  • Run Rabbit Run 100 miles Ultra Marathon is a famous Trail Running race in Steamboat, Colorado. Ultra Running at altitude comes with its share of unique challenge - like bad weather...
Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link

I fell in love with this race after Brendan Leonard How To Run 100 Miles. For me, my trail running adventure was one of struggles - it was only 6 days after running 100 miles in Wasatch and completing a season with both Leadman / Leadville and Grand Slam of Ultrarunning. Let's just say I had my fair share of trail running already - but I guess ultrarunners don't know how to say no.
So why I still race Run Rabbit Run? It's actually the first 100 miles I signed up for - back in 2019 for Sept 2020. But, as we all know, 2020 didn’t exactly go as planned… And here we are, 2022, with now 17 x 100 miles under my belt and a year already filled with cool challenges. I could just sit this one out - and probably even *should*. But, … what the hell! Let’s give it the good old college try!
And amazingly, my body felt great - all things considered - for a very long time. I had some tenderness in both of my Achilles and both ITB, but if anything, it felt better than at Wasatch as I was more careful. What I hadn’t planned on was horrendous weather - rain, hail, wind and cold! It was all over the place, changing drastically within minutes throughout the full race - including the night. Wet feet, wet shirt, and I still get service!
Of course, you can only escape reality for so long. So things did eventually fall apart, and I had to grind the 30-40ish miles. That’s not unusual in a 100, but from my experience, the difference here is that accumulated fatigue from previous race made the decline much more drastic. Just like the weather, I turned from a happy-smiling-runner to a brain-hungry-walking-zombie within minutes. I was so far gone that by mile 89ish, I had the surreal experience of meeting one of my running hero - Scott Jurek - who was volunteering with his family at an aid station. All I could managed to say was ‘wow, is that really Scott Jurek?’ with a dumb look on my face. So many things I wished I had said, like thanking him for being such a pioneer, but nope - I was silently dumbly staring while slowly eating my potatoes.
Eventually, I got to meet Nora a few yards from the finish line. And together we crossed it - wrapping a crazy summer of adventure. Now, it’s the drive back to California and reality!
Thanks to all the volunteers who also braved the weather to help us stay on our feet!

Awesome race, way to remain positive throughout. That cold rain in the middle of the night would have broke me, I know it!

It was grim. And seeing everyone feeling so miserable in that tiny aid station really felt bad too... Feeling sorry for yourself was kind of contagious there

Simon!! Thank you for all of your videos. I’ve learned so much and you keep it light but real which is the way I think it should be. This video helped me get through Run Rabbit Run this year for my first 100! Hopefully I’ll see you on the start line soon. Keep it up!

You, sir, are a total beast!! Congratulations on two 100 milers in a week!! That's insanely impressive. And seeing Scott Jurek at an aid station must have seemed like a hallucination! 😆 Great video, I hope you enjoy a few months of recovery time!! A video on how you recover from such insanity would be cool too!
