  • Hello and welcome to our channel!
Happy Wednesday. Today, we're going to be reacting to some musical theatre fails and Ryan will even be sharing one of his own! It's only fair :) As we say in the video, we are not making fun of any of the performers here. Accidents happen! It's a part of live theatre, so join us in reacting to some!
Thank you to Carter Henley for creating such a great compilation!

The Shrek "show must go on" moment really reminded me of Starkid's Trail to Oregon. There is a clip where the Grandpa character's fake beard falls off, and he very quickly puts it back on and tells the other characters "don't tell nobody about this"

I have a wonderful example of "The Show Must Go On" mentality in theater! When I was in middle school, we did a version of The Sword and the Stone where I played Merlin the Magician (Yes, as a 12 year old girl, I played a very old man). There was one scene in which I was supposed to knock out this villager and steal their horse so that I could get to Arthur and warn him about something as quickly as possible. Being middle school, our theater department was really low budget, so the horse was just a horse mask on a stick. In one performance, I "knocked" the villager out and as she was falling to the stage, I grabbed the horse. Unfortunately, I grabbed the mask instead of the stick, so the head came off in my hand. I froze for a second, in front of about 200 of my peers, then grabbed the stick from the villager, looked at the person on stage with me, said "I guess I'll have to walk anyway," then walked off stage. When I came back onstage in my next scene, and asked my partner how long I had taken to get there, he said "27 minutes, you might have gotten there in time if you hadn't killed the horse." The original line was simply, "17 minutes, too late." From this point on I was known as "Horse Murderer" by all my classmates.

yea speaking of "the show must go on" mentality. one time we were doing godspell (i was the asm) and one of our dancers somehow DISLOCATED HER SHOULDER. she finished the number while it was still dislocated, and thankfully we had a veteran war medic who put it back into place. she ran of stage, he put it back in, she made not ONE SOUND, and finished the rest of the show.

Oh god, I remember a similar situation from my freshmen year. We were doing Taming of the Shrew with a Viking theme, and during the wedding, Petrukjo slaps his servant Knut across the face. On opening night, that slap was so hard, that Knut’s jaw actually dislocated. He just popped it back during intermission and kept going through the entire show, even though he was in pain the entire time. Don’t know if I would’ve been able to do the same thing if I was in his shoes.

I love the "the audience actually loves theatre mishaps" mentality - I wish that translated to more aspects of theatre, such as a better understanding of the backstage work, especially concerning who stage managers are and what they do. It's easy to get caught up in the actors in front of you; sometimes I wish audiences were more exposed to mishaps - and even simply backstage practices - as a reminder that we're not seeing magic - we're seeing *people*.

    • @mysub2010
      @mysub2010 3 роки тому +18

I completely understand your view. I think, from the performance and backstage side, there is a slight confrontation there. The performer and crew have worked months/years to make the show perfect. Musical Theatre is popular with wide audiences because it's flashy, clean, large scale and perfect. We see quick changes, large scale set appearances and slick dance routines. I think MT sometimes shoots itself in foot because as a genre it doesn't allow itself space for things to go wrong. Musical Theatre takes itself quite seriously because the genre is doing well. Only now are we starting to see a more post modern perspective. Also, the amount of money we have to pay to go watch top tier MT, I want to see them enjoying themself and doing a good show!
Also, as in every proffession, not everyone is interested in the same thing. I've never looked into how pens are made but I still use them and expect them to work how they should. But a pen proffessional might be like "No you need to understand how they work to unlock its full potential".
      Anyway, just a few thoughts.

I was in a production of Cinderella Jr back in 1st grade. It was my first production I had ever done, and somehow I got Cinderella. Anyway, during Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo the Fairy Godmother smacked me in the face with her wand, so that was fun. Later on, when I was running from the ball, in my struggle to get my shoe off on purpose, I tripped and fell down the stairs. Me being the first grader I was broke character, wanting to let the audience know I was alright, and said “I'm okay.” I then gathered myself up and ran backstage, where I felt upset and my director then proceeded to hug me and say that Cinderella would totally have done that when she was running. My own theatre fail story: My friend and I were on stage crew (prop team, specifically) in middle school. We were doing Mary Poppins, and my friend was moving one of the garden wall sections with plants on it. But in one blackout transition, the entire ensemble had to be reshuffled and ppl were moving on and off stage, and my friend had to help move a few things, so they turned the lights back on while she was still trying to move the wall and she had to duck behind it, but one of the plants was falling off the top so she had to hold it up so it didn't fall and distract the actors and the audience. She was stuck behind the prop holding that plant for that whole scene.

9:46 *SPOILERS FOR PIPPIN* my highschool put on a production of Pippin... and in the scene where Pippin is supposed to stab his father (the king), the king had a piece of foam under his costume so the fake sword would stick... however, the king picked up the fallen sword and stared at Pippin and said “look at you, you can’t even stab a man” and “killed himself”...
also my middle school did a production of The Lion King and whenever Scar sends the hyenas after Simba, Ed was “asleep” in Scar’s throne and missed his cue to leave so Scar just turned to him and snapped his fingers in front of Ed’s face... Ed’s eyes snap open and Scar says “Good morning, sunshine, have a nice sleep?”, Ed nods and Scar sighs deeply and responds “i don’t care! now, go!” and Ed runs off stage😂

Staying in character recoveries: My senior year of HS we did It's a Wonderful Life. The actor who played Potter (a wheelchair-bound character for those who may not know) was able-bodied, 6'3 and a bigger guy, so he always walked on set and then settled into the chair if he was on stage at the start of a scene.
In the scene during which George Bailey goes to beg Potter for money to save the Building & Loan, the crew brought the lights up before Potter was seated, obviously getting a response from the audience. The actor who played George had his head down cause he already was in character getting ready for the big emotional monologue his character has, so he didn't see it. Potter quickly sat down in the wheelchair, and by the time George looked up (upon hearing the audience's reaction), he was none-the-wiser.
Potter said (with a Obi-Wan Kenobi-esque hand wave), "George, you saw nothing." George replied, "Huh? what?" which had the audience dying of laughter and the scene was off to the races from there.

I relate to the falling onstage thing so much. In one of my most recent shows, I had a scene where I chased another character with a broom and there had been a cloth from a previous scene on the floor of the stage that the tech crew hadn't taken off so when I was running I tripped and fell. Apparently it looked like it was supposed to happen so all was well but my friends now pretty much bet on if I'm going to fall or not.

I am the child of a props master, so I thought I knew how that worked where actors put their props back on the rack when they are done with a scene. Luckily It was only the first day of teck week but while doing elf I didn't actually know what props we had, and buddy decided to do the Santa fight with a real snow globe in his bag. Breaking it. They also didn't tell us the food props were also there so me and the other person doing props got yelled at for dirty dishes left on the set piece bar counter.

I was in a production of Singing in the Rain our whole motto for the show was “the show must go on”. We had many mishaps, but they were all handled very professionally. My favorite was when we had a technical issue and all the lights went out. The actor playing Cosmo said “Well I guess you forgot to pay the power bill again R.F.”. Then ran and turned the lights back on and the audience absolutely loved it!

Ryan is SO right. When Aladdin came to our town the hydraulics for the cave of wonders set wasn’t working so the scene change took longer and they eventually stopped the song and the actors left the stage.....for a good intermission-sized portion of time. Lucky audience getting that extra bathroom break. Lol. But then Adam Jacobs came back in stage and the song resumed and EVERYONE applauded and it was awesome. Haha

I remember seeing if/then and Idina forgot a prop, and basically (in her words after the curtain), took a sledgehammer to the fourth wall. They started the scene over and then Idina joked about it on the second take. Definitely made the show memorable. Everyone laughed (even the people onstage) and it just looked like they were just having fun.

The “show must go on” moment reminded me of when I was in high school our director used to came to the back to talk to us(sound and lights). She made the light person missed her cue in Harvey. So, one of the actress had to be like “Why are y’all sitting in the dark” IT WAS HILARIOUS
The improv of that moment was ✨IMPECCABLE✨

I actually just recently went to a local production of Heathers, and as they were performing an alarm in the building started going off everyone just kind of continued singing and looked around. The stage manager got everytone to exit the stage. They evacuated the theater, took everyone out then they made sure it was safe. We went back in and they started the scene over. It was all very professional and didn’t ruin the show in any way. Not only that, but it was a theater that had multiple productions going on so they had Heathers Addams family, a young kids show about trees or something and something that had ghost in it
Add the theater was in a mall so we all had to go out in the parking garage

It was convenient that I had the role and he wasn't a young dog so he would definitely come and follow everyone, but rehearsals were so fun having this tiny shih zhu running around. It was also slightly funny to see as the kid being the dog pound guy was a bit iffy around dogs (max did help with that which was nice)

I’ve had a few theatre fails of my own. I think the biggest one I’ve had was “the curse.” So I was in The Jungle Book Kids production and at the end of The Barenesesstiies we’re all supposed to be lying down on the stage while the monkeys came and took mowgli. And when we woke up I kept hitting my head on the box behind me. It happened a lot during rehearsals. But then it actually happened during one of our show dates and I hit my head a lot harder this time. I had a headache pretty much throughout the rest of the show. It was awful. I think the reason I was cursed was because at one point during rehearsals when we were supposed to be scared of Shere Khan, I moved my body a little too close to this pole next to me that it fell over. But luckily someone slid over and caught it. But anyways that’s one of my theatre incidents.

I have seen Frozen at the Hyperion many times, and I've seen two seperate fails. One time Elsa was on the ice stairs in the middle of Let it Go, and the stairs suddenly stop rotating, and she was just trapped on the stairs while the mechanics tried to get it moving again. In the second fail, the Olaf puppet stopped working, almost like the joints were stuck, so as hard as the puppeteer tried, he couldn't get Olaf's limbs to move, but he was a really good sport about it, and just pretended it was so cold that Olaf was frozen. Both times it was fixed pretty quickly, so good job Disney

I was in Beauty and the Beats and I played Lefou and there was this scene where the Gaston and Lefou got together with this evil guy and planned something to attack the castle, and the evil guy(I forgot the characters name) was like 5 minutes late to go on stage. And this whole scene was timed with music and lines, so me and the Gaston just went out by ourselves and tried to put on something. I remember being so proud because I made up a line that made the audience laugh and I was so happy. So, this wasn't during a show, but an audition. During the acrobatics portion, I fell into my backbend and somehow, because of nerves, got stuck, fell flat on my face, and flipped over bodyslamming the floor. The entire room was just silent. I played it off (though I was in a daze) and did some kicks and walked back to my spot. And everyone was just silent. No polite clapping, no nothin. Just a bunch of "are you alright, that looked like it hurt"? 🤣 To make it even funnier, I got the Grinch.

An example of “the show must go on” that I experienced was when I played Jonathon in A Christmas Carol the Musical. I had a couple short solos. Closing night, I got a really bad cold. I could hardly sing. However, my double was not there that day. She was sick. So, I had to do the show. I was so nervous about trying to sing my solo that I missed my entrance. No one in the audience noticed, but the director did. When I was in the green room, laying down because I didn’t feel well, the director thought I was sulking and gave me a whole lecture about not getting upset when your performance didn’t go well. I was so annoyed until I finally said “I’m not sulking, I’m just sick!”

My guess for what happened on the Peter Pan one, when the window falls is, from other versions of this story I have seen done on stage and movie, Peter is SUPPOSED to fly through the nursery window to find Wendy, and like you said, the set was not secured properly, and rather than hitting his mark and going THROUGH the opening, he crashed right into it. Or perhaps the harness he was rigged to got caught on the set and it fell.

My brother was in Pippin once with his friend and his friend played Pippins brother. So there was this scene where pippins brother is chasing pippin around with a sword, but while he’s doing this the sword breaks and flies onto the audience. He panicked for a second before he started to cry which caused everyone audience and actors to start laughing. (Well actors tried their best not to) but what made it golden was when pippins mom goes and comforts pippins brother saying, “it’s okay sweetie, we’ll get you a new one.” And after that they went on from there.
