His love for Merlin can create the abstract concept of a semi-sun and that allowed him to transform in the night. It's nowhere near super powerful since it's not the actual sun itself.

This isn't a spoiler because the anime doesn't adapt side chapters but when Escanor was first introduced he killed the Vampire King with just the heat of his body. There's a reason when Jericho is the sun out it's so hot. Or when he left before it's noon, as the Sun rises he gets more power and more heat. As stated in this episode his body gets so hot it destroys everything around him and his sacred treasure absorbs all that heat. So if it were close to high noon many opponents who are under the 10 Commandments (which is a vast majority of this universe) can't even stand near Escanor during the day, if he doesn't have his axe to absorb the heat.

That’s character depth he’s so fixated on what happened to his parents that it changed him and made him into the person he was a strong quiet dude who only cares about strength because without it in his words you’re pretty much worthless. You need strength to survive and only the strong will achieve victory is that not character? He’s pretty interesting to lots of people. That’s more character than I’ve seen from any of the dbz villains. Just like zamasu had lots of depth and was very interesting
So... a thing that the anime ends up not covering... ever... the power levels of the Ten Commandments. I'm pretty sure that we knew them at this point in the manga, even though they were revealed in a databook, if I'm not mistaken. If you don't mind, I can tell you what each Commandment's power level is, so the next time someone compares someone to any of the Commandments, you'll have a good idea of what power they're talking about. But I can't be sure, because you might prefer not to know. Again, if you would like to know, do tell.

Nice! The sudden buff of escanor isn't because of his magic its because he believe or believe on the sun or something, its a psychological error or something. In short escanor doesn't really need a real sun to become powerful he just need to believe... And for the axe, all sacred treasure has a unique power the axe can store magic and fire the magic he store in it.
Escanor didn’t kill 4 commandments. He hasn’t killed any, just weakened them. He didn’t even kill Galand, as galand ran away and his own commandment turned him into stone
