As a longtime fire investigator I can tell you that it is not uncommon for people to bootleg electricity (or cable) from another apartment. If so I’m curious about why the fire would start in a hallway. 🚒

Obviously there was some illegal tapping going on and I wouldn't be surprised if the property owner was also stealing power for the hallway lights.

The major problem the arson Lieutentant had was that the closet where the fire originated had no electrical connections running to or through the space. That's why I am suspicious of an electrical fire in a residence with no electrical power,unless they had a generator running near by.
