If you want a direct comparison look at the 1st vs the 2nd Bled test this year and that is not an anomaly, happens every time, that’s why the ABs have a better win rate when Papali’i starts over Cane. The difference in workrate between the two will blow your mind. In NZ, Harmon, Christie and Kirirfi all do more than Cane in Soup rugby, who has the worst stats in the comp amongst kiwi opensides. Good insight on Indecision, warrior mentality and work rate. The Tamaiti and ALB effort plays were immense and what a luxury to bring on a fresh Whitelock at the tip of a game. The bomb kicks are proving effective v NH defences also, boks did the same to france. The 50/50 nature of the bomb creates enough uncertainty to rattle northern teams. Keep it up bro and up the Mighty Abs, 2 more games!!

    From an Irish perspective i thought there was one great opportunity lost a few phases before the Whitelock steal when Garry Ringrose cut in and took on the defence rather than pass to a fading Hugo Keenan who had a bit of space with Scott Barrett defending. Not saying he would have beat him but this would have been a chance to get a half gap and maybe an offload or pop off the ground to get behind the NZ line and on the front foot. This is the type of pass youve got to be willing to take to win the game rather than being too conservative and waiting for a mistake that didnt come. Again great stuff

    I've watched this series of phases a few times and still get goosebumps at that final tackle when Whitelock locks onto that ball. One tactic that I noticed Ireland employed alot in the kick defence was the retiring Irish players actively covering the eventual landing point and receiver of high balls. While I can't recall which player it was, but an AB was penalized for "changing their line" to do exactly the same tactic. The Irish players weren't guilty of changing their lines, but on more than one occasion created screens for their kick receivers. Were they breaking the rules here, or just pushing the limits of the laws? South Africa often do something similar, but have a player intentionally run past the landing point of the ball, feigning to catch it, but instead obstruct kick chasers from the opposition.

    With 3 minutes to go I absolutely thought it was wrong to kick away possession. We should’ve rumbled up the field and ate the clock.
    Arron probably felt the same and I’m not sure whether he was relieved after the game because of his sin or kicking away possession. I would say it was the latter.

      I would have preferred we kicked as deep as possible rather than merely to the ten metre mark.
      I don't think Ireland could have made it from their own goal line.
      Sexton should have been subbed; in fact I think Ireland will conclude when they review their campaign that they should have rotated more players.
      I hope Foster and co don't make the same mistake versus Argentina.

      Outstanding

      I thought it was a calculated decision with the aim of earning an ABs line out. Aaron aimed for that space around 2-3m from the touch line and near the 10m mark inside the Irish half. It's contestable running distance for ALB, and if he couldn't catch it - it's close enough to touch that they could try to drive the Irish receiver out. Aaron made a similar kick about 10 min earlier and earned a line out throw for the team up the field.

    As defensive stands go, this one is definitely up there. Longest by duration, certainly, and also high high quality.
    I am reminded of a couple of others, though. Argentina holding Ireland out a few years back in a WC - I seem to recall Keith Wood playing that game - where it was wave after wave after wave of green pounding on the try line right at the death, and the Argentina defence was impervious.
    Also, there was an ENG v SA game a few years back, where England had the longest advantage known to man trying to breach the line but they couldn't get through and eventually went back for the pen.

    Some things mentioned is just overthinking it, over analysing some things that just happened and was the players own personal decision. At the end it should have been a penalty against Ardie because once he released the player, he had to come in front back to play the ball. He jumped in from the side. I think ref was fair to give benefit of the doubt both ways

  • @subhuman119
    @subhuman119 10 місяців тому +15

    I've been saying this since our loss to South Africa in Twickenham. The AB's defense is solid, and here's a few reasons why.
    Against South Africa, they only got over our line, with all the dominance they that night, once the AB's were down to 13 men (After two yellow cards). During the entire second half, against 14 men, they only managed 21 points. South Africa should have scored more than that. That's how good the AB's defense was in that warm up game.
    Against France, it took them 56 minutes to break our line and score their first try. That's how good the AB's defense is.
    Against Ireland in that last passage of play, they showed exactly why defensively they are an absolute powerhouse.

    • @HakatimeRugby
      @HakatimeRugby  10 місяців тому +2

      I remember that! and i felt the All Blacks looked really composed and confident in that defensive stand too. Its was a great sign leading in to the World Cup. But ultimately defending with 14 men drained the tank and the boys weren't able to sustain that effort. So in short, weve seen two big defensive stands from teh ABs and if they can keep away from a yellow card they'll be hard to crack in a semi or final!

    Really good analysis! Honestly didn't notice the Tamaiti Williams tackle on Aki, if he wasn't there to make that hit Aki would've been in space to run because it was a broken play. If Aki did make some big meters as he's shown he can, that momentum shift could've cost us the game

  • @truthseeker7322

    From phase 22 onwards was an absolute nightmare for the all blacks. At least 4 times the ref allowed play to carry on. Ardie had the ball. Loved what smith did. Passion and mind on the job. He knew they were ripped but also knew the ref aint budging. Great performance by the All Blacks. 14 men for twenty mins, playing against 16 players, the ref doing everything they could to varry ireland home😡

    Great thoughts on why Smith kicked posession away but another option could have been 2-3 more phases then kick for touch deep in Irelands 22. Their lineouts weren't going well so the ABs challenge and if they get it game over if Ireland get it they need to go almost 70 odd metres.
