike interests" lol. Before SFII, Tyris Flare was my main in Golden Axe, which is still one of my favorite games. Then I saw Chun Li and it was all over. She's my ride or die for 30 years now. That's why I couldn't be bothered with the first SF III, 😂.I still can't believe it's been three decades since Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat(my other favorite fighting game franchise,) debuted, and both are still going strong. Oh and I love the Soul Calibur series. I have since passed my love for Chun Li on to my son. I really do miss the arcade scene. Competing online is ok, but it's just not the same as hanging out with friends.
You only say this because she is a perfected designed character, with great gameplay, beautiful moves and amazing charisma.

I never liked boxing characters because of Balrog. He just isn't fun. I changed my opinion recently with snk characters Vanessa and Heavy D. And now Dudley since I started playing SF3 3rd Strike recently.
Dahlsim and Fei Long are just fun in this game.

I have enjoyed a couple of the Street Fighter series, but fighting games have never been my forte. My favorite character that I have played in Street Fighter is Blanka, only because for me, his moves were the easiest to do for me.

Ah yes, a fellow design enjoyer! My choices are also _very_ idiosyncratic and "this character is boring" is for me a way more compeling reason than "not high tier material" when comes to play. And hard-learning characters are apparently my honeypot, since I choose them for the looks and moves just to learn that they only work if you concentrate on them and then I am stuck with them FOR LIFE. Oh, hi X-ISM Chun-Li, didn't see you there. Funny enough, many of them are charge-motion ones! Also I play Zero 3 on a keyboard and they are better to pull of with this limitation.
Soo my favorite characters, in no order:
• Juni in V-ISM. played with her in Playstation to great effect, but her Air Cannon Spike doesn't go! And still can't pull Earth Direct on keyboard. Lovely easy to do her Custom Combo.
• Chun-Li in X-ISM. Pressure, pressure, pressure. Spinning Bird Kick. MORE PRESSURE.
- Chun-Li in Z-ISM. Useful supers and I love her sprite charging Hazan Tenshoukyaku. So much I can pull it on keyboard. I don't believe it, too.
• Gen in A-ISM. One of my favorite characters ever. Not "favorite videogame characters", just favorite character. Everything about him is full of awesome badassery.
• Balrog in V-ISM. My first choice back 1992 when my first coin dropped in the slot, because he is masked and have ridiculously sharped claws. And great design. And speed. And Counter Hits. And Scarlet Terror.
• Nash in V-ISM. Grew fond of him lately. I love his sprites and it's really good to make EVEN MORE PRESSURE in the way to the corner!

I didn’t get into fighting games until Mk9 but now I’ve been really wanting to get into all the best 2d fighters! I started spending a lot of time in DBFZ and just downloaded the street fighter 30th anniversary collection. I think alpha 3 is going to be the first one I focus on and I’m very excited to learn and practice in this game! Still can’t pick a main though!
The best thing I can say about Alpha 3 is to just enjoy your time with it - because the game is superlative. My absolute favorite Capcom fighter. :)
Just recently discovered this game, really enjoying it and the full cast of classic characters! That said, I actually laughed at how opposite your list is from my own so far.
You rank most of my favorite low, and praise many that I find terrible. Lol
LOL, nothing wrong with that! The beauty of having a roster as massive and diverse in play styles as Alpha 3 is that there's something for everyone - it's a smorgasbord of characters. :D

Charlie is not D-tier he is competitive with the top tiers. This video is based on opinion not that of the competitive community. Sodom, Dhalsim and Akuma are all top.
Dan's actually my favorite Street Fighter character funny enough.

I genuinely want to be good with Vega too just the actual application of him is extremely tricky. His play style can be absolutely busted with V ism but just the basic specials with him are tough to pull off
The last time I played SFA3 I was maybe 10 (now about to turn 27) and I really struggled with most characters' moveset, but with Sagat, I was able to kick all kinds of ass. Therefore he will forever be my favorite. Balrog might be my second favorite for similar reasons, along with him being loosely based on Mike Tyson.
Dan Hibiki and Rose are my 2 favorite Alpha characters.. i like the whole roster equally
Sakura is definitely S tier. My favorite throughout all the SF.

Been playing Alpha 3 for years but usually just the Arcade Mode or against friends who don't play as much fighting games.
Never had a real main in this game but since I started playing Online I tried learning more complex combos for chun li.
Always loves zangief cuz I thought the Spinning Piledriver was very fun to do. Now against real human players it isn't quite as easy.
Very interessting video. Sagat was always my least favourite in alpha 3 just because of how slow he is. Also I get the feeling you really hate charge characters lol. I actually prefer them mostly and find them easier to use across most fighting games. But I can never get the diagonal charge supers to work
Guilty - charge characters are the bane of my existence in fighting games! I'm a quarter-circle/half-circle player, so I tend to gravitate to the Ken's and Ryu's of the world. :) Thanks for checking out the video!
balrog actually has a nice story in 5 with ed and urien, same philosophy but a bit of development

I know he sucks but its a love hate with his turn punch. I love unloading "final!!" At the last min when honda is about to land his bullet attack.
Hey just curious since you like fighting games like me and seem to like KOF and fatal fury characters, what is your favorite fatal fury game? I know most people say mark of the wolves but to me Real bout fatal fury special is the best fatal fury game. It has great animations, music, a nice selection of characters and the gameplay is fast while also being very intuitive. I don’t think any fatal fury comes close to it not even it’s sequel Real bout fatal fury 2 which has similar feel to it with extra characters but loses its smooth and fast gameplay.
Oh man - favorite Fatal Fury? That'd probably have to be Real Bout 2 for me, I LOVE Li Xiangfei, and her being introduced there makes it special for me. I also love that Billy and Joe remain playable. :)
@@SquarePegs I’m happy you mentioned real bout 2 as that’s my second favorite in the series. There’s just something about real bout special though that I prefer over it, maybe because I just feel the gameplay is faster and it’s easier to do combos. But either or they’re both excellent games. Mark of the wolves although it plays very well, the art style just doesn’t do it for me and when I get used to playing with certain characters in the franchise and you leave me with just terry as the only original character with a bunch of news guys and gals it definitely takes away from my enjoyment of the game
@@stevesteve0521 I thought the same about Mark of the Wolves but sat down and started learning the game recently. It changed my mind. Several of the characters play a lot like the other Fatal Fury cast.
I think I still prefer Real Bout 2, only because I do not own the other Real Bout games.
@@SquarePegs Li Xiangfei and Rick Stroud are awesome and the whole reason I like RB2 so much. Haven't played the other 2 because I thought those two characters looked so good!

@multiplemanarmy Eagle wasn't in the Dreamcast version, unfortunately. I know he's not in the Arcade port that I have on the 30th anniversary collection. I think him, Yun, Ingrid, and Maki got added to the PSP version. If they're in the DC version, I completely missed them!

1. I main Thawk
2. T hawk is THERE cause Juli is brainwashed by bison and she is one of the Thunderfoot Tribe members that has gone missing according to his father
3. His condor dive is an aerial move you can do to space yourself against zoners he's like Zangief but can fly and has some nasty damage with Xism
4. Thank you for the SFA content there's not a lot and I just recently got back into the game! ^^
5. People are being way to mean to you in the comments please don't stop making videos about this if you like it!

I just never got into fighting games like this. Guess I never spent enough time to learn any moves so it would always devolve into button smashing. There were a couple that I played a little. As a kid I would get to play Mortal Kombat I at friends' houses. That seemed to be my friends favorite at the time. Kinda enjoyed Sonya and Sub Zero. Also when I got the Gamecube I picked up Soul Caliber II since Link showed up in it but Cassandra was the one I most enjoyed playing.
What little story I have seen in these kinds of games is interesting but never felt like they had any connection to the game. It would be something like Character A is trying to find Character B but nothing special happens in the game when playing as Character A and he/she ends up fighting Character B in round 5 of the tournament. I am not asking for much maybe just a line of dialogue or two. *shrugs*
Really my only connection to Street Fighter was the Heroclix set. I did have fun playing a few games with the characters.
I LOVE that Clix set. I wish we'd gotten more than just that single release.
Fighting games aren't for everyone, and you should feel no regrets about not playing them if they don't ring any bells for you. :) Play what you love, that's all that matters!

Also , you mentioned you never played the gba and psp versions of the game . Fair enough but ! Did you formulate your opinion based on the ps1, ps2, PS4/switch/Xbox one, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast , cps2 versions of the game ?
A mix of PS1 (where I first played it), Dreamcast (where I've most often played it), and Switch (where I've most recently played it). Fantastic question!

If Mike Haggar appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3 then he will probably be an F tier Character because he has the same move set as Zangief.
For me at least, sure. I've never been good at those delay input characters.

Omg yes. Someone who can clearly see how overrated Guile is. I like his design(cool Jojo inspiration) but man... boring to fight and has achieved NOTHING in the story of the series at all. People really just hold him up in high regard because of the nostalgia they have for 2 and they just tell themselves he's a badass when he's nothing at all.

I won't lie, the lore behind Dan's father and Sagat are a big part of why I love them both so much - that deep hatred makes for such a great story opportunity, and the fact that it's held by Dan being the ultimate dork just makes it that much better. :D Thank you so much for watching!

No problem! Your list was great and refreshing. Usually people just praise 2's cast and don't hold the sequels' characters in the same light except for the obvious Sakura, Juri, etc... so it's nice to see someone with a different opinion

It's my opinion, bud. My opinion on which characters I like playing, nothing more. If they're S for you, awesome. They aren't for me. Ryu has never been my shotokan guy, because I think he's as interesting as watching paint dry. And when you stick him in his My Chemical Romance phase, he's even less interesting.
My favorite character will always be Ken

@@SquarePegs balrog is pretty great he hits really hard zangief, dj, guile, Charlie kind of and yun to these character are charge characters which means this here is the trick they are like Mayweather they play defense do use them and block wait for opponents to hit first then strick it’s really fun

It's a tiermaker ranking. Pretty much 100% opinion. I mention in the video that it's not based on characters competitive nature and that it's all my opinion. Otherwise, Dan wouldn't be landing an S rank.

You're 100% correct. Though I never intended this to be a basis for competitive character comparison, I didn't do a good job explaining that fact, for which I apologize.

That's what l liked about it the most.
To be fair competitive gameplay isn’t really a big assessment tbh. V Ism which is the most played competitively can make even low tier characters like Sagat go up a level. The line between Mid tier and high tier in this game isn’t really as set and stone as it is with other titles.
Terrible list my guy. Get good then redo. But good call on Karen and Ken. I was like nooo don't do it ... And you didn't . Btw the pile driver move you only mention on Zangief. Honda, Sodom, and T Hawk have it as well... I think another does also but can't remember which it was. Also Akuma has one in a sense. If you start with towards them and roll down and away you have a super cool Hurricane kick that goes up and then down on the back side of the opponent. It's very hard to do and I don't think it was an original designed move but it works for some reason.

Might be a lame list for you, but I didn't set out to make a list for you, LL - I ranked every character for me. Like any ranking video - this is 100% an opinion piece, and if my opinion is that a piledriver or charge character sucks because I don't have the dexterity or rhythm to pull off their moves? Then that's true for me. Your opinion is different? Go ahead and do your own list, bud. I'd love to watch it. And I mean that - I actually enjoy seeing differing opinions from my own.
And my guy, the tiger knee is just a dragon punch with some extra gravy. I've legit never had an issue pulling that move off.

Nah. Dan's legit fantastic. He's fun to play, ads some levity to the game, and actually lends some challenge to the standard shoto-snore of Ryu, Ken, and Akuma. He's an S for me.
