After the 50D having been able to shoot RAW for almost five months, there still hasn't been a full blown review. So I did my best to make one. My thoughts on the RAW capabilities of the Canon 50D. If you have questions, ask them in the comments!

Impressive video. Well Done Paul!
excellent video,,i learned more from your video than the magic lantern site,I'm pressed to get a 50d,the video out of this still camera is excellent.
This video is on point, thank you dude
Great video Paul...
there are so many basic tutorials, once you learn basics, here is a good tutorials working with raw
after learning resolve i shoot all my videos in raw only and never wanted to go back and shoot in h264
since the workflow is very fast in resolve. processing a clip or 2 is ok in after effects or lightroom but if you shoot
a short film or a music video, it wil take so many days. i take only 2 hrs color grading a short film in resolve which has
100 clips
How to Color Grade RAW from Blackmagic Pocket Camera 4K
I agree with you. I wish past me took the time to learn it haha
this workflow takes a long long time. i prefer using davinci resolve since it takes very short time. i use resolve for grading whether i shoot in h264 or raw. so for me, time consume to edit raw and h264 takes the same time
I have heard that. I also understand one could use the LUT's in that process as well. But I have also heard that ACR's debayering process is a bit better (that could be totally wrong). Anyway, I don't really understand the resolve workflow, or even how to use it. Do you know of any good tutorials of working with RAW in resolve?
thank you very much
Thank you for that great review!
Have you tried RAW video in crop mode? According to the ML team the resolution in crop mode is 2000x1080. But trying very short clips with my 500D (as far as my buffer would take me) in crop mode, I was disappointed with the quality. What's your take on that?
I have used it in crop mode, but it is zoomed in a lot. I also have not tried using anything higher than 1600 resolution though. I van shoot at like 1536x768 (essentially 720p) so I don't see a reason to go any higher). But my opinion on this camera has changed. I love it and shoot RAW all the time. Although there is lots of moire. But I plan on making an update review in the future.
***** cool! Have you tried the VAF filter by mosaicengineering yet? It's supposedly great at removing moire.
I thought about getting it, but the problem is that this is only a $400. So buying a $270 fix for moire doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think that money would be much better spent elsewhere. But knowing there will be aliasing is half of the battle. So I do my best to avoid it.
good stuff man thanks for sharing!
great vid thanks
i just buy my 50d with 17-85mm canon lens..is magic lantern safe to install in 50d?
were you using premiere cc ? in order to import all the dng files from each video file such as 4gb etc, do you select the folder ? i`m asking how does rawnizer and/or premiere know these 9000 dng files are from one video from the camera?
amazing
Great info!!!
I'm looking at this card to use with my 50d to do tutorials and add audio later. Is this a good selection?: Lexar 32GB Professional 1066x Compact Flash Memory Card (UDMA 7) . write speed 155mb
great review! I read 50d doesn't support exFat, so you can record maximum 4gb (about a minute in raw). Is it possible overcome this issue?
You can, all canon uses FAT32 and it will automatically split up the files into fragments of 4GB each. Just download file joiner software to join all fragments as one file.
thanks for the information!
Hi, my 50D doesnt auto focus when recording video. Is this a problem for you too?
It never will from my understanding.
do you recommend magic lantern? i only have 1 camera (50d) and i dont have enough to replace it but i really want to do some timelapses. would recommend magic lantern or should i just get a intervelometer
100% you also wouldn't be able to get the intervalometer to shoot fast enough either. I've had no issues with ML personally on multiple different Canon cameras.
+Paul Goodyear thanks for the reply!
nice
Is it any risk of using Magic Lantern??? And do I need the newest firmware on the camera? I cant download it....
There is a risk involved, but I haven't heard any reports of damaged cameras. Magic Lantern is just some files on a card. So if something does happen, pull out the battery and put another card in. Then your camera is back to normal. You can download ML at magiclantern.fm after it is installed you need to go download the "nightly build" and copy/replace those files on your card.
But do I need the newest firmware?
Thanks so much btw :)
Does anyone know what bandwidth the 70D has?
I assume it has about 40MBps according the chat that I found in the ML forums
What lens you used ?
Abdulghani Alrabghi Hey, I have no idea. This was about a year and a half ago. It probably was like a $50 old SLR lens though.
i have a 60d i can just grab for 1 min at 846p, you can do better?
try cropping it so that it is wide-screen, or try shooting at 20fps fo bit longer recording.
Yes I think this camera can shoot up to like 1200p. The issue is the horizontal resolution is limited to 1500ish.
